Title: What do you mean by HODL?
Post by: gemajai on March 27, 2018, 01:30:40 PM
Can anyone clarify what this term means? I was wondering if it should really be spelt as "HOLD" or the meaning of "HODL" is really crypto-related. I already tried searching threads that explain this but was unsuccessful. I was very curious since I began reading discussions in bitcointalk and I usually see this term but I just understand it to mean 'hold' which means don't sell yet your coins. Please correct my misunderstanding if any. Thanks for your time.

HODL is same as holding, for some technical purpose its been used within the forum in such a manner. Most of the users have such a confusion in this regard. In my belief it is not selling, it is all about holding for long term or short term expecting an added profit with reference to the growth.

Hodl is basically holding with "love". It is getting used for "this coin will raise so much and its early" or "this coin will recover after dump" situations. I personally love HODL ing people as holding is healthy for markets even if some people jokes them as "bag holders".

Thanks for your inputs. There are really creative ones.  :D At least I have confirmed that my understanding was not really far from what it means.
I think know you should understand the meaning of HOLD and HODL. If you understand the meaning of HOLD you must lock this thread because many spam conversations are continuously runs in the market. So we must avoid the spam users in crypto market

HODL is a typo, misspelling HOLD. When one of the members here in bitcointalk who said he is going to hold on to bitcoin even if the price fell. Since then it has been popular in bitcoin and cryptocurrency world. With the rise of cryptos, a new breed of lingo has also developed.

Look, for example, someone have bought a coin but it's price suddenly felt down very much, therefore he does't want to sell this coin and decides to keep it in his wallet with a hope that once coin will again rise in price. That means to hodl a coin.

Hodl is more attractive and interesting compare to Hold! Making words that make people to be excited and the same time create or send a powerful message across is considered to be creative and effective.

This is the best strategy ever - if you know you right - stay on yours. If you are sure that crypto will change the world and will increase in price dramatically - hold it and do not let anyone make you sell.  :o

HODL is also known as holding, it's just a term (form of register on the bitcointalk forum) mostly used on the forum.
Holding basically means keeping your coins for future, not to dump!  to sell at a good price.

A short term hold can never be a hodl. A true hodl is derived out of belief in a particular crypto with a dash of sentiment. A hodl can however be forced ie: Bag holders, as you can still dump at a loss.

Perhaps this is a typo or an attempt to create a novelty in the jargon of users of cryptocurrencies. I have no doubt in my mind. This is a strategy of holding coins for a long period in order to profit from price increases. This is a favorite strategy of the majority. Therefore, speculators are constantly hunting for these coins.

Exactly it is,HODLING will be more effective when you are holding the right coins ,especially those coins that are best in long term investments. If you are holding shitcoins, regardless of years of holding it wont make any difference so HOLD those coins which are good in long term hold! short term coins doesnt shouldnt be hold for long term.

Hold on dea life which means literally HOLDING your coins if you are trapped into some coin whenever the market has gone into bloodbath, holding your coisn will be much effective if you are holding only those solid coins that is why we are holding those coins which arent going to crash very hard with these bloodbaths, because surely these coins will recover faster than any shitcoin out there.

HODL is different for different people.
For me it is HODL + TP. That is HODL and take profit regularly. Only hodling won't make you rich nor it is a good strategy for profit making. Think honestly, without taking profit at regular intervals what is the real use of HODL? You are only rich virtually not in the real life until you book profits.

HODL is the technical term used in crypto world, which generally means holding the coins, due to high demand for the crypto coins there are more chances for the prices to increase which if you hold them for longer time, it will help the crypto holder to gain huge profits from their holdings. As every year the price of all the cryptos keeps on increasing and every day new users are entering the crypto world which makes the cryptos more demanding causing the cryptos prices to  shoot up.

In chat rooms, on forums, on Twitter, groups of Telegrams and other channels people write with an error: instead of "HOLD" they write "HODL". This error has become very popular in the world of bitcoins and cryptocurrency. Whenever a person says that he "hodling", it means that he thinks the coin will be profitable later, if not today.
So, "HODL" was originally a typo.

HOLD and HODL are referring the same term holding which means holding the crypto until selling it,But whenever there is a price fall in the crypto currency prices you can see the word HODL more because which is term that means you need to hold with love and trust. So from this you need to remember the word hodl while the prices are falling.

while between this between HODL and HOLD actually have the same meaning, where HODL defines as an investor who has some funds or investment in crypctocurrency by keeping or investing their funds with a certain period according to the target they specify.

