Title: My MEW Got Hacked
Post by: Sri1267 on March 25, 2018, 05:52:08 PM
Hi,

Today I checked my wallet and I noticed someone transferred 84(50$) CS tokens from account to 0xd8490b0a7db82be84d99ff6e047ed07769b7a6eb address. I know it is impossible to get those tokens and it is not a lot but I want to know how my account got hacked. Is there any way we could track how the person got my wallet key? Any help would be appreciated.

here is the transaction https://ethplorer.io/tx/0x3fbc60b142e314da6512881cd5141c8768e6ece19fd1756c47deb37827a7a7ec#pageSize=100

Thanks!

Edit: I have Zero ether in my account so I cannot transfer remaining tokens to another account. In order to transfer I need to buy ETH. Is it a good idea to buy ETH and transfer to old account then transfer remaining tokens to a new address?

My current ETH address

How long have you tokens there? If relatively long, what were your last susceptive activities in the Internet with MEW opened? I hope, we can not consider airdrops and forks demanding private key, yep?

I have tokens for one week. I will always have a lot of tabs opened in my chrome so I don't remember the susceptive activities while opening the MEW wallet. I think I installed a couple of chrome plugins recently. Do you think one of the plugin tracking MEW info? I also noticed the person transfer 0.018 ether to this address https://etherscan.io/address/0xf565adb21e7ea1c7fd3de8f4f29421e96c0659f2 and then transferred to binance wallet.

You surely got phished, that is why i strongly recommended to install metamask extension whenever you are using a web browser because theres a lto of phishing sites out there it could copy almost all the websites that will require your private keys, decentralized exchanges like what happened to etherdelta, that i why metamask extension is a must to have to protect your private keys.

This is very sad!
P.S. Someone can describe the approximate measures of affordability from scammers. I myself use MYW + METAMASK, but still, I always worry about my wallet!

I highly doubt that MEW was hacked. I believe that your key may be compromised. Protect your private key, this is the first and most important rule of all.

Don't use metamask, and do not use MEW if you do not have a hardware wallet or a safe encrypted wallet.

I do not understand why there are a lot of people still doing the same, is like if you like to get hacked.

Sorry, but there is no going back in here, just buy a hardware wallet.

Yeah. I agree. I am using this wallet mostly for airdrops for small amounts so I did not buy a hard wallet.

well the logic reason about it just , probaly u get keylogger when you surfing on internet.
or phising with fake mew.
a most of people still not aware about how to secure a simple wallet like that.

Yeah, i believe in that too some of as used keylogger for easily connected to the main account of our wallets and this is wrong procedure. This can be prevent if your computer will turn off everytime you don't used so that the connection of IP will not be detect by hackers were mostly the beginning of this 24/7 accounts log on.

i m giving those hacker last chance or they will go early to grave. i will use the transaction ID to work against that person if you know you recently hack any wallet just return the tokens or coins that you stolen from them including mine.

Friend, I sympathize with you. There are a lot of ways to lose data. From viruses, to the substitution of the site. Make sure that private key is out of the reach of anyone else.

I advise using MetaMask for your browser. He will keep all your tokens and ether safe.

Mayb u stored ur private key online and it was hacked.
I advise you take your private key offline and write it on a paper and keep it safely.
I advise you move out all your funds from the comprised etherwallet
I don't want to believe you were phished.
But always try to check and ensure that the link is https://myetherwallet.com before you input ur private key.

Then its time for you to clean up your PC especially the one you are using in accessing your wallet. Maybe you have open a site in which you were phished. There are alot of clone sites today and you should be careful in opening them.

Didnt use metamask and hardwallet wallet? that is why you got hacked these two imporant things will give you more secured wallet and you should be using both together, metamask will be your protection from these phishing sites because it will block you from entering potential scam websites or fake ones. You probably got phished,or else your computer is infect with malware,i suggest install malwarebytes.

I am surprised at this. How could that be possible. I feel if someone had hacked your account, the person would not have transfered just the CS, he would have also transfered other tokens along. I feel something else that is not yet clear happened.
Peradventure it was actually the work of an hacker, then i would advise you transfer all that you have bout of that wallet, to another safe wallet and do not use that wallet again.

No,you wont get hacked if you have good security with your computer install metamask extension which blocks phishing sites in your browser, install antivirus and anti malware softwares, use hardwallets like trezor or ledger so that you wont have any issues, because these are the things wou will need if you have big amounts of assets in your wallet.

