All rights to fix or improve this document are reserved to Canaan Creative. In this guide you will see how to disassemble and separate all miner components and it will help you to understand how to replace a faulty miner component like for example a broken cooling fan or faulty PCB board. You will also learn how to do the fault diagnosis to your miner in a case of a miner malfunction and how to find out which miner component is most likely not working correctly. This guide is made using an AvalonMiner 841 unit, but same principles apply with other compatible models mentioned in this guide as well. Most common tools needed:

Part 3. https://i.imgur.com/YHPC9XT.png How to check the power supply unit health If you want to know if the power supply is passing any voltage to the PMU board, you can measure the +12V rail output voltage to find out. According to the ATX specification, the measured voltage should be from 11.4 to 12.6 VDC. Please also take into account the rated input voltage for your AvalonMiner. The most safe area for the input voltage is 12.0 to 12.5 VDC. Video: How to check your AvalonMiner power supply https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ty3D5vuj_I (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Ty3D5vuj_I) For measuring the voltage you need a multimeter. You can easily measure the voltage by applying one multimeter test lead to the +12V (yellow) and one multimeter test lead to the COM (black). https://i.imgur.com/882P0Fq.png (https://i.imgur.com/882P0Fq.png) 6-pin PCI-E power connector pinout. Click for a higher resolution image. Cooling fan If your miner won’t start operating, one of the first things to check if the cooling fan is working. You can check it by doing both visual inspection and looking at the miner status page. If you find a miner with fan reading at 0 rpm or close to it, then it is quite clear that you need to replace that miner’s cooling fan. Please also see if there are any indicator LED colors or log error codes related to a cooling fan issue. https://i.imgur.com/lLK4KtM.png (https://i.imgur.com/lLK4KtM.png) Fan speed 0 rpm at the miner status page. https://i.imgur.com/XO0SWe3.png (https://i.imgur.com/XO0SWe3.png) Fan speed 0 rpm at the CGMiner API Log page. If the cooling fan failure occurs during the warranty period, you can request a replacement cooling fan from Canaan Creative. If your miner is out of warranty, here is a list of few compatible replacement cooling fan models:
AvalonMiner Controller / Raspberry Pi If you are not able to access the controller unit at all and you have double-checked that your setup is ok, then it is possible that your controller unit is faulty and needs to be replaced with a new one. Please also make sure that the 5 VDC wall wart is in ok condition and that it is able to provide at least 5 VDC 2.5 A power for the controller unit. Here is the list of compatible controller units:
AUC3 Converter If you are able to access the controller unit successfully, but you don’t see any miner devices connected, it is possible that there is a faulty AUC3 converter or a faulty control board (MM board). You can look at the LED colors and log error codes and try to figure out the issue that way. You can try a spare AUC3 converter if you have another one. You can easily troubleshoot if it is the AUC3 which is faulty, if you have six miners or more in your setup, because this means that you have at least two AUC3 converters in your setup. You can swap those two AUC3 converters and try to see if the issue moves to the another group of miners. If it does, you should be able to know which one is the faulty AUC3 converter. Never buy unshielded USB cables for connecting AUCs to the controller. Keep a multimeter around and check if the resistance of shielded USB cable you want to use is lower than 1ohm. If possible, check all connections, power should be around 0.1ohm, data (two pins in the middle) should be lower than or around 0.2ohm. Unfortunately, there is no way to find out if the cable is actually shielded or not unless you want to cut the actual cable and see the inside. A lot of USB cables out there just short the shield to the ground to make it impossible to know if it is actually shielded or not. Almost all cheap USB cables are not shielded properly. There was a user who wasted a week trying to find out the reason behind random disconnects as he used two 3 meter USB cables from Anker to connect two of AUCs to the controller. It is also important to remember check that your USB cable is not for charging only. Control board (MM board) If you are able to access the controller unit successfully, but you don’t see a miner device connected, it is possible that there is a faulty AUC3 converter or a faulty control board (MM board). Another example of possible control board malfunction is that if there is a huge number hash boards down suddenly. One good hint is that you have for example five miners connected to one AUC3 converter, and you are only able to connect four of them, it indicates that there might be issues with one miner control board. You can look at the LED colors and log error codes and try to figure out the issue that way. You can try using a spare control board (MM board) for the miner in question if you have another one. PMU board PMU board stands for Power Management Unit board. If you have one or more hash boards down and without power, it is a good idea to figure out how is the PMU board condition. You can do this by looking at the CGMiner API Log. If you any values zero or values having an odd number, it is possible that you have a faulty PMU board. When you look at the log, please pay attention to Vi and Vo values (voltage in and voltage out). One PMU board has two power terminals, so there is a total number of four values visible in the log. There are four digits presenting the measured input voltage and output voltage. For example value 1199 means 11.99 VDC. https://i.imgur.com/Cz5aAj7.png Both PMU boards are working normally. https://i.imgur.com/jhAsG4J.png The second PMU board is not working at all. In this next image you can see how to identify which PMU board is the first one and which is the second. https://i.imgur.com/x5SZlVH.png PMU board identification. Hash board To find out if you have a hash board issue, you can look at two things in the CGMiner API log.