Now for example you have an ETH ballance in your wallet, then in a certain period it turns out that eth is decreasing and you judge it to be better retained first, well that means you HODL in ETH.

HODL basically means Holding cryptocurrency. HODL was a typo by a bitcoin member. He meant HOLD but typed wrong. But somehow, it became famous.

So basically, “HODL” was originally a typo which has now popularly earned the status of a humorous backronym:

“HODL” – “Hold on for dear life”

Internet is strange but cool.

I totally can relate to you OP. The very first time i encountered this term, i paused and told myself, there is no such term. Is it a legit cryptocurrency term? "Hold on for/to dear life". was the meaning i've gotten in my research. A typo error that had been incorporated here ever since it came out.

Hod or Holding both have same meaning. It can be interpreted in different conditions. In crypto we use to show.

1.When market is undergoing dip period dont sell your investment hold it until market recovers and you get return more than your expectations.
2.When you have invested in such a coin which is currently traded at low price and you know that in upcoming years it will increase massively in price you just hold it for that good period.

In my understanding hold is 6 months or more. Many people do not understand this, buy coins and constantly complain that the price falls... On hold you work for the prospect.

In summary, a trader opens a title in 2013 December. He's mistakenly wrote a letter under the influence of alcohol. Of course, it was quite profitable, in 2013 the Bitcoin price was 500 dollars.

Well HODLING is pronounced sams as holding as far as I know and it has the same meaning as well. This term is mostly used in crypto related investments, I think. It means long term investment and keeping on holding your money rather than panic selling.
I don't think it has any other specific meaning afaik, even I was confused by it in the beggining.

You are correct, it literally does mean to hold. A forum member misspelled hold to hodl while drinking whiskey. And so the term HODL was coined since then. But then, it was given another meaning, HOLD ON TO/FOR DEAR LIFE. This is more intense in my opinion since this would refer to a trader who is holding on to a coin that is going through a drastic or continuous crash. Also meaning, this term does not apply to traders who are holding coins which are gaining market value.

Simply put,
HOLD (Hold on for Long Duration / Distance / Days - haha! Just made this up!) - keep coins or don’t sell yet while price is increasing to gain more profit. Quite greedy in a way.

HODL (Hold on for Dear Life) - during a crash: keep coins or don’t sell yet while price is low so not to incur any loss. Wait for recovery.

HODL is a slang term and Internet meme that is used in the cryptocurrency community when referring to holding the cryptocurrency rather than selling it. Examples of when the term applies: When prices drop 50% from their all time high, you hodl. When articles come out saying cryptocurrency will die out, you hodl. When a country bans icos and close down exchanges, you hodl.

Hodl is a cryptocurrency alternative name for hold because there is a history behind that. I've searched also why does the crypto fanatics used that term though there is a good one. Definitely, it started when somebody was misspelled the title named hodling instead of holding. The "hodl" term was first used in BTT forum during 2013.

It becomes a slang word. Hold word doesn’t exist itself rather it identifies the holding. Simply, there is no rocket science hidden in this world that this man is trying to find. It was simply the hold and people call it hold just for fun or style. And like you have said, this means keep your investment with you and be panic and definitely don’t sell your asset at low cost. Keep holding everyone.

Hodl (often written HODL) is a slang term and Internet meme that is used in the Bitcoin community when referring to holding the cryptocurrency rather than selling it. It originated in a December 2013 post on the Bitcoin Forum message board by an apparently inebriated user who posted with a typo in the subject, "I AM HODLING." In 2017, Quartz listed it as one of the essential slang terms in Bitcoin culture, and described it as a stance, "to stay invested in bitcoin and not to capitulate in the face of plunging prices." TheStreet.com referred to it as the "favorite mantra" of Bitcoin holders.
Since entering the Bitcoin vernacular, HODL has become a backronym for "hold on for dear life".

These details get from wikipedia

HODL It means that the price fluctuations associated with the crypto are so great and the expected return is also so great that you are going to want to ride through the downturns are take advantage of the price increases so hold in a meaning hold your coins and wrote HODL instead and went it quite viral afterwards it usually used in a context of not selling your coins i think so

In actual this word is HOLD not HODL , but in the cryptocurrency field most of the people are doing Thier own experiment and try to show Everything in another logical way of understanding .
Here HODL means hold your assets that you have for bulk amount of profit and also don't go for the panic sell .
HODL word most of the times we can see when whole market of any coin going much down or dump then we say to everyone that don't go for the  panic sell Because this is a time of HODL , if you will hold then market will get better support easily .
So here this is simply a hold and changed by hodl to show more creative word in cryptourrency .