It happen to me as well. I dont really know exactly how it happen. Maybe you accidentally give your private key or whatever access you use on MEW. If this only happen on your 1 MEW account then that might be the also reason I can thinkn of. No one is safe to be honest.

in my opinion, use 2 different files to save your address and key
1 file for address
1 file for key
and don't save both files at same folder in computer or laptop
now u
make a new wallet the previous loss is not recoverable

Tell us what was your activities with your mew so we can at least guess what got your mew compromised. There are lots of ways your private keys could have been compromised like you signing in an airdrop and accidentally giving private keys instead of address or your computer was hacked. Did you log in using links from phising emails?

There is nothing you can do with the address now that it is compromised. It is better to move all your funds to a new wallet and do a better security on the new one.

I'm beginning to think the option of purchasing insured hardware wallets should be mandatory as part of any future regulations.  If we want broader adoption by the masses, the risk of loss or theft of funds must be reduced.

You got phished probably you dont have hardwallet or atleast metamask extension in your browser beause if you did have these two you wont get hacked by these phishing sites, are you sure your private keys are safe? you should have installed anti virus and anti malware softwares so that you computer will be well protected from these viruses and malwares.

Title: Re: My MEW Got Hacked
Post by: cryptodagger on March 25, 2018, 10:03:56 PM
You wont get hacked if you did installed these basic things, anti virus + malwarebytes ,hardwallet which will give you an extra protection if your computer or unit has been compromised already because of its security future the hackers wont have any chance of getting your private keys, metamask extension that will encrypt your private keys when you are using decentralized exchanges.

Title: Re: My MEW Got Hacked
Post by: mautenisis on March 25, 2018, 10:08:59 PM
Your private keys were compromised,or your computer has some malwares, that is why it is recommended to have an extra protection using hardware wallets, and you should have installed metamask extension because these extension will block or prompt you from entering a potential phishing site you will be saved from these malicious website if you have installed it.

Title: Re: My MEW Got Hacked
Post by: Meraki on March 25, 2018, 10:14:10 PM
Maybe your computer has virus others can compromised with it, other than that maybe you'll wrongly input your private key in some fill outs like airdrop or etc etc, the problem lies within your irresposibility to protect your privatekey and/or .dat file because those only can access your mew.

Did you participate in the pundi - x token swap?

I saw #2 in the instructions mentioned something about protecting your private keys since the wallet would be receiving the swapped tokens directly.

Nope you arent, but your private keys are compromised, that is why your funds were stolen and transfered to another mew you probably got phised by these phishing sites and you could have save from these sites if you have installed metamask extension.Use hardwallet because its the most secured wallet existing today and you should be using one to prevent these hacks.

There are some possibilities.

1 you are putting your privatekey in the phishing site.

2 Your extension was having a trouble because it's relied on 3rd party it can be used to attack those were installing the extension.

3 you might put your privatekey when you are joining in the airdrop

4 you getting pished by keylogger.

You arent! because mew wallet wont be compromised if your  private keys are safely keep but in your case it is your fault of not having hardwallet or metamask extension atleast so that these phishing website wont have anychance to getting your keys when you are transacting into decentralized exchanges like etherdelta or fork delta.

You wont get phished when you have installed metamask extension it is recommended by the mew team because it blocks those phishing sites that will attempt to get your private keys,it will prompt you from getting hacked plus you can use your hardwallet with your metamask and mew wallet that is what you need to do in the future.

Title: Re: My MEW Got Hacked

I have always checked the MEW website name before entering the key. I stored the key google keep always copy the key & paste it into MEW. The thing I don't understand is how did they get the key from google keep. It is my fault to not to have metamask & hardware wallet. I thought I would get small airdrop amounts so nobody would care about those tokens since those do not have much value.

Nope, your private keys are compromised its either you are a victim of phishing sites which you can be prevented when you have used metamask extension that blocks malicious website and potential phishing sites,or your computer has been infected by some malware or viruses which is why your keys are stolen and used to transfer your coins to their's.

Check the url when you are using myetherwallet.com,use metamask extension if you arent good at checking the url bar so that if you are entering phishing sites you woll get prompted by the metamask extension, its great for blocking these sites and projecting or encrypting private keys when you are using decentralized exchanges, use hardwallets and you will be fine.

Thanks!

MEW is a wallet that once your eth/tokens were transferred, you can only trace the transaction hash. When it was transferred and to what address, though you can report it to MEW by adding its address to watch list but you cannot track how the person got your key, either brute force, phising and etc.

Hey! Feel free to try out Trust Wallet. iOS version is open source on GitHub: https://github.com/TrustWallet. Security and Privacy is our priority, that's why our product is open source and we never ask for any personal information.
We started out as Ethereum Wallet and added support for ALL ERC20 compatible tokens, that's autodetected once you entered the app. Now our focused been on dApp Browser, so you can access Web3 apps that were only possible via Meta Mask until recently.

