Title: Visually differentiate old ranks & merited ranks
Post by: JeremyB on March 20, 2018, 05:47:10 PM
I am for now just a Full Member on this forum but I missed a week to be a Senior Member. Yes just a week after the establishment of the merit system, I would have been Senior.
I will not come back on the interest of the system there are enough threads to discuss it, I would just like to make a remark and a little poll to gather feedback on this idea.

Shouldn’t we visually differentiate ranks? These acquired by the old rules and those acquired by the new merit system? You can vote.

If I take my example, to get the next rank I need 250 merits, that's 150 merits to get, so I’m only third of the way, the road is long, especially for a non-native English speaker.
I hope I will do it but I would be simply Senior Member. At the same level as a Senior Member who maybe has the only "merit" of registering 1 or 2 weeks before me on the forum.

Hence a proposal to differentiate the ranks harder acquired by the merit system.
I don’t know how exactly it could be designed, the icons under the rank could be different for ranks earned with merits for example.
Thanks for your feedbacks.

EDIT: with first feedbacks I realize there is some ambiguity, I don't propose 2 parallel ranking systems, just a differentiation for new ranks acquired by merits, ie:

So, I changed the thread subject to add "Visually".

No.  Merits will speak for themselves, activity and the good 'ol all-important rank will do likewise.  Your idea would introduce yet another layer of complexity and idiocy into a ranking system that's already too complicated and overblown as it is.

Now imagine what OP want is realized. It's not hard to divide Before-Merit Account and After-Merit Account (Sort by Date when Merit System Applied)
But, the worst effect will come, more abuse from Before-Merit Account to Alt-account and yah, USELESS MERIT SYSTEM!
I think today system is Fair Enough.  ::)

All this complaining about merits and ranking makes people look as if they are just here for the spamming, and to take advantage of the forum that many members have spent years building to help people use Bitcoin.

The bottom line is that there is no significant advantage in rank after member level unless you are promoting spam and scam coins through your signature, or you are spamming members with PMs.

Ok thanks for your feedbacks.
I realize there is some ambiguity in my proposal.
I do not propose 2 parallels ranks, just an indicator showing on the profile if the rank comes from good old system or new one:

I don't think that they should be differentiated.
The old accounts have the merit to be here before all this bounty hype (this is why merit system was implemented) and new ones need to prove that they deserve they're rank and that they are here to bring something new and not only for free money.

I edited my post with one clarification.
I don't think Merits speak by themselves, merits earned by good quality posts are not differentiate from ones that you've got from the old ranks system. But I agree with you system is already complicated.

Now imagine what OP want is realized. It's not hard to divide Before-Merit Account and After-Merit Account (Sort by Date when Merit System Applied)

OP updated, I don't propose to change the system at all.

Sorry but there is no complain here.

I can't agree more on the system. I recognize the merit to be here before, just wondering if it could be useful to visually differentiate ranks earned differently.

No need.
A user can have 505 merit points with only 5 smerit recieved, another guy 505 merit points with 255 smerit recieved.
Anyone can obviously guess who is better. So imo no need to give for example a pink coin for each rank passed after the merit implementation.
It is already enough complicated for newbies.

Thanks for your feedback, what I point out is that is not so obvious, you have to open the user profile and check from where merits come from.