That's seems like error but it is not. It's like a manner to name "hold" - "hodl" that also have his own value that means - "holding your coins before something happens"

It’s a trading lingo which just basically means to hold your coin. If some of you are not aware, there are actually some words or terms used in trading wherein traders have their own understanding; HODL could be referred to as “Hold on for Dear Life” and if abbreviated spelled out as HODL.

The term HODL can be translated to 'Hold on for Dear Life' and is the same as the term HOLDING with a more serious sense to it. In this market, it is the strategy to not do business either by way of trading away or selling away your coins, especially when their values are low or is not gaining. Instead, the better move is to just hold on to them until such time they regain their value back and get the value they lost.

HODL is slang for “Hold On for Dear Life.” It means that the price fluctuations associated with the crypto are so great, but the expected return is also so great that you are going to want to ride through the downturns are take advantage of the price increases.

HODL is same as holding, for some technical purpose its been used within the forum in such a manner. Most of the users have such a confusion in this regard. In my belief it is not selling, it is all about holding for long term or short term expecting an added profit with reference to the growth.

Some idiot had a typo in "Hold" at some point and everyone jumped on the bandwagon LOL

It means to not sell

I explain about HODL.
Its the hard meaning of HOLD. That is you have some coin, you reserve/stock your coins in your personal wallet. Which you do not wants to sell within 6/12 months. That is HODL.
On other hand, you have some stock. After few days that is 1/2 months, you saw the market is up/you need money then you sold. That 1/2 months stock is HOLD.
I think its clear.

The term hold or hodl are same in meaning.I would explain under what circumstances you should HODL your investment.
Market is drastically under dip and you know that if you wanna sell you can not cover even your buying value,so HODL your investment.
When market is very low but you know that your coins have great aptitude to grow in price in future, hold your investment.

Define a strategy. How many times did you sell and buy cryptocurrency in one week? Some people want to be daily traders, but many people have proven that holding for the long term is more fruitful. A strategy I always tell the newest in cryptocurrency is "buy and hold". The longer you plan to hold a cryptocurrency, the more risk you face. Unless there is an unfortunate indicator of what is going on behind a cryptocurrency, then you have to make a decision to cut loss (sell it).

I admit that when I first saw the word "HODL" I was really wondering what it was.  Is it just a typo error or it has a different meaning in crypto?  A thought came that whoever started this word, definitely he/she's from another nationality.  Because we all know that Americans are very fluent in English and do perfect in spelling.  By constant reading in different forum, I realized, it wasn't a mis-spelled.  It has a very important meaning .  It is a very important reminder which we have to consider,  So, I therefore conclude that "HODL" means HOLD for a great SUCCESS.

To be honest, hodl is just a typo of the "hold" term, there is nothing special about it. Hodl means holding, we just adopted its slang term because it is kind a cool. And I disagree to your opinion that holding an altcoin is stupid, it is you who are stupid, HODLING every coins you have right now and selling it in the right time means profits in the next pump.

Holding basically means keeping your coins for future, not to dump!  to sell at a good price.

According to what I know Hodl is a lot of people who say hodl hold that means holding back and that even hold the coins you have when altcoin prices go down because avoid the losses you have because the strategy of holding coins in the long term to benefit from rising prices is the way right

I mean that holding is a condition in which a person does not want to get misbehaved by letting go of what they have. as withholding a coin, holding a coin is very appropriate when the market undergoes a hoarding. because if we sell it the market will go down and bigger losses.

HODL debut took place in 2013 at bitcointalk. Post name GameKyuubi opened the thread "I AM HODLING".
It seems that the author got drunk and wanted to share what he was holding his BTC despite the serious drop that just happened. Since then, this error has become very popular in the world of bitcoins and cryptocurrencies. Whenever a person says that he is walking (hodling), this means that he believes the coin will be beneficial later, if not today. So, " HODL "was originally a typo, which earned the status of humorous backronym:" HODL", Hold on for dear life — "hold on from the last forces."

HOLD is a term of traders and investors which means to HOLD and have patience. It is something that we must all have as we do trading which is to hold patiently as long as the market is bloody or as long as the value of our holdings is low. Hold on dear life as what others say, it is really a term used by hopeful traders to earn better and to have a positive outlook while earning.

