Title: LiteCoin CPU Minning ?
Post by: b0ulette on November 05, 2013, 10:20:27 PM

For both files (32-bit and 64-bit version) the www.virustotal.com site reports many positives. Look at these reports:

https://www.virustotal.com/en/file/cd9fd5008246dad98e689bde42d71579125fe7759dd870239f8d43f7dd0f69de/analysis/

The Kaspersky Labs as well as some other AV toolkits says that "it is not a virus" while others mark it as a virus unconditionally.

lavasoft.com (http://www.lavasoft.com/mylavasoft/malware-descriptions/blog/HackToolWin32RemoteAdminf865c19902) defines "not-a-virus:RiskTool.Win32.BitCoinMiner.frk" as follows:

Quote
HackTool. Can be used to investigate, analyze or compromise the system security. Some HackTools are multi-purpose programs, while others may have legitimate uses.
Potentially Unwanted Program. An application that does not display malicious behavior yet is installed without having first sought affirmative user consent for installation. Users may not realize, due to the nature of the installation procedure, that an application they have not explicitly agreed to has been installed. This category can also be used to classify other applications which in a certain context can be wanted e.g. remote administration tools or IRC clients.

To be honest, I am really surprised with all this. You have two options with minerd: either rely on assumption that it is harmless or rebuild it yourself from source. In the former case you have to tell your AV toolkit that the file is not a virus somehow.

As for the other miners you listed, I am not familiar with these, so sorry for being useless.