If there is one board with no works, then it is clearly a faulty one. Your miner might also have issues with constant rebooting because one of the ASIC chips overheats. In this case you can first try to clean the old thermal paste and then apply new thermal paste. If new thermal paste does no good, you need a new hash board. https://i.imgur.com/6ISkCoF.png Number of works shown in the log. This miner is working normally. https://i.imgur.com/eVH966W.png Every single ASIC chip temperature shown in the log. In this next image you can see how to identify which ID number is for which hash board. https://i.imgur.com/lq7qXUY.png Hash board identification. 3) Tear down (top) (#post_contents) You only need one tool for the tear down process and it is a screwdriver. Make sure you have a good quality Phillips head screwdriver and right sized, to avoid damaging the small bolts. Please also be careful not to use too much force which can potentially damage your screwdriver, bolt or the thread. Please pay attention using the right type of a bolt when assembling it all back together. These instructions show you how to separate each miner component, so that you are able to replace a faulty part in question with a new spare part. Video: Avalonminer 741 Disassembly Guide https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W_BO1PimlA (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1W_BO1PimlA) Step 1. Remove the steel tube case. There are four small bolts in both sides of the miner, so a total number of eight bolts. https://i.imgur.com/NT3bY3N.png (https://i.imgur.com/NT3bY3N.png) Removing the steel tube case. Unplug the 4-pin fan extension cable from the control board. https://i.imgur.com/UXKfImC.png (https://i.imgur.com/UXKfImC.png) Unplugging the 4-pin fan extension cable from the control board. Step 4. Remove the control board (MM board). There are two small bolts to be removed, after which you can gently detach the control board which is connected to both two PMU boards (Power Management Unit). https://i.imgur.com/FGr3D2f.png (https://i.imgur.com/FGr3D2f.png) Removing the control board. https://i.imgur.com/gCexesQ.png (https://i.imgur.com/gCexesQ.png) Removing the control board. Step 5. Remove the hexagon pattern steel grill. There are four small bolts holding it against the frame. https://i.imgur.com/2Zv46jI.png (https://i.imgur.com/2Zv46jI.png) Removing the hexagon pattern steel grill. Step 6. Remove both two frame parts. There are six small bolts holding one frame parts against the heat sinks, so a total number of twelve bolts. https://i.imgur.com/bahNQjI.png (https://i.imgur.com/bahNQjI.png) Removing the frame parts. Step 7. Remove both two power management unit boards (PMU board). There are six bolts per PMU board and four of them https://i.imgur.com/kkGb1Sw.png (https://i.imgur.com/kkGb1Sw.png) Removing the PMU board. Step 8. Remove the hash board. There are three small bolts and six big bolts holding one hash board against the heat sinks. https://i.imgur.com/R2sYwLc.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/R2sYwLc.jpg) Two hash boards with one shared large heat sink and two invidual heat sinks. Remove the old thermal paste if needed, if it is hardened or damaged in any different way. You should do this by using pure isopropyl alcohol and a soft cloth or paper. You can also use a cotton swab if needed. https://i.imgur.com/SiTM5mc.png (https://i.imgur.com/SiTM5mc.png) Removing the old thermal paste. After the surfaces are cleaned, you can apply new thermal paste. Do not use your finger or anything else that causes impurities to mix with the thermal paste when applying the new thermal paste. https://i.imgur.com/gJfpidN.png (https://i.imgur.com/gJfpidN.png) Applying new thermal paste. Now we have gone through how to tear down the miner, how to separate all the miner components and how to replace each invidual miner component. Assembling it all back together is essentially doing this same process backwards. 4) Conclusion (top) (#post_contents) These instructions should be able to help you with most of the issues that might occur, even though AvalonMiner failure rate in field is close to 1%, which is a low number compared to the competitors. But please remember that if you need help with an miner issue, you can always also do these two things:

maybe you want to change 2) Tear down 3) Troubleshooting make no sense to tear it down complete if you only have a broken fan ;) Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on March 31, 2018, 11:16:30 PM @yxt
I think it should be quite obvious that you don't have to tear it down completely if you only need to change a fan. :D But your suggestion is good, I will change the order to -> 2. Troubleshooting - 3. Tear down. EDIT: ^ This has now been done and the guide is updated (April 2, 2018). Any other ideas? :) Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: NotFuzzyWarm on April 04, 2018, 03:00:13 AM Might want to add that when the AUC3 is not seen at all under Avalon Devices to be sure the USB-A to micro-USB cable between the RasPi and AUC is a data cable and not a charger/power cable. They are wired differently and many power/charger cables do not support data transfer.
After mentioning that point to someone in a different thread (and yes was the answer) whatcha think happened when I just hooked up one of my new 841's? Yep. http://www.sherv.net/cm/emoticons/hand-gestures/forehead-slap-smiley-emoticon.gif (http://www.sherv.net/) After waiting a good 5 min and still no AUC reported, I found another USB cable I was certain is for data and voila'! AUC3 found and miner now happily hashing away at Kano. Have you found it to improve significantly in thermal performance if you replaced the thermal compound with a high quality brand? Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: bit2255 on April 07, 2018, 07:38:38 PM Sorry, I guess I posted my issues in the incorrect post (your review guide in the hardware section) and it got deleted by the admin - sorry.
