Hi all, I watched youtube video about the different kinds of wallets, and he described a "light wallet" that interact directly with the network (as oppose to a wallet like MEW that interacts with the network through one of their nodes.) The guy in the video said there are options like this for BTC but not yet for ETH... but the video was several months old, so I was wondering if there was a new wallet out that I can use.


For reference, this is my first wallet ever, I just want an easy place to store a few Ether. Advice appreciated.

Again i think there is only one wallet i would use and that is obviously my ether wallet, also try and check out paper wallets and also metamask wallet :)

I would really suggest a hardware wallet for storing your ETH. They aren't free, but the leading hardware wallets (Trezor, KeepKey and Ledger Nano) are excellent choices for maximum security. Since Ethereums price is on the rise lately, hopefully we'll see some new ETH wallets in the future!

You can install the official ETH wallet to store your ETH, most of the cases it's safe enough. However, if you're storing a large quantity of ETH, a cold wallet(Trezor/Ledger Nano/etc) is recommanded cause these hardward wallets minimize the risk of virus infection, hacking, pc crashes and etc.

What I use and feel safe that MEW is best place for keep your eth and for android phone Imtoken wallet is the best wallet for ethereum.... Regarding all these things you should keep your private key safe and secure and write down in your private diary so you will not compromise with your wallet...

in bitcoin and many other altcoins you have Simplified Payment Verification (SPV) wallets where you only keep the block headers instead of the whole blockchain so the size is about 40 MB. but that needs an indexed server (node) that you connect to and that node will require higher resources than a normal bitcoin node.

unfortunately we do not have the same thing for Ethereum. so your only option is to use the full wallets (which are different and i think you can reduce the total size in some way but i don't use any so i can't give a better answer) and store a large file on your computer and also have trouble syncing because of the bloated blockchain, or use third party services like web wallets such as MEW with a much lower security.

My suggestion regarding this i think just research first don't trust early for what you've seen many wallet for this popular erc20 token ethereum wallet is just search Myetherwallet.com then  download apps to playstore imtoken for ethereum light wallet apps .

Your correct, there are alot of wallets on google play store and also the apple store that are scams and google just hasn't phased them out,

Best to use something thats been around since the beginning of ETH.

I've used MEW - but they have a warning about phishing attempts and people losing their private keys.  I got a Ledger and have been very pleased.  I use it with MEW, and it requires you to physically hold it to spend.  As long as it is not lost, a hardware wallet is probably the most safe way to hold and move crypto.  Was reading something by Mike Belshe from BitGo (a crypto security trust company) and one of the tools they use is a ledger for whales.

Again i would just stick to the wallets that been around since the beginning and obviously dont tell anyone what wallet your using

I agree that hardware wallet is the most safe wallet since your private can not be copy even if you login in the phishing website. The private is intact to the hardware wallet itself. I'm using trezor since last year and I never heard lite wallet on ETH.

Metamask is also a good wallet for tokens that are ERC-20
