Title: Brazilīs most influential scientific magazine tries a Bitcoin Paywall
Post by: Mineiro on November 04, 2013, 02:55:57 PM
Brazilian magazine SUPER (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Superinteressante), has just printed its second article covering Bitcoins to celebrate Satoshi’s paper creating the Bitcoin. The magazine is published by Editora Abril (http://www.grupoabril.com.br/IN/institucional/perfil-in.shtml), one of the largest and most influential communications company in Latin America.  "Seven of the ten most read magazines in Brazil are published by Abril, including VEJA, which is the second-largest weekly information magazine in the world, and the largest outside the United States." The bitcoin paywall was developed by MercadoBitcoin.com.br.

The magazine has a text in english describing their expiriment at: http://super.abril.com.br/tecnologia/compre-materias-super-bitcoins-758822.shtml

I think Bitcoin is perfect for mechanisms like this.

I really hope this experiment is successful, but I doubt it. To few are using BTC and they are still to hard to get, for anyone doing it only to read an article.  :-\

I agree that just a few people use Bitcoin.
But we are in a much better place that we were in January, or even 3 months ago!!! This type of experiment makes the news spread for sure...

It's nice to see, but it seems like it will be awhile before there are enough people to make it useful with bitcoin.

That's great. Bitcoin paywall without membership should be a killer app in bitcoin. There are a variety of micro-payment economic activities can be supported by bitcoin.
I mentioned some micro-payment scenarios before.

I think we bitcoiner should promote this idea to the business world.

Indeed, would be perfect without their membership requirement.

First, a paywall is a no go on the internet. Tests has proven that. So i do not think it will work and that they will lose more customers then the ones in the test. Most paying members are (sorry) old members and they are not going to exchange some dollars for a coin they never saw in their life :)

the paywall will come. You don't find any publisher who doesn't say so, and you'll find many successfull experiments. Without some kind of paywall quality journalism will dye.

Nearly no magazine earns something with their online-edition. The most newspapers earn with their print-edition, and this is dying. Once there is a consens along publishers that they stop wasting quality-journalism for free, the consumers will get it. Experiments with paywalls in germany show people are willing to pay if the content is good. Whoever I ask about it - most people tell, that they would pay, but not for the whole month or the complete issue, but for single articles. Actually there is no payment-method to operate this with profit except bitcoin. So yes, this is a very great news, regarding the development of bitcoin (and not just the price) maybe the biggest in this year. I hope they have success, and I hope this engages more magazines to do the same