But - here is that post (with additional below): ************************************************************************************************************************** I recently received (2) Avalon 841's and cannot get either of them to run. I initially tried them downstream of an already hashing 821 - no luck. If I put the 841 1st, then the 821 - neither worked. I then tried the 841 with their own controller with 841 pre-installed software (for Avalon 821/841) - no luck on either 841 with different power supplies. I changed AUC3's, data cables. Nothing I do works. When I say it does not work or no luck, here is what happens - initially powers up and fan runs at full speed (light light blue/white) for about 20 seconds, the the fans (almost) stops and the light is now green - it never turns blue - never spins back up /hashes. On other item, both the Kano worker page and the Avalon CGminer status the 841 as connected to the pool OK, but not hashing. So I have 2- 841's just waiting to start hashing - Can someone HELP me??? !!! ************************************************************************************************************************ Update - I have tried everything: changing AUC3 data cable, AUC converter, PSU, controllers, internet port connection and even tried all of that on the 2nd 841 (I have just been trying to get one unit to run). When I rewrote the Raspberry Pi3 Firmware onto a newly reformatted card (again), there was one difference - this time the 841 cycles on and off every minute or so. Now it cycles on (with green light) for a minute now (longer than before), the cycles off (still green) and repeats this on/off routine continuously (always green). ??? Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on April 08, 2018, 03:00:47 PM Did you try another Micro USB Cable?
Are you sure youe cable is able to transmit data and it is not for charging only? Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: bit2255 on April 08, 2018, 05:01:01 PM Yes, I did.
Assuming the 821 firmware will also run the 841, I also swapped out a hashing 821 with the new 841(s). Using everything the same, I just removed the data cable from the 821 and plugged it into the 841 - no good - the 841 never got past the green light. I can't believe both of these new 841s are bad.... ????? Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: bit2255 on April 08, 2018, 11:21:07 PM I've tried every possible combination of data cable / AUC converter / PSU (all supplied by 220v) / controllers / internet connections...... - every swap out was done with working items from an already operating A-821. Every swap out resulted in the A-821 restarting successfully. So no faulty hardware/equip there.
I have used several SD cards updated to the latest 841 firmware in several Raspberry Pi 3 Model B. (openwrt-brcm2708-bcm2710-rpi-3-ext4-sdcard.img). The best I get is a constantly cycling A-841. The same results individually on both of my new A-841s. I believe my issue is related to the following (copied from the CGMiner API log) (as if I really know anything): ****************************************** [Firmware Version] => Avalon Firmware - 20180305 luci: 62d814c cgminer: b5b497e cgminer-packages: 960e108 Socket connect failed => Connection refused ****************************************** It has to be something on my end - hopefully someone can help me with this (internet connection / controller firmware?????) Thanks in advance Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on April 09, 2018, 12:07:03 AM Please make sure that you have a working firmware install and that it is the A841 firmware version.

All I did this morning was to change the network to DCHP from static. I guess I missed this because my other Avalons (5-741s and 821) must have been already defaulted to DCHP as I never had to change this before :P I feel like a fool - oh well, at least it's working! >>>> One other quick question - if I run another 841 on a 110v line, will the reduced voltage hurt the machine at all besides reducing the TH/s? Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on April 09, 2018, 11:04:42 AM Running your A841 using the 110V mains voltage will not hurt it,
but you got to be absolutely sure that your power supply unit is able to provide enough power when connected to the 110V mains voltage. I absolutely prefer using 220V or greater mains voltage. Okay here is a start on Rasp pi issues. Why is this my unit came today and the rasp pi is not detected. I am 99% sure rasp pi does not boot. I am sure cable is good. I am sure power brick is good. I am not sure rasp pi is defective I am not sure mini card is defective Below is what the mini card in the rasp pi looks like. So if you have a working avalon sd card does it look like this one? https://i.imgur.com/Td1mirj.png (https://i.imgur.com/Td1mirj.png) Moderator's note: This post was edited by frodocooper to reduce the size of the embedded image. I ordered a kit from amazon. Proper way to be sure is know you have working gear. I will order this make sure it works then put the card I got today in it. If it works I will run the avalon 841 on friday. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0778CZ97B/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 also burned a scared it does not work. So when I get the rasp pi from amazon on friday I will have 2 sdcards I can test in it. Now for me doing a deep thread under hard ware a dead rasp pi is not a big issue. To a miner looking to do 4 chains of 3 miners total of 12 miners and about 12 x 13 = 156th it is costly. Even a days wait costs 94 dollars so if you are going to mine avalon 841's have an extra rasp pi. an extra full kit is 69 dollars at amazon this is a full kit https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0778CZ97B/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 with its own working software for other rasp pi ops. this makes it a perfect diagnostic tool for dead brick bad card bad cable bad rasp pi So I now have 2 sc cards burned with correct firmware and I think 1 dead rasp pi board with a full kit on the way. When kit comes I will boot rasp pi with included software if that works I will try the 2 cards I have now. the one I burned and the other one that was included. Any idea why a 841 miner or two may drop out out from CGMiner after X amount of hours. This has been randomly happening. After it drops it will continuously drop in and out from cgminer with a primary red LED light and 0 for hash, PG and rpm. Logs show ECHU[1 1 1 1] ECMM[197] However a physical power reboot brings the device back up and running with no errors in log once it is up and running. I have tried reducing the string size per AUC to 4, and only running 3 AUCs per controller for a total of 12 units. I thought that worked as the environment has been stable for its longest period of time but one just dropped on me this morning. Sometimes it is not the same miner and it can be from a different string. I have a case open with Canaan but wanted to check here as well. Miner is in the fault mode. Sorry but I can't figure out the exact reason with this information. If so I would suspect cables. But if it is one of the miners in the middle of the chain I would need to think about it. What is the power brick 5 volts 2.5 amps Or 5.1 volts 2.5 amps. I was able to watch one fail first hand, not sure if it is root problem or a symptom but the fan RPM went to 0, it continued hashing ( i am surprised it would still do this), exhaust temps continued to rise, PG start going down (I assume it was pulling power to reduce hash to in turn reduce heat), than the unit fails, after that it will start popping in and out of CGMiner until a physical power reboot. Weird thing is the fan runs fine after the reboot, makes me think maybe there is an issue with the module. I am surprised the unit doesn't instantly stop when the fan goes to 0. Still waiting on resolution from Canaan support. edit - just to add, they say there is less than 1% failure rate with these units, I have been having issues with 3 so I must be extremely unlucky. My other ones have been running great however. Under the listing it shows,"+5.1V 2.5A output" I haven't confirmed it my self Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on May 04, 2018, 07:10:47 AM PG value describes the power supply condition.

