Title: Damaged 10 chip Avalon board need help making an interface to test the board
Post by: ashg1990 on November 01, 2013, 12:06:42 PM
okay so I have a damaged project Avalon 10 chip board that I bough damage u can see the original photo underneath http://img34.imageshack.us/img34/3163/ie5.JPGhttp://img24.imageshack.us/img24/5738/k1cq.jpg
as u can see it was damaged I fixed everything I could see by eye but now I come to test it I have to way to power it up and hook it up to my pi is there any way I can build a simple quick test rig for this board

I see you bought one of TAV's hash units —the red PCB is a giveaway :)

The easiest would be to buy a control unit, pdu (see these boards at https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Avalon), and a hash panel (those long PCBs with 8 headers to plug in up to 8 boards). TAV can sell you these boards, contact info@thinairventures.com

I would connect this to a PIC16LF1459 using the open source circuit from BkkCoins  Klondike design.
This wound not be the easiest way but it would be fun especially if you had 2 modules to connect.

Yes. If you prefer the DIY route, this would be a fun project.

Its is the DIY approach I definatly want to do I have experience with circuits so debug and then producing my own controller would definatly be more for any more info would be great I do actually have 3 of these boards :) so a diy setup would be nice I just want a setup to sest one hashunit at a time

Wish I had 2 modules :)
I think this project could be done in 1 or 2 evenings I have most the parts already.
What I would do is build a mini back panel it would accept 2 modules,12 volts and USB.
It would take 12 volts in using a 6 lead PCI-e connector like many other projects use.
The mini back panel would regulate 12 volts to 3 volts for input to the modules or use 3.3 volts form the power supply.
The mini back panel would have a DIP version of the PIC16LF1459 and a small amount of glue logic to connect the report_n & report_p signals to the PIC.
The only other thing would be USB connector to connect a host for running cgminer.
The hardest part for me would be the 3 volts for supplying to the modules.

fas max I would be happy to sell a module for a decent price :) also sounds interesting bit making a mini h-board will be my problem and ill be using my raspberry as a host

I am currently using a RasPi with my Klondike miners and it works quit well.

I would build the mini panels using surplus parts I have laying around so it would not look professional.
With the panel you should be able to power up the modules and get signals running so you can probe them.

Building this would just be for fun unless we could find some modules with GEN2 parts installed. :)

Did you get a heatsink with the modules?

i have no heatsinks but this will not be and issue as ill get one made by my brother who is it the fabrication industry any chance u can make a schemetic to use the 20 pin miner header and attach to my pi and external power source so i know its working once i know it working ill be happy

Is the purpose of this test backplane only for testing single 10 chip Avalon units?
Or would you want to drive some hashing units long term with this mini backplane?

it is just for a test jig that's it all I need to do is power ir and interface it to my pi wich Is running minepeoon

Come on someone out ther mus be able to help me on how to power this moudule up I think I have the schematics wich have the 20 pin header but I don't know what pin to use to connect reasperyy and what pins need powersource all I need is a tempory diy method just to test the board

What is pin to pin spacing on the 20 pin connector and what is the spacing between rows of pins?
Is it .1 inch on both measurements ?
Your not going to be able to connect directly to your RasPI.
