Title: Have an issue with the forum? Can't post? Avatars disabled? READ THIS!
Post by: whiskers75 on October 23, 2013, 03:01:18 PM
"You must wait 360 seconds between posts"
This is a newbie restriction that will go away after you've made a few posts. Note that 'posting' includes logging in, searching, and other resource-intensive tasks.
Avatars can't be changed?!
Forum was hacked, still recovering.
"Can I change my username?"
Yes PM theymos.

Hope this will stop the endless spam threads :)

Well, at least it will for a day or so if people don't mindlessly create new topics >:(

^^

A day or two ago, someone created a topic that was almost the exact same as the first topic listed in Meta.

Some years ago, on a forum I moderate we decided to get rid of newbie questions by building this grandiose FAQ-Thread, where every newbies eternally recurring question would be answered. We made the thing BIG, bold and red, stickified to the top of every forum and subforum, a link to it in every moderators sig with arrows pointing to it. The only thing missing was blinking and a sound loop eternally screaming to read the FAQ.

We're still getting the same questions each day everyday, dozens of threads asking the same things over and over one on top of the other.

It's impossible to stop this.

I understand when people don't real long FAQ threads. It's the same for everything, people not reading a bunch of terms of services pages, etc.

I do think that at the top of the forum where the sole news is: Change your forum password - should also include temporary things like Registration closed, Avatars can't be changed due to recent security issues, or whatever.

"WTF, forum registration disabled?!?!?!?!?!?"
The forum's registration has been disabled due to the recent hack, until theymos audits some things.
Avatars can't be changed?!
Also due to the hack.

You can add to the list:

"Can I change my username?"
Yes pm theymos.

All accounts must agree to an updated ToS page which blasts your eyes immediately after login with a huge (in font size) FAQ about recent changes. ToS can go below... maybe change a word.

Switch the typical positions of the "yes, I have read the updated ToS and FAQ, and I agree" and "No" buttons (so the "No" option would be on the lower-right of the screen). Replace "No" with "Ban my IP address forever."

I guarantee >50% less "why cant i post" spam.

+1 - and change the CSS classes, HTML ids, and suchlike to make it hard for scripts ;)

Some people tend to overlook stickies, which defeats their purpose. I think that even if they were highlighted in a different color, or they stood out in some way, some people would still not read them.

No, that's because you have a scammer tag. Can't edit profile, or edit/delete your posts.