Even at idle min should be 10% or around 560rpm.
The fact it reports 100% speed (command) and 0 rpm (feedback) makes my guess as either a flaky fan or the control board has an intermittent fault in the fan speed control area. Make sure both the fan connectors are seated and no wire is loose. If like the 721's there is a connector on the control board with wires running to a 2nd connector in the fan shroud area. Any suggestions on what the issue may be? Differences I have noticed:
1) Voltage input on trouble unit is 11.7-11.9V, regardless of PSU. All other units are at 12V+ 2) Fan speed on trouble unit seems out of spec. It reports running at 5820RPM/82%, while others show 5790RPM/100%. Somehow it's reporting faster RPM with lower fan control value. I suspect fan may be shutting off and then causing it to overheat, but have not been able to catch it during a crash. Last two times it has crashed, there are no LEDs lit on PMU or MM boards. Just looks to be entirely off and removes itself from cgminer, so there's nothing in log either. Cycle PSU and it will run fine until crashing again, which is typically 1-3 days. Only spare fans I have are from Avalon 6 units and rated lower RPM. Suppose I could try swapping between 841 units if Canaan approves. I really don't think it's the fan. Maybe a bad MM or PMU board. Have only had the left PMU board LEDs go red once and the other side continued to hash. Haven't been able to reproduce.

If you have the skills, you can swap the boards from a good unit to help with the troubleshooting. Presuming of course that this is first approved by Canaan. And then when you have figured out which board or other component is faulty, you can request Canaan sending you a new spare part. It was completely off and noticeably warmer than other units. Let it sit for 15 minutes and cycled PSU. This is what I'm seeing with chip temps and voltages a few minutes after cycling and starting to hash. Don't know if it means anything. Looks like a startup sequence:
Code: PVT_T0[-40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 42 42 40 42 41 39] Refreshing 5 seconds later: Code: PVT_T0[62 63 65 66 67 68 68 70 71 70 69 68 68 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 -40 42 42 40 42 41 39] Refreshing again: Code: PVT_T0[69 70 72 73 75 76 75 78 78 78 77 76 76 78 78 75 76 76 77 77 77 75 72 72 70 70] Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on May 15, 2018, 01:37:59 PM There seems to be something wrong with one of your hash boards.

It crashed again overnight. The 0 and -40 values seem to cycle through all of the chips on all boards for about the first 10 minutes of hashing. After it goes through all, values look normal. I haven't checked other machines to see if they do it as well. Not getting anywhere with Canaan support still. Have been sending them logs of when it's crashed and after it's rebooted, and they say it's fine. Machine powers off entirely, gets removed from cgminer, and there's nothing in logs when crashed.

Same unit still crashing. Last night I was monitoring temperatures and fan speed, saw nothing abnormal, and unit suddenly disappeared from cgminer. Checked it and it was entirely off. Going to try swapping fans tonight, but starting to think repeated overheating from fan reporting 0RPM/100% has already done more damage. Previously it would sit in idle status after crashing and now power is cut entirely.

Haggs, since the A7's are past EOL and out of production, when you were at Canaan did they say anything as to how long they will support the 721/741's with replacement hash boards?

So when you open it, you could clearly see which is board 0, 1, 2 and 3. If I remember right, I think that Canaan should have spare parts available for at least two years after the miner release. What does the back of the boards look like? Bare filled thermal vias (bumps) w/paste directly against the large back side heat sinks or is there layer of TIM between board and heatsink?
When repasting the top side of chips and their smaller heat sink, any reason not to do the backside as well? Aside from needing to when doing board swaps of course. One of my 741's has a board down. I haven't pulled it to play around and see if it's just the board or PMU yet. You should be able to test that by swapping the board positions on that one blade, to differentiate. I still have the dead boards from the 841 video I shot I'll clean off the old paste to give a clear picture of what the back of the board looks like. From what I remember they appeared to be flat, but I can't be sure with the paste having already been applied. I haven't checked with Canaan, but when they sent out the replacement boards for the 841, they sent them pre-pasted (back and chips). I think that is how they plan to send out replacement boards. Edit: Image of the flat metal surface the board is "laminated" to. I couldn't get a clear image of the side view showing the mating of the surfaces. https://i.imgur.com/KRmsqIOt.jpg (https://imgur.com/KRmsqIO) Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: NotFuzzyWarm on August 10, 2018, 08:35:35 PM Cool. Sounds/looks like they are using TLam(R) which is an aluminum-backed circuit board material made just for high power apps like this. I figured I'd reach out to Canaan in regards to sourcing parts for the 741. There advice is to email them - rma@canaan.io - This is to ensure you are requesting the right replacement part. Sounds like they have a lot of 741's still kicking around. When I spoke with them they did suggest it may be beneficial to just purchase an entire unit. This made sense as you would essentially have a spare for anything that can fail. Not sure what the pricing is on any spare parts as all miners will be outside of the warranty period. I already have a 841 that should arrive today that will be taking the 741's power allocation so will actually be ahead in THs when I put it online and take the 741 off.
