Post by: Garrett Burgwardt on February 07, 2011, 02:53:29 AM
Would anyone be interested in me hosting a minecraft server for us bitcoin forum members?

Could be lots of fun :)

I'm interested as well. I already have a private server for friends, and they can be annoying to maintain.

That'd be up to you all, I suppose. Make suggestions!

Personally I enjoy the classic Minecraft, no mods or free server hand outs. I think it would be great if we had a BitCoin Forums Minecraft server. It's less of a headache to run without mods, so might be easier on you. I have run minecraft servers before and I'd be happy to help in any way I can. Planning on running it on your Desktop or having a dedicated server for it?

I've got a dedicated server, plenty of horsepower ;)

And I'm a fan of classic as well, mods are irritating :P

You know what would be an interesting mod (and way to fund a server)? Have the server require registration, with some database holding user information. Each user is given a Bitcoin address, to which they can send Bitcoin. The server can then use this money to fund operations, and the user gets the equivalent amount of in-game Bitcoin. This can be used as a medium of exchange in the Minecraft world. Essentially, you're donating to run the server, but you also get an in-game currency for use as well. I envision them as physical Bitcoins, and I think it would be kind of cool. :)

If you make the mod, I'll host it :P

There is already a craftbukkit plugin that adds an economy with money, trading, and stores to Minecraft. It would be possible to adapt this to use real money (bitcoins). The question is: would anyone actually pay?

People buy facebook dollars knowing they take 30% off the top......

What would be the point of having in-game money? From my experience it doesn't add anything to the game. However, I would be willing to donate bitcoin to fund the server. As long as it was 100% optional.

Heh, I can offer hosting for your server for probably cheaper than most places, and since I'm not very active on my server I'd be more than happy to endorse yours.

Hi TheKid,

Currently I'm hosting it off of the Comcast Backbone w/ 2 connections, one is a more modern Docsis 3 connection, the second is a Docsis 1.1... in total there is about 7Mb Up and 28Mb down..

I let people connect on the main host name, which is slower, and some players get to know the other faster address...

I'm running it on an i7-950 w/ 12GB w/ Enterprise SSD & RAID 10 hdd's (with hotspare), mysql, ubuntu 10.10, apache, perl, python, and a bunch of other things I have put in there over time related to the minecraft server.

As its a pretty sophisticated setup it would be a little tricky to reconfigure, but still I kinda want to ask what would it cost me, as right now it is piggy backing off of my existing internet services I use.

I would probably consider it down the road if it could perform as well as it does on your host as it is here...  My concern would be having the resources to do it right, as a minecraft server is pretty resource intensive.

I know at some point I may get annoyed at my bandwidth being consumed as it is.  I dont really make any money with it, so cost is a factor of course. But I may keep it in mind as an option for other things, or this.

Send me some details.

Thanks,

Rich

I presently run F3NDOT University Free-Build Minecraft Server (http://minecraft.justinbull.ca/) which is free to use however you get access to convenient commands and recognized status if you donate. We just started accepting Bitcoins for donations.

We require that you're part of a post-secondary institution but if you don't have a .edu email address, email me directly from the forum and I'll add you guys in!

Presently 50-slot.
