Title: Can you scan a private key QR into your wallet?
Post by: tkbx on October 24, 2013, 11:29:08 PM
Title pretty much says it all. Is there a way to scan a QR code containing a private key, and add that address do your wallet?

On Windows PC use this free app to make a QR code of the key on your PC screen.

In Mycelium Wallet go to key management->Click on plus button then scan button and scan QR code

are you talking about a printed QR on a paper or just a virtual QR code?

It's same thing.

Lets say you used vanitygen or vanity pool and have key/address on a pc.

You are paranoid security aware and do not want this key to be in an email or passed on to a website to make a qr code.

Paste key into app listed above it will make a text QRcode.  QR Droid can read it on android device you can copy and paste into wallet. Or as I said Mycelium Wallet can scan QRcode (or paste from clipboard).

I'd feel better using an open source qr generator, built from source, for any keys containing large balances..

I strongly suggest not doing this.

For example, if you scan a QR code with an external app, the private key is likely logged to the Android system log (because it is being passed into the wallet app as an intent). From there, it can be read by just about any app. Lots of apps already request the "read log" permission - if there is just one black sheep you've had Bitcoins on that key.

If you want to pass Bitcoins around, use a Bitcoin transaction.