One example of the thermal circuit boards are these from Epic https://www.epectec.com/pcb/aluminum-circuit-boards.html Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: Megaquake on September 07, 2018, 02:31:24 AM I believe this would be the best place to post this, the MOD can delete the thread I started on the main board.
I Have an 841 that just wants to run at 15.8TH/s+ no matter what I set the voltages at even the max temperature setting seems no help. https://i.imgur.com/Tis3Ma9.png Once it goes above the max temperature it will slow down to normal speeds, cools then repeats! I have a software related question... I have added the pool & solo CK server to my 741. But from what I can see only the first one (pool 0) is being used. Pool: 1 URL: stratum+tcp://de.ckpool.org:3333 StratumActive: false Status: Alive Doesn't the controller software have the load balancing mode as option? The main screen also mentions "1 module active" does that mean 1 full device or 1 of the 2 boards of 1 device? Or is this a software module? Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: Steamtyme on September 08, 2018, 06:27:17 PM You will only see 1 pool active at a time, as you can't send work to more than one place at a time. The other 2 are just there in case the first one fails for whatever reason.
Wait you are probably in the basic main status page, if so and you see 1 module, I'm pretty sure that means 1 miner. Click on the advanced button for a better overview of what is going on with you machines. This is step 2 in the OP for this thread. From here you can check the status page, and the API log. These 2 pages will let you know if there are any problems. You can also post screenshots and someone can look them over with you. but the second server's GetWorks counter goes up sometimes but it doesn't seem to receive jobs. Is there a way to get rid of that third server? I can't disable it and I don't know if entering the same server twice is a good idea. At that point Canaan or the distributor you bought it from can send a replacement board.
Have you even tried the trouble shooting procedures outlined on the 1st page? Have you opened a support ticket with the distributor or Canaan? What are your ambient temperatures. One of the errors, the 144 is a combination of the 16, and the 128. The 128 is a warning regarding a "too hot" situation on the control board, but I think it relates to the specific hashboard, not sure. I'm guessing this is a 741? Has it been cleaned out recently? What is your psu for the rasp pi? Have you tried another rasp pi? Hello @Hagss, yes, I've reflash the firmware 3 times... The first time I had issues with my router, then I picked up another image (the most recent) from here https://canaan.io/downloads/people/mikeqin/avalon741/openwrt/nicehash/20170719/ and after configurating everything was ok. Then after this problem, I tried on more time with this image. My PSU for the PI its a 2.4amp, I know that it was supposed to be at least a 2.5amp, but this is a PI 2 B, wich consumes far more less power... do you think it can be from here?? is it possible that if the PI looses power the Miner Restarts? cause its just one second and I hear the Fan coming up and start see it on GUI. Yes, both are... The one to the PI its from a nice brand and the one to the miner its a 1600W Bitmain and I already tested with a 2200W from another miner. On one 741 I have Code: ECHU[0 128 0 0], on the other I have, Code: ECHU[0 512 0 0] But it could not be Temp :-\ cause it happens on both the same thing, and for test I put Code: --avalon7-voltage-level 6 and LIMIT FAN MINIMUM at 4000RPMs, so temp is around 21 and still reboots :-\ Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on November 01, 2018, 05:33:22 AM Have you opened a support ticket at www.canaan.io ?
I have not seen a 741 behaving like this before. I have not seen a 741 behaving like this before. Hello, No, cause I bought them used from cryptouniverse(?)... In this thread, theres another one complaining with the same things... I changed the PI power supply and does the same thing. @Hagss now you're going to think that I'm crazy :D that this problem its from the Lan lol... I've seen people complaining about the same thing, but they dont stop mining so no one cares about it, if we have a lot of them. But with Static IP and with Google DNS it can take about 20 to 30 minutes whitout restarting, with DHCP, it takes only 4 to 6 minutes... I think, when it losees Lan for some reason, it it disconnects from the miners for a second or two, do know if this is possible?... But now I can only test it on the weekend with other Router... Also dont know why it needs IPV4 BroadCast on the network ??? :-\ But I am going to test it.... Well after testing the images on other 2 places it worked... For some how, one of my routers of one of my ISPs does not work with all the canaan PI images except with the nicehash image. But still keeps restarting on Nicehash. On Kano, Slush and other pools, it stays working for 24h without restarting the CgMiner. I think thats because the nicehash server address is redirecting to the server that the nicehash client asks at th moment. So it works 5, 6 or 7 minutes on one client, then stops (the 741 comes down, restarts cgminer) and connects to another nicehash Client. If this happens to somenone, the solution for now (and for me), is mining on a "real" pool :-) it works with nicehash, but its always restarting and we will keep listening the miner boots up after one work :-) but the shares are there and its counting :-) If someone knows how to solve this without compiling the OpenWrt, with a "keep connection alive", or whatever, please tell me :-) Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: Steamtyme on November 05, 2018, 07:40:04 PM Thanks for the update. The only other time I remember someone having an issue like this they didn't come back with an answer. Glad everything is up and running.