P.S. I'm Viktor, Trust Wallet Team. Feel free to tweet at me: @vikmeup

Yes, we just can report it to MEW by adding its address to the watchlist. But some keyloggers are used to easily connect to the main account of the wallet,
And this can also be prevented if if the computer / laptop / the like will die every time you are not used so that your IP connection will not be detected by the hacker.

I thiink you cant trace who is the owner of the address. And i think you've been visit a phising site.  They getting your private information. So much better to check it always,  bookmarked all your trusted sites. And always be aware about intruders.

Protect your private key for security is very important we must be more careful opening the web do not enter the key to the web that is sent by mail. making this an experience and learning from this experience will be better for the future

Thanks!

MEW is a wallet that once your eth/tokens were transferred, you can only trace the transaction hash. When it was transferred and to what address, though you can report it to MEW by adding its address to watch list but you cannot track how the person got your key, either brute force, phising and etc.

How do I report to MEW?

100% of your personal lock has been stolen. MEW can not be attacked.

I think your computer is having problems. The plugins can monitor your computer activity or the software installed in the computer. You can remove unnecessary software and plugins from unknown sources and put some of your anti-virus software.

Never log in wallet at a strange computer, when feeling insecure, switch to another wallet to use!

Online wallet is vulnerable to phish or hack as long as there is connection. Much better next time don't always open your wallet just seldom to open it. The more you open the more vulnerable.! Be much careful next time.

it is imposible to hack MEW, but the hacker hack is not a web mew, but your account. There are many ways that hackers do, I know, fake logers and spam. did you ever get the url via email? then you click, then you fill the MEW Secret Key?

there are so many ways your account may be hacked but before I mention these ways, I will advise you not to send or receive any crypto to the wallet again because the person is having access and probably have your private key. back to the ways, your account can be hacked. 1. through phishing site. you probably click on phishing site and you enter your MEW detail through that. 2. store information about your wallet on online storage wallet or email. 3. somebody has direct access to your device that has your wallet detail on it. this might be your computer, phone  etc

Clean your PC and transfer everything from your old MEW wallet to new wallet, you are most probably a victim of a phishing site. Always bookmark important websites and if possible one browser (FireFox) for transactions only and other (Chrome) for web surfing.

Recently I have heard a lot of reports about MEW getting hacked. Unless you have added security features, MEW is quite vulnerable to hacking. Most of the users store their Keystore file or private key carelessly, and this results in the vast majority of the hacks. It will be better if you move remaining tokens and ETH to another wallet.

Considering his experience, it could be the work of a keylogger. Keyloggers are not limited to computers but phones as well. Fornow transfer the rest of your tokens which are not locked to a new wallet to prevent further loss.
I think aside what has already been said, my best bet is to login to your wallet in a sandbox. That's what I've not seen anyone suggesting but it is very difficult if not impossible for your wallet to be hacked if you bookmark MEW site in a sandbox. Hope my advise will help you

I think you have log on from the phishing website and immediately transfer your other tokens to new MEW wallet. Just book mark your Correct Myetherwallet address with your web browser and always log on from that link only. If you can use the hardware wallet in future and it is the most secure way to store tokens. Hop this will help for you.

In my opinion, there are several possibilities that your wallet been hacked. One of them is you probably entering a phishing site.
I recommend you to install Metacert plugin in your browser to detect phishing site. Then, always install Metamask to log in on MEW. Don't log in with your private key to MEW. It's very risky.

There is no way to get your money back. You are very lucky that there was so little money in your account. You need to buy a hardware wallet, such as Trezor, and use it with MEW. This is the safest way that I know.

That's why you should always store your coins/tokens in a hardware wallet: Trezor / Nano Ledger S... It's the safest type of storage available for cryptocurrencies.

As for your MEW being hacked, surely you must have done something wrong in order to have made it vulnerable. I've had MEW for months and never had issues with tokens/coins getting stolen from my wallet.

i am getting worried more and more because there are a lot of people being hacked the wallet  :( :(

Don't use metamask, and do not use MEW if you do not have a hardware wallet or a safe encrypted wallet.

I do not understand why there are a lot of people still doing the same, is like if you like to get hacked.

Sorry, but there is no going back in here, just buy a hardware wallet.

well the logic reason about it just , probaly u get keylogger when you surfing on internet.
or phising with fake mew.
a most of people still not aware about how to secure a simple wallet like that.

