Title: 150GH of computing power has joined the global pool today?
Post by: humble on February 08, 2011, 05:40:00 AM
When I checked http://bitcoincharts.com about eight hours ago it was showing a global hash rate of around 175. Now the global rate is over 330. Where would that much additional computing power be coming from?

It's down to 266 G/hash now. Not sure what happened. Possibly a bug from the difficulty change?

150 GH is the majority of the network's global computing power.  There goes the neighborhood.

And now it's down to 244. That must be it. Good call.

Wait a sec... now it's back up to 285. There seems to be a wee bit of turbulence. Oh well, off to bed. See where it's at in the morning.

315.31 Ghash/s now...weird.

Yep. It's a bit disconcerting.

I suppose this number is calculated using a recent "blocks per hour" count and the current difficulty. As block generation is not very homogeneous itself, it's normal that this global hashrate estimate varies with it.

194 Ghash right now.

Btw, what's with the big difference in blocks/hour and traded volumes between bitcoincharts.com and bitcoinwatch.com?

The blocks per hour figure depends on sample size. Bitcoin Charts seems to be looking back 72 blocks. Bitcoin Watch is probably looking back further.