My theory was that it had to do with Nicehash switching orders or something. It was just a guess as I've never used NH. I think your theory is right. The M3 and the S9 dont do this, but on the Pools page they only have Server, Worker and Pass. On the OpenWrt beside the pools we have the Fan Speed, Voltage and other settings, so if we apply a change only on the server (NH switching Job) it has to restart the system cause it doesnt know if we change voltage or other settings. just my thoughts :-) Edit: the most strange thing, its the ECHU giving codes on NH after restart, and on other pools gives all Zero :) Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: spooderman on December 23, 2018, 09:27:44 PM Hi all,
I have a set up consisting of 3 avalon miners. A 721 and two 741s. I have not been able to get any mining done whatsoever. The Avalon controller was bought from blokforge and I have been able to connect to it, set up a pool and I have changed the network protocol to DHCP for easier access. Following the guide (and I've read just about every post in here) has not helped. I have several AUC3 converters and two different AUC3 I2C 5PIN Cables. I have tried them in multiple configurations to no avail. The miner powers up fine. The controller loads up fine. I can open up the interface fine. But no workers show up in the settings. "Avalon devices" remains empty. I am not sure where the error is, I have multiple redundancies for everything, including miners, though only one controller. This is a legit avalon controller bought from blokforge flashed for 7 series. Does anyone have any suggestions? Regards, Spooderman Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on December 23, 2018, 09:38:24 PM Please try to reflash the Raspberry Pi and make a setup with one miner first.

I have followed this guide as stated. I have 2 of literally everything and both fail in the same way, so I assume that I am doing something wrong. Any help would be appreciated. (Miners are simply not showing up in the interface. Currently in the debug I have "Socket connect failed => Connection refused") Kind regards edit: as is often the case, things are somehow working now. i flashed the firmware on the MM myself (which carries a hefty warning against doing so - not sure why, very simple to do). if someone else can't get theirs working i wouldn't know what to tell them. Wasted a week trying to find out the reason behind random disconnects as I used two 3meter USB cable from Anker (yeah!!) to connect two of AUCs to the controller. I also selected a specific price to mine for and would highly suggest putting in the difficulty parameter when using more than one avalon on a pi.
Most pools will allow for parameters to be passed in the password field. d: difficulty (ie d=14000) p: price(ie p=0.030) this is a nicehash specific parameter. Strange, all my 741 on different PIs and different networks were restarting after a few minutes, even with the nicehash image (there is one nicehash image for 741), I think that is when Nicehash changes the Job, than after I run cgminer in shell for the first time, and add the extra-nonce, they were ok... Now I'm getting the same with the 841, but the solution I had doesn't work anymore with 841 last image... :( I think that are packages to add to 841 to get the xnsub working, but I dont know how to install it :-\ ... it shouldn't be difficult cause its linux, we could update. thanks for the tips :-) I was already using the d=4096, but not the price :-) Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: PassThePopcorn on April 05, 2019, 08:30:38 PM You're welcome, the price one is price per PH at least from what nicehash is currently using on sha256 and it's based on an average price of all orders they have. I'd read their documentation on it if you wanted better information.
I never tested nicehash on the 841's I can try to if I need to do any tests with them in the future. But with the 851's they seemed to work without the xnsub using the 20180628 Canaan official firmware the only time I ever saw them leave the pool was when the price was under the threshold I set and their hashrates all seemed to be stable and the speeds I was expecting. I think you have a non issue, are you newer to mining? As long as your pool side hashrate matches roughly the same as your seeing in Miner status you are fine. I'm surprised you didn't get a response saying everything is okay, but I can't speak for them. By golly you are right on this one. I didn't realize this debug only showed one of the three miners in the chain. Now ti figure out why the other two are no longer reporting in. Sounds like you are running 3 of these. If you are running them all off 1 AUC3 I would double check the 5 pin cables running from miner 1 to miner 2, do the same from 2 to 3. Once you've confirmed they are secure, try swapping them around if all 3 miners aren't showing up yet. I have found this is usually my issue after I move things around. If all 3 still aren't reporting you should changing the order of the miners in the chain. Hopefully that helps get them back online. Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: wormixx on April 26, 2019, 09:39:39 AM Have anyone dealt with high DH value (device hardware errors)?