He told the traders to hold their investments because the up trend is coming but instead of typing the word HOLD, he mistype it as HODL. So since then, HODL word is often use during bullish period.

hodl is also known as HODLING which means to survive and not sell the coins we have, even when the price is falling, we must patiently play with the long-term game and not easily tempted by the opportunity to earn a lot of money and get rich suddenly especially if you are the type people who continue to see Bitcoin price movements.

HODL = Hold On for Dear Life, that mean bought crypto for very long investment until they get huge profit, lets say people bought crypto in 2012 and still dont sell yet untill now, that called HODL. Usually people who did it is early adopter who bought Bitcoin in cheap price. HODL is for investor who want to make profit  in very long term investment and dont have times to do trading.

It is an internet slang for crypto that means "Hold on dear life" . It means holding the coin for the long term. But the big loophole for that is you can't hold a coin forever. In investing on this kind of market, The profit is made by selling. So if you wont sell you wont make any profits at all. You need to do due diligence in able to know what your target is when you are going to sell.

I think "HOLD" is an important strategy to apply when you invest in the crypto world. You can hold your coins when the market is unfriendly to you, when the market price is down, this strategy is very good and appropriate to apply to this situation. In order for you not to lose much of your money, so you do not feel harmed by crypto you can hold your coins up to the market price back up.

I mean that I bought some altcoins and will hold them in my portfolio for 6-12 months. Nothing can change my decision, even bad or excellent market conditions. After that perion of time I decide what to do the next.

Others understand "HOLD" as not to sell in panic when the market is going down.

You do not have to sell your coins for sale at very cheap prices from the time you buy them. Keep up with the knowledge I know and what I read is holding the coins you have when the price goes down

HODL
Where it all began, or so legend has it, was back in 2013 when a user commented right here on BitcoinTalk, and an innocent typo became an instant meme lingo sensation. What did he spell incorrectly? HOLD. You will often hear people say HODL (Hold On For Dear Life) or HODLing.
The act of HODLing coins (waiting for them to rise and make the holder a Bitcoin millionaire), is often considered a newb, or newbie, trait, however, many cryptocurrency investors HODL.

Don’t sell — HODL dude!

The very first time the term HODL appeared on the Bitcoin talk forum was in 2013 and came from a member named GameKyuubi under the thread “I AM HODLING”. basically, “HODL” was originally a typo which has now popularly earned the status of a humorous backronym:
From the look of the post, he was drunk and wanted to convey the fact that he was holding his BTC despite the serious fall that had just happened.
Since then, this misspelled term became very popular in the Bitcoin and cryptocurrency world. Whenever a person says in a conversation that he/she is hodling or suggests to hodl, it means that they believe their coin will be profitable one day, if not today.
So basically, “HODL” was originally a typo which has now popularly earned the status of a humorous backronym:
“HODL” – “Hold on for dear life”"

A few years back, someone made a legendary post to r/bitcoin. It made the front page of r/all and I think it became the highest rated bitcoin post ever. It's basically a free-wheeling rant about why he's shamelessly decided to hold his bitcoin. This was at a time when a lot of folks were starting to become traders...but not this guy. He's decided to hodl! (He was drunk as he typed). Even with all the mispellings and obvious inebriation, his words resonated with many people and became kind of an anthem to all those "hodlers" out there.

So I've red about it before and it was said that it was spelled as it is because a member of a forum misspelled it (HODL instead of HOLD). Since then it was being used by other members. There is no difference in meaning, its just a misspelled qord that was already used as a technical term in the forum and even in the telegram.

One of the big things I focus on is mindset training. Create daily habits and routines to help you focus, processing information, focus, prepare better, deal with anxiousness, improve your physical fitness, and other aspects to put you in a peak state. Markets are volatile. Information can be instantaneous.  Data moves quickly into and out of markets that require fast and accurate judgement.  You can’t control that side of the trading equation, but you can control the “you” that you bring to trading.  A combination of high performance daily habits heightens your probability of consistency in yourself. Focus on what you can control in trading, and that is you.

If you can become consistent in your trading process in terms of executing your edge and your money management, and you have a positive trade expectancy sizing properly is essential for growing your trades.  Some traders trade too big too quickly, which causes inconsistency and usually a large setback.

