Title: Is Paypal safe for bitcoin transactions?
Post by: tins on November 03, 2013, 09:27:26 AM

Scenario:
Person A sends paypal payment to Person B for bitcoin. Person A confirms their bitcoin address via email to Person B.
Then, Person B sends bitcoin to Person A.

If Person A were to attempt to reverse payment on Paypal, all Person B would have to do is respond to paypal with screenshot of Person A's email confirming bitcoin address and a screenshot of their wallet 'sent' transaction to said bitcoin address.

That should be plenty of proof that Person B needs to prevent Person A from reversing payment.

Why are people so afraid of Paypal transaction? It should be relatively simple to prevent a scammer that tries to reverse payment.
Am I missing anything?

NO.

There are a lot of thread about this, in short I could say that:
1 - Paypal's policies do not allow bitcoin transactions
2 - Paypal always will support the buyer
3 - You will be scammed in 99% of your paypal/bitcoin operations.

Obviously email is not enought proof

You need to send physical item and have proof of sending it

paypal can be very dangerous and given how you thing it works and is safe it is best for you to avoid using them. but there are deals which happen with paypal which work fine. need to be much more careful though.

Isn't there a stickied topic about Paypal and Bitcoin?

If not there probably should be (as the same questions come up often - as do people offering BTC via Paypal who end up getting screwed no matter how cleverly they think they have "worked it out").

Except you'd be scamming PayPal since they've explicitly made it clear that they do not agree to take this risk.

Yes it can - and by the Paypal TOS you cannot use Bitcoin (or any other internet currency).

Just read the stories of those that tried and failed creating services for Paypal to BTC (exactly why it should be stickied if it isn't already).

Do not use paypal with Bitcoin. Search up the threads which are related to this. You will find all the information you need there.

You mean you should lie to PayPal to get them to do something they wouldn't do if they knew the truth? Really?

Quote
Can be gift charged back?
If you are asking if the payment can be reversed, of course it can. The sender just has to say they didn't authorize the payment and PayPal will reverse it. Gifts are the easiest to reverse -- for what possible dishonest reason would a person want to reverse a gift? There are clear reasons to dishonestly try to reverse a payment, but surely someone who wants to reverse a gift is almost certainly telling the truth when they say it's unauthorized.

I guess I'll stay away from Paypal.

If you're a buyer, I suggest you stick to paypal like glue.  If you are a seller, you're screwed with paypal, I'd suggest using something else, like localbitcoins.