Now I have three Avalon 851 with DH=14%, 35% and 50% and reduced hashrate respectively. I could suppose it is a single defect with one miner or hashboard, but it's happened with 3 miners out of 5 one after another during 4 months after purchase. Particularly alarming, that all of the troubled miners worked with "Low power" firmware (2018-12-22) since purchasing, while other miners from the same batch worked with high-performance firmware all the time and they are ok now (firmware 2018-06-28). It's a strange coincidence. All miners worked in the same environment - in a cool room with good ventilation and ambient temperature 18C. Low power mode means more gentle conditions for hardware - lower frequency, lower heating. How could hashboards degrade so fast in low power mode? Sounds like nonsense, but is the "Low Power mode" danger for hashboards on long working period? Or it's just inexplicable coincidence and manufacturing defect? Canaan removed DH parameter from cgminer status page (it was present at the page for Avalon7) and it was a bad idea to remove it for Avalon8, because it is the most important health indicator alongside with power good indicator. Additionally, the status page now shows miner's individual hashrate without considering hardware errors and it is difficult to notice the growth of hardware errors. You are looking at individual miners hashrates and they are ok. But overall daisy-chain hashrate gradually decreases month by month. And then one day a few months later you look and realize that it's become steadily smaller than before. Look at the screenshot. https://i.imgur.com/BKO5kSH.png Miners work with last firmware with Low power mode. Individual miners hashrate is 9093 and 8772, but overall hashrate isn't exceeded 12800 (should be ~17800) after 1 hour of heating. cgminer log shows: DH[14.638%] for miner A851S-0-1 and DH[54.779%] for miner A851S-0-2 But healthy miners have DH not greater 2-3% after 10-15 minutes of heating cgminer log has values Code: ERATIO0[ 16.85% 56.00% 18.64% 75.77% 59.03% 3.47% 10.91% 77.26% 79.47% 21.65% 69.13% 7.62% 42.37% 84.72% 59.43% 43.69% 64.23% 45.52% 80.81% 98.77% 17.58% 73.80% 68.72% 87.45% 11.55% 48.68%] I suppose it is a hardware errors ratio for every chip. Looks terrible. Full cgminer log: Code: [Firmware Version] => Avalon Firmware - 20190404 I tried to switch power mode to HighPerformance, individual miners hashrate grow up to ~15000 but overall hashrate of two miners isn't exceeded 20000 because DH ratio has not changed significantly. I replaced raspberry pi, auc3, wires and did a pi and mm firmware downgrade/upgrade – no results. Power is good, I replaced power supplies, all pmu lights are green and cgminer logdump shows correct voltages on hash boards. I submitted a support ticket to canaan several days ago and haven't heard back from them. I owned a lot of Avalon7 for 2 years and there were no problems with them all the time. Canaan devices were famous for their reliability. Now I'm really upset about Avalon 851. Any idea what else to try? We have bought pack of 40 avalon 821 recently . They were working relatively stable for one week . But after we moved them to another location we are facing very bothering issue. The connection between raspbery and AUC3 keeps disconnecting and reconnecting non stop part of the logs : Code: [ 1.857048] usb 1-1: new high-speed USB device number 2 using dwc_otg The setup is as follow 20 avalon to one raspbery in pack of 5 which are connected to 4 AUCs and then raspbery . one Raspbery -> 4 AUCS -> 20 Avalon 10 avalon to one raspbery in pack of 5 which are connected to 2 AUCs and then raspbery . one Raspbery -> 2 AUCS -> 10 Avalon 10 avalon to one raspbery in pack of 5 which are connected to 2 AUCs and then raspbery . one Raspbery -> 2 AUCS -> 10 Avalon And all of them are experiencing same issue and connect / disconnect frequently every 3-4 for minutes. RPI image version is : Controller Version: Avalon Firmware for avalon8 – 20190404 And MM version is : 8211904-1ab9760 We tried changing USB cables between raspbery and AUC3 but it did not help . Also tried moving AUCs around and it did not help aslo. It seems the problem is not AUCs itself as we have 8 of them and tested all of them between devices. So would you please advice what can be wrong.I was going to change the raspbery firmware but im not sure that it is the problem. If you have the extra AUC3 adapters try going with a max of 4 per string and see how that goes. In the past people have had issues trying to operate 5 miners per AUC3. You may also be using weak power blocks for the Rasp PI's, I can't remember the minimum right now, I'll look again.
From OP. It is really getting on my nerve what is actually wrong and what has happened in moving them around . There is not an easy way to pinpoint the exact issue and the openwrt logs are not helping at all. Is there anywhere in the logs i can find something more ? I can generally figure out an issue with the Miner itself when that's the problem. In regards to what happened after the move hard to say, it could be a slightly different line voltage in your new location making it so the Pi isn't getting enough juice to support 5 miners per AUC3 - this is just a guess.
Have you tried firing it up again as a test with say 3 or 4 miners per AUC3? If not that should be your first step. Do you have something like a Samsung phone charger wall brick?? That's what I was using for my PI's in the past - I've never had to run 5 machines per AUC3 though. I was also thinking about chaining less units and see what happens as you said. The bricks will be here by tomorrow , but im not so sure if it is rasbperi power, as pack of 10s are doing the same thing too. Regards Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: Steamtyme on June 14, 2019, 03:29:07 PM Forgive my ignorance if I get this wrong. Your pack of 10's are still 5 miners/AUC3,
The Pi get's it's power then it branches off to the 4 USB ports to supply each potential chain. The power supplied to each chain would be proportional to what is incoming to the PI, so if that has dropped off due to your line voltage it could be a chain effect. I believe with what you have you should try 1 PI with 12 miners - 3 per AUC to start. If that fires up do another PI with 16 miners - 4 per AUC. If the first test doesn't work try starting at 8 miners with there being 2 miners per AUC. Also just double check that all your cables are seated properly. Just play with it until you get miners hashing consistently. Good luck. I am going to test what you said but i guess somehow this will solve the problem as i had tested something like you said , powering up device by device and at some point it become totally unstable. Im wondering what does canaan officially announced as the raspbery power requirements for up to 20 miners per raspbery. Also powered USB hub is an option ? how would it connect to raspbery ? (Canaan calls for at least 2.5A rating).
If you mean using a hub between the Pi and the AUC's --no one has EVER needed to do that. The issue with running more than 3 miners per AUC is not related to power, it is related to longer communications times needed to talk to all the miners in the chain. That increased time leads to higher number of rejected shares. For full info on all Avalon miners use the CGMiner API log. There is a ton of data there on the AUC's including data speed, voltages, temp, etc. Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: philipma1957 on June 14, 2019, 03:59:33 PM 1) chains of 3 are better then chains of 4 or 5.