It is defined as  a slang term or meme in the internet that is used in the Bitcoin community when referring to holding the cryptocurrency rather than selling it. Most of the people choose holding crypto currencies rather than selling it that's why the HDOL was coined. You are holding you coin for a long period of time for a purpose.

Hodl also means hold.HoldCoin is simply a long-term investment, meaning choosing a coin that you feel is potential, promising "longevity" and keeping it for a long time (from about 2.3.5 months to several years). ) and until the price of coin grows to the right level of your target, you will be profitable. However, not all hold will be profitable, if you do not choose the right coin then the probability of loss is very high

In essence, HODL means HOLD, that is, hold, in the case of an electronic money player when a person holds a coin that is not sold, regardless of how the price goes down. The community does not use the original word but uses a reverse word derived from a member post that has a Game Kyuubi nickname on our bitcointalk-forum, titled "I AM HODLING", which is Posted on December 18, 2013. Bitcoin has experienced the first strong rally in its history, rising from $ 130 to a peak of $ 1130 on Dec. 5, 2013. , BTC started dropping and the strongest drop on December 18, when the price of BTC was just over 500. The electronic currency was very confused, and he The humor of the title (wrong spelling), plus the content of the call to enthusiasm that this guy wrote was quickly responded by other members. Many "HODL" co-stars and even meme supporters. The term "HODL" is also derived from that.

So hold is holding your coin when hodl is extreme holding when you should restrain yourself as strong as you can ;D

I think that you should hold if you want to become a successful trader taking not many risks. to my mind, it is better to hold not trading every day because you can lose not as much

HODL is when you hold a bag no matter what the price is and sell only when you reach some time limit, probably long time like year, 5 years etc. Holding needs huge courage and patience as you might feel like selling when the price is high or even wants to move on to a different coin when the price keeps tanking. But if you are a true HODLer you will not be moved by anything and "Hold On To Dear Life"

HODLing is an extreme sport  8)

In 2013, one guy was sealed when he wrote a message. Since then, this error has become very popular in the world of crypto-currency. Whenever a person says that he is hodling, this means that he believes the coin will be profitable later, if not today.

if I think the hold is holding a coin or anything in the long run when we trade or invest in conditions that are not good, such as the decline in our commodity prices and we also have to wait for the right time to sell at high prices

The very first time the term HODL appeared on the Bitcoin talk forum was in 2013 and came from a member named GameKyuubi under the thread “I AM HODLING”.

Hold and Hodl have the same meaning of holding or not selling coins in a bad market situation. Hodl is used only in terms of crypto trading. the history that I know the word hodl comes from the wrong people say hodl at the time of trading crypto.

I don't really know if HODL it is an abbreviation or just such a slang word. But what I know really it is that HODL has become a credo for many users and many of them have become rich because of crypto holding.

It means none other than hold. However, hodl means going against the predefined rules and being a rebel with the mentality and having a faith in this innovation. Bitcoin and blockchain gained momentum over the years and now it is growing day by day but still, sometimes things go wrong and market shows lowest levels and at this stage, it becomes more important to have faith on the values and Hodling our investments.

For me HODL has the same signification as Hold it means that even if the Price of Your tokens Goes Down You Will not Panic Sell them for à low Price. Instead You Will wait for the tokens Price to go up Before Selling, so basically holding is Waiting for the Price to go up. But i don.t from Where hodl was used for the First Time instead of Hold.

Hodl is like the symbol of an organization, maybe it is not floating so you will not find out.
Or maybe you have mistaken Hodl for hold coin.
If TradeCoin is a short-term investment, then HoldCoin is simply a long-term investment, meaning choosing a coin that you feel is potential, promising "longevity" and keeping it for a while. long (from about 2.3.5 months to several years) and until the price of coin grows to the right level of your target, you will sell profitably. However, not all hold will be profitable, if you do not choose the right coin then the probability of loss is very high.

Simply put, HODL comes from the word "HOLD" with the wrong spelling but it's intentional.
which means not selling coins that we have or still holding coins that we have even when prices fall.

So far, that's my understanding of the term HODL.

The term HOLD refers to people who accumulate cryptocurrency and do not sell it under any circumstances. In the long term, they certainly benefit compared to those who sold their assets in the fall of the market.

If you're a newbie you will get confused and maybe you can search it in google what does it mean.  :) In the world of crypto HODL means to hold or holding.  If you want a big profit you need to invest more time and more patience not only the money but you must HODL it and wait for the time to pump then that's the right time to sell.
