Title: Where to put mining rigs? Wife wants them out of the house!
Post by: amazingrando on July 25, 2011, 09:04:00 PM
I've got three rigs right now and plan to have about six in the near future.  The wife hates the heat and noise, so I have to find another place for them.

I live in an apartment in Los Angeles, so can't exactly stick them in a shed out back.

I've looked at commercial spaces via craigslist:
* Office space is too expensive
* Warehouse space is too big (min of 600 sq ft +)
* Containers would be great, but they are like ovens in the summer
* Data centers are great (A/C, power, network), but very expensive

Any suggestions?  ???

Put a ad on Craigslist LA looking for a college student who lives in a dorm with free electricity.  I am sure they would appreciate the extra beer money.  ;)

Friends/Neighbors with basements? tell them that you will pay whatever it costs in electricity plus a few bucks more. I have my power wrapped into my condo fees with 30+ units so no one knows that i'm running my friends miner. i get 50 bucks a month from him for "Rent" and "Power costs" (it would cost him 100 if he mined at home).

Good ideas, thanks!

I have no problem paying for the electricity.  At 1kw per rig x 6 rigs, the monthly bill will probably be ~$600.  I don't want to make others pay for that much juice.

A commercial space would be better as it would save about 25%, or $150 a month.

Other ideas?

What about something like http://www.ustoreit.com/storage/climate-controlled-storage/ temperature controlled storage. Just ask if there is power in the room and how much. Who knows they might even have another option being in the physical space biz.

Thought about that.  I'll have to give one of the places a call.

Thanks!

I'm kind of in the same boat and am not having much luck.  Co-locate or datacenter space costs way too much because they're usually all about bandwidth and backup.  I know there have been several pot growing busts around here lately for "grow houses" - someone finds and rents a cheap house and grows their pot in it but you'd really need to get up in the 20+ mining rig range to afford that.

I'm was thinking maybe I'd rent a house, use one room or the basement for mining and sublet the rest to college students or whatever.  Maybe a CS major to use as a 3-fingered admin.  Still, between work, running the rigs and being a parent I don't have the time to juggle it all.  So, I've decided to part out my rigs.

Good luck and I hope you find a solution.

@hmblm1245

If the place I find (if I find one) has Internet access of some kind, I'll just use that.  Worst case scenario is getting a 3G or 4G wifi modem.  They have them for about $50/month.

@alans

Interesting idea on renting a house and then subletting.  Could be more trouble than it's worth as you say.  Sorry to hear that you're getting out of the BTC racket.  I agree that it is a hassle to find a space and administer the systems.  I'm enjoying it though, and have enough free time to keep tinkering with it.

So I started a discussion over on projects about possible solutions for this sort of problem...

Ship them to Tallahassee. I'll put them to work with space to spare. 8^)

I bet you're paying more like $0.12/KWh in Florida, huh?

If you're serious, I just might consider it  ;)

Last bill I paid exactly $0.1290 per Kwh

It was thrown out as a joke because I never dreamed you would consider it due to distance.

If you can think of a win/win scenario I'm *all* ears.

Maybe there is some sort of cabinetry with cooling and sound deadening that can be built around them that also serves another function. Maybe a credenza or fake bookshelf?

Thanks for the offer!

Let me give it some thought.  I'm going to meet with a guy who owns a storage place in LA that might be willing to do something for me.  I'll keep you posted

In the link below if you scroll down to the post by rearwheels, he mentions that he is taking his rig to an "industrial area" where he is renting power. Most likely he is just renting from a friend, but it might be worth sending him a message to find out.

Thanks Dargo.

Meanwhile, the owner of a climate controlled storage place says he can give me a storage unit with power, so I'll be checking that out in the next day or two

No prob, let me know how that works out - I'm in LA too, and might be interested in something like this at some point (right now I don't have enough hashing power to justify it). BTW, I also know that storage places which offer storage for RVs, boats, and such typically have electrical outlets. I found one place (in Florida unfortunately) that has 30 amp plugs in the storage units. I'm sure these are expensive to rent though.

To the OP: send them to me! I have an extra room, I call it my "server room" that currently contains my one-and-a-half rigs :) Aaand I have free electricity! Well not free, but it's included in my rent, I pay a fixed amount no matter how much I use.

The only problem is you're in L.A. and I'm in New Hampshire...

I've asked the owner of this storage place if i could get up to 80 amps to support me growing to about 10 rigs.  We'll see what he's willing to do.  Boat storage is also a good idea.  Might check that if it this doesn't work.

How do you swing fixed price electricity?  That's a sweet deal!

I have three rigs right now and building a fourth.  Expect to have 10 in the next month or two.  That could easily be a $900 power bill in LA, even with commercial rates.

That's not an unusual deal up here in the land of the ice. :) Besides the landlords can deduct it as business expenses so they don't really care one way or another.

I think most places with fixed electricity costs also assume some "standard" usage.  I'm willing to bet if their bill skyrocketed, you'd be billed accordingly

I have reviewed my home owners association bylaws and there is no standard usage, lucky me. Also it may depend on the total amount of apts in the building. Lets say 50+. A bump in power from one might not even dent the power bill for anyone to notice, at least in my case it doesn't. :)

Nope, no mention of standard usage, or of any usage whatsoever anywhere in my lease agreement. :)

I'm surprised nobody mentioned getting rid of the wife as a viable alternative  :-\

I've just setup a small rig (only 2x6950)
I'm from Aus so you may need to translate some of the terms I use ...  :)

But my solution was to put it in my garage in the building basement
I live in a block of units and the power in the garage is of course connected to my unit also.
So my solution is to use a Powerline adapter (I bought a Netgear XAVB1004 for $110)
to get the internet down there

It's in a pretty stable temperature (and also being winter here now quite cool down there)

Testify!  That's why I'm currently selling 8 6990's...

In Long Beach.. wondered if you've got any resolution to this yet?   I have a fairly good size separate addition to the house.  I have a special account with SCE that prices electricity at a fraction of the normal cost.  I also supplement with a solar panel set up.  I currently have two 7970's and two BFL Singles all water cooled.  Interested in teaming up?   Could add water cooling to your rigs and take advantage of the low electricity cost and stay in the local area.

still does not mean that they wouldn't be interested or the person has found a solution yet.