Yeah, i believe in that too some of as used keylogger for easily connected to the main account of our wallets and this is wrong procedure. This can be prevent if your computer will turn off everytime you don't used so that the connection of IP will not be detect by hackers were mostly the beginning of this 24/7 accounts log on.

or , u can try another option , like use MEW extension on chrome.
for safety u need save private key to your private notepad,or wherever u want.
that better i think , u dont need to worry about u surfing to the right MEW sites or not.

You must learn good lesson this time because Cryptocurrency wallet private key must be protected away from remote attackers all the time.

But now, it's not too late not to start over again on crypto and after you get Altcoins again be sure you're very careful on accessing your wallet so that you will not lose again your crypto assets.
You can use hardware wallet if you can because it is more secure and safer than mew private key access as we always do.

You might be leading to a phising site. I think you bymistake enter your keys on phising site. Recently one of my friend MEW Ac got hacked and hacker withdrawl all his valuable coins from his wallet. There is no way to track how someone got your wallet key. If you want to transfer your remaining tokens from your hacked Ac. I would say it would be risky to transfer eth to hacked wallet If you would be lucky then you will be able to transfer your rest of the coins otherwise hacker might be access your Ac again the moment you transfer your ether.

That's the very least you can do for now. It's better to transfer all the remaining crypto assets you have in your wallet before it's too late. You can buy Eth  in crypto exchanges and transfer them to your MEW so you can have a gas to transfer all your cryptos in a safer wallet.

I'm sorry to hear that. The best thing you should do, is buy a hardware wallet, Nano S for example.

Follow these steps:

Incase it was malware on your computer run malwarebytes
Install an anti-virus on your computer and perform a full scan.
For any websites you are signed up with and which offer 2-step authentication use it! Google, Facebook, Twitter, some trading exchange platforms do, etc.
Always make sure that the website you're entering is the real one. Many sites look real, but are phishing sites.
Don't click on any emails you receive that you weren't expecting, and never click on any links within that email!
Consider using a VPN - great for when you're using public wi-fi. If you've connected to wi-fi which is actually a scammer, the VPN will have your back as it encrypts your data.

My current ETH address
https://ethplorer.io/address/0xd66e6580605a90020b63c0f922311f5bdc36725c

I think that's an idea you have to do. You have to move all your coins in the new wallet so your coins will not hilanb anymore. Last year I experienced a thing that ama my coins in lost mew and since then I change my wallet and the old coin I move in the new wallet.

How is this possible? Did you use your private key somewhere else and was hacked? This should be the only way

My Sister also got hacked!
If you expect to have a token in your hacked MEW account, check regularly and be ready to fund it with ETH for Gas Fee,
Therefore you will have an advantage of getting your new coins in your hacked MEW against the hacker, as the hacker in my sister always regularly check if there is new token transferred.

You can't be hacked unless you gave your private keys in a phishing page or your computer itself is compromised. No way to get back your coins or to know your robber.

You should have entered the phishing site, and if you are the NEW one from the bookmark, you should not be hacked.

I got hacked too! I didn't even know what is the reason. And I am quite sure that I have not visited any phishing websites.  I've lost a quite amount but it is not too late to start again. Till now, I still see the hacker transferring my tokens to her/his wallet while I am asleep.
this is only means the hacker have your private key. The only solution you can do to not this things happen again is create a new wallet . If your wallet have a balance transfer it all now to the new created wallet.
So creating a new wallet is definitely the best solution for the moment. Hackers are now at every turn, so you need to be very careful and follow all the rules to protect your data from the hands of hackers.

MEW don't store any data about your wallet ,i think you maybe lost you private key or other can open your wallet .think twice carefully about it yourself.

There's a lot of hackers everywhere so we should take good care of our private keys. Maybe you've logged in to a phishing site using your private key. Next time, be alert and always double check if you are logging in to a correct site.

This thing already happened to one of my friend before and after doing some research and asking questions to other people who have been in crypto for too long here are possible reasons for getting hacked. You opened a fake or a phishing site. You might have also opened some malware while doing or clicking some sites, a key logger must've been installed into your computer. And here is one scary thing that I have heard from one of my friend, it is possible that there's a back door on the contract of the token since you have said that you have no ethereum to transfer the tokens.

I think this guy, cherrymonsoon (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=profile;u=1247825), related to this case. Your CS token was sent to 0xD8490B0a7dB82bE84D99fF6E047eD07769b7a6EB and this ETH address has 3 IN transaction from ETH address of cherrymonsoon. But I think this is just an alt account. Maybe you need to investigate a little bit more to find out who hacked your CS token.

