Title: Is there a way to track down stolen bitcoins (localbitcoins) ?
Post by: pupok on March 24, 2018, 05:17:56 AM
hello
i bought a repair part i needed in internet, and the user had alot of good feedbacks so i went ahead and purchased it from him
the thing is he scammed me, he made me send the bitcoin to a localbitcoin wallet, my question is, is there a way to track him down? he live in my city, so maybe getting his address and phone number from localbitcoins could be helpfull, i already contected localbitcoins support but they told me that the police should be the one contacting them, but i went to the police they contected them and they got the same response from them an auto generated email

They will get the same email response from Localbitcoin, because that email can be from anyone. It might even be from some corrupt police officer that wants to take revenge for something. The only way for you to get a genuine response from them, will be for the authorities to subpoena them for that information. <If you can get hold of someone to subpoena for that information>

Good luck, this is going to be a long and difficult procedure. The person might even have used falsified documentation and a fake address.

I think its so hard for you to track it down. The bitcoin is anonymous and the only thing you can do is to email them but as you've said they have an auto generated email. Maybe you can try to call their service if they have or you try to contact one of their staff and talk to her/him about your problem.

So sad for what happened for you sir, its so difficult but I hope you can solve it.

I don't know were you live but this is one example of incompetent police or they are just trying to get rid of you (even worse), as things aren't even supposed to work like that.

If you file a complain based on what you have told us here first they will need to research if your complain is indeed true, and they will first retrace your steps and how you got to know and how you were in contact with this guy and this is another way of finding him.
Second, police won't request information from a party outside their jurisdiction without a mandate from the prosecutor.
Them emailing blindly localbitcoins support is not going to help and it's just not the legal way to do it.

So once you got to the police and filled a complain there is nothing left for you to do.
Wait for their investigation.

But once thing is making me curios about this whole deal.....how do you know he lives in your city?

because this guy who scammed me, has over 400 sells in the website and more than 3 years selling there.. he contacted me from a number (wich is registered in the website aswell).. and a friend of mine looked up the city where he opened the cellphone account.. after 3 years and 400sells he decided to start scamming.. but he most be stupid because i know i have his legit phone number.. but the police here is so corrupt u have to pay them so much money for them to work.. so i have to investigate for my self and then give them the information so it become cheaper

Tracking down a person who scammed you is quite hard because we all know bitcoin is decentralized and storing it or getting it from you is really hard to return it back. Once you've scammed in this crypto currency world it will be a very hard time to recover from it. Especially there's still no legislative order about bitcoin in a certain country, it is not fully legalize so there's no chance to file a case or any legal action to do.

You may track the bitcoin address the hacker, track their exchange address.
And you may can request the details about the account in that exchange.

Localbitcoins right, you should contact local police for that. But, localbitcoins should help you for this one and give your his/her information atleast his/her name.

It should be possible to send bitcoin because of the bitcoin that has a decentralized system, which can be seen all the transactions it does.

Localbitcoin is unlikely to do so as this action can damage the reputation of Localbitcoin itself. Especially in terms of maintaining privacy and confidentiality. And of course, this problem is contrary to the commitment and procedures of crypto legislation that have been made before.

It’s very tough to solve. As per the situation, emailing won’t work I think. Your only hope is police, I fear. Wish you good Luck.

Can only find the account that was transferred to, but the account holder's information cannot be traced without knowing his information