Well Well Well, So i guess i found what was so f...king wrong. I was overlooking something very simple (may be simple but not documented any where). Im mining at slush pool main address stratum+tcp://stratum.slushpool.com:3333 and everything seemed fine (nearly). After moving miner to another location and the connect / disconnect story started while the miners where working i could see it is all stale hashes and the pool seems dropping all my hashrates. I overlooked this and never thought this is the issue , i thought because miners are not stable this is happening. Well actually it was vise versa totally. For some reason the stratum+tcp://stratum.slushpool.com:3333 was counting all my hashes as stall . going around searching for what causes these stall hash rate i found that there is kind of logic in the pools software that when they found to many stall hashes from client they try to somehow communicate with client and inform it about this , either this or stale hash buildup on avalons seems to cause them to restart . Changing to stratum+tcp://cn.stratum.slushpool.com:3333 seems to solve the stale hashes. I have got 35 of them stable for about 30 minutes now.A chain of 5 seems to still crash though which im working on . Best regards Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: Steamtyme on June 14, 2019, 08:20:01 PM Well glad you got it sorted, when you get the AUC's you might still want to think about spreading the miners out so you don't have to run chains of 5. I'll just throw this in there as it's a good time to ramp up at Kano (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=789369.0) pool. Lower fees, but it does come with higher variance. Might be worth looking into for yourself if you've never mined there.

What about the thermal paste at the back of the hashing board? Hash boards seem physically and thermally connected to the back plate as well and from the look of it; there is thermal paste involved. Should I disconnect it and change the paste at the back as well? I would clean it with isopropyl alcohol and then re-paste it with a good quality thermal paste. Are you able to test it with another Rasp Pi? Are you able to test it with another AUC3 converter? Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: NotFuzzyWarm on June 17, 2019, 02:36:02 PM @soymoji
Did you also try a different USB cable? Cables that are for charging only are more common than one would think... It needs one that is not just for power but must also support data transfer, sometimes called a 'sync' cable. It's really easy to work on the Avalon machines so I imagine you could DIY. If not you might want to check with a distributor like Blokforge or Cryptouniverse. If they don't pan out you could post in the Marketplace you are looking for a couple, iirc they are side specific. Left or Right and marked.
I'll also look through what I have. I can't remember if I have a good spare or not. I actually can't even test it anymore either, gave away the 841. Either way I'll let you know. one of my 841s (which I bought from you) has issues after an electrician turned off the main differential off and on twice. On the left side I see the lower led being lit. On the right side I see the upper led being lit. It's still mining but at 4.2Th instead of 12Th. Is it still worth trying to repair this (are there even spare parts to find?) or should I get another one or something more recent? Hi, sorry to hear that :( Based on your kernel log, - both PMU boards are ok - hash board #0 is dead - hash board #1 is dead - hash board #2 is alive - hash board #3 is alive You could ask Canaan if they sell spare parts. Not sure if shipping cost will kill it. Also your electricity price etc. is the key whether it makes sense to fix it or buy a new gen. miner. Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: vmtorrealba on January 28, 2021, 02:32:52 PM Greetings friends, a pleasure to meet on this website to share knowledge. I share with you that since a month I have a small farm with 23 miners avalon 841 and 47 ebang e9 +, so step by step I have been learning how they work both at the hardware and software level, code reading, etc.
The forum has been of a spectacular help, it has been the main guide of all my actions to take, however there are things that I still cannot understand and what more if it is not with the help of you and your guidance to solve these doubts in if possible. For example, there are error codes which I do not see in the list so I can not grasp what the system tells me and in which that specific miner would be failing, I refer to the code: Code: Vi[1266 1266 1272 1272] I also mention that my PG column shows me the value "3", when this happens is it an error in the miner or in the power supply of the same? I apologize to you in advance for my transcription errors since my native language is Spanish. Thank you very much for your collaboration friends. Successes. Title: Re: Troubleshooting and repair guide for AvalonMiner models 721, 741, 761, 821 & 841 Post by: HagssFIN on January 28, 2021, 05:29:10 PM @vmtorrealba
The error codes are all listed in the list. You need to make a "reverse sum math" for the error codes. ECHU stands for error codes hashing unit. Third ECHU reading for the third hash board: 2049 = 1 + 2048 1: CODE_IDLE 2048: CODE_PGFAILED Fourth ECHU reading for the fourth hash board: 133121 = 1 + 2048 + 131072 1: CODE_IDLE 2048: CODE_PGFAILED 131072: CODE_HUFAILED So it is saying that your second PMU board is faulty and your fourth hash board is faulty. I would first replace the PMU board and then see if the hash boards connected to it are ok. I would like to know the meaning of the error that I show in the image in the PVT section of the 4 cards, why the value is negative. I emphasize that the input voltages of the PMU were correct, only it was not enough to print the screen. Thank you. Software images from random individual users *may* be infected with malware. How to setup is here https://support.blokforge.com/kb/article/18-how-do-i-connect-an-7-8-9-series-avalonminer-and-avalonminer-controller/ There is no 'other' firmware/software available for the Avalons. The simple reason is because there is zero need for it. Avalons are eminently tweakable using their More Options box on the configuration page. You should start reading at the start of this thread as any questions you might have about setting them up and tweaks are most likely already answered here. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2616205.0 it would appear they have the same settings. On the A851 I only changed the 2 bottom settings of the settings page: Power Mode(Default: HighPerformance, Support: A8) "Low Power" More Options: --avalon8-fan 10-42 I've run this all through summer and now autumn for the last 5 months, and the 42 fan limit still allowed the miner to run without failing or over heating. However, I did turn it off on 3 or 4 occasions over the 3 months of summer, when the room temperature got close to 40C Anyway, the A851 result is around 9TH for around 900W The fan limit of 10-42 means it's relatively quiet compared to any other miner.