Phsing scam is the worst to fall for its always advisable to bookmark your websites and also very important to install metamask so as not to fall victim of phsing websites.
As regards your coins, I think the truth is they are as gone as possible. That's what you get in a decentralized atmosphere, its either u are careful or u are sorry.

I think some of the account wallet get hacked. Because of the negligence of the users. Maybe he or she shared their private key to his common friends or he lost his usb or cellphone. It is very important to all of us her in this furom to be responsible by keeping it safe to our private keys in our wallet accounts. In order to prevent from those hackers.

Quite unfortunate for you. But things like this need to happen sometimes for us to learn. From this experience you will learn to be more vigilant than careless. Phishing sites are so rampant now a days that we should be keen in our daily transactions. If in doubt or the site is suspicious, do not click on it! This will give hackers access to our accounts. Learn from our mistakes and be better.

To me, myetherwallet wallet is one of the most frequently hacked. Therefore, security must be approached very strongly. I had a case when he stole coins$2000. It really upset me. Then I decided to buy a hardware wallet LEDGER. Was very pleased with the purchase. I recommend, if you want to protect your money!

Maybe it is time for me to consider buying a hardware wallet as well. I have been always hesitated to do so and generally just use the online version of myetherwallet. Although I do not have much money it in, it is better for me to secure it I think.

MyEtherWallet is a client-side wallet, which means you hold your keys. If someone gets your private key (keystore file, mnemonic, passwords), they have complete access to your funds. There is no stopping transactions, canceling transactions, or resetting passwords. Once a transaction is on the blockchain, it's final.

follow these steps will eliminated possibility of hack or phishing

1.  Bookmark exchange , myetherwallet, blockchain etc (bookmark every exchange wallet)

2.  Save only token address on notepad no private key ( check every coin you have as many time as you like)

3.  check token info with address only without using private key  (Never expose private key to anyone or site)

4.  Use offline transaction to transfer coins (two computers needed )

This is very wise advice and I also recommend you opening multiple wallets as well so this way, less and less chances of losing all your coins. I remember when my Wife first opened her first MEW account and she got phished and lost like over 2k USD worth of tokens and Ethereum and she was devastated as she had worked so hard to collect them. If you can't get a hardware wallet, then open as many MEWS as you can and try to do all of the above that the Author here recommends. I am deeply saddened at the fact that people are working so hard and the thieves are working ever harder.

As i see the account posted on the picture, ONLY suspicious transaction is the CREDITS (CS)! {in your account}

You can see that the Mew of the reciever from your wallet is

which have other transactions including 5++ ETH..

main wallet of the reciever https://etherscan.io/address/0x2b5634c42055806a59e9107ed44d43c426e58258#tokentxns

We face same problem this time one of our member of bitcoin in our relatives has been, they same what happen to your MEW account. She always doing airdrop since the start, I never teach them anything so I doubt in airdrop that send through email. So what we do is we donate her account little by little ETH so we can transfer her token faster before the hacker will get theme all. We discover to late almost all potential token has been transfer but we try all to transfer in the new MEW. When we search the MEW of the hacker it has comment in their. We really don't know how did he/she access the MEW of our family members.

My partner also got hacked in MEW, one of the reasons is that she got careless in one of the registrations in a campaign or airdrop. Or she got to a website that exposed her wallet. Good thing that it was just in her first airdrop and social media campaign earnings that we noticed it and immediately changed her wallet and integrated it to metamask for extra security. That is why we should be very careful in every thing we do specially in our crypto wallets if you think that a transaction, airdrop, bounty or website is fishy double check its credibility so that you will not lose anything.

Your wallet is not safe anymore to used, just change your wallet. Don't use MEW anymore if you are not aware of phishing sites.
Try to use hard wallet like ledger nano or at least use metamask wallet ( a browser extension ) to prevent more phishing hacking attempt in the future.

Firstly i say no need to send ETH into that account because if you send eth it will also transfer by hacker instantly. On the other hand if it hacked? why other tokens not transfered?. It may be for that tokens value is no more. Everything is possible in crypto world and hacking is also normal thing. As for example if you used your MEW private key in any exchanger and if its DNS server hacked your account must will be hacked by hacker that happened in Etherdelta exchanger.

Hacking an account like this doesn't happen again, and I just heard of a case at MEW like this. I don't understand whether you got phishing from a website or other method. But this is a crime that disturbs many people. You better move all tokens to another wallet. It would be better, leave the wallet that has been hacked.

Sorry that your Myetherwallet got hacked, even more sorry that you might have lost your funds there. Please, don't overthink this. Just shake it off, and don't give up on the system yet. Hold strong, and be alert this time around. Guard your login info and be careful with who you share your personal info with, so as to avoid a repeat of this.
