Title: Theory crafting
Post by: mike678 on July 28, 2011, 05:02:30 PM
I'm bored so I figured I would start this thread for a fun way for people to be creative and also enlighten people of possible unknown set ups.

Basically you make a miner that is as efficient as you can in megahash per dollar. You have to link to the item it can be sold out however as long as the price is displayed.

I'll start off with my own crazy build to show you can be super creative.

792-8x6770(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=602046&CatId=7005)
290-mobo(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130595R)
75-cpu(http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=567308&CatId=7226)
10-ram(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820134657)
80-psu(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817159101)
6-flash drive(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820241103)
99-8*extender(https://cablesaurus.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1&products_id=9)

and two of these:
http://i940.photobucket.com/albums/ad245/airdatasolutions/miner03.jpg

Finally got my 4th 5830 working on this miner !  Got a great rack/shelf unit for $4.99 at target.  It was in the kitchen utilities section :)  Cards sit nicely on the rack with the pcie connector going through.

Total cost:1362
expected megahash:1920

Megahash per dollar:1.41

This probably isn't the most efficient you could go but its a hell of a lot better then most ratio's and I was just trying to be creative with something people don't really consider,

I guess Ill post another one.

60-case(http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=29729.0)

Total cost:1401
expected megahash:2280

Megahash per dollar:1.63

Lets hear optimized builds already :)

use your first setup with 8 gpus, but not the hd6 crap, put some nice HD5850 on it, expinsive but powerfull, 2 good PSUs with 800-850W and it will be fine.
It will give you about 2,9Ghash

And btw, why have you choosen such expensive boards with full 16 physical lanes per pci-e slot? there are much cheaper boards with just 2 or 3 pci-e 16x slots and a few pci-e 1 slot.
Its better to go for the cheap ones, as you surly know, the amount of lanes doesnt matter per slot.

I'm not actually making these. The reason I picked the 8 pcie x16 because its the only board with 8 pcie slots. In order for the 6770 or the 5770 to compete you need to minimize the costs of all the other materials by loading a board up with as many as possible.

I was just trying to be creative so people would think out side the box.

Also if you want to post the set up your talking about with 2.9 ghash and get the megahash to dollar ratio then we might get the ball rolling.

maybe if the 5970s were actually in stock... and i don't know about using server pcie splitters.... i think it's an expansion card specific to that system... but maybe they work, dunno

Yea I'm not sure if if the splitter would work and I'm just trying to be creative and get people to stop thinking so narrowly that the 5830 and the 5850 are the only option. There are builds out there that make other cards just as competitive.

Hmm I wonder why that splitter looks so familiar...

lol I admit you got me excited :P I decided to test a theoretical build implementing it. :P

No, limit on gpu's is 8.

maybe I don't know much about hardware but shouldn't some kind of 3rd-party cooling be *mandatory* on a mining rig?

otherwise your megahashes will fluctuate with the weather :D

i'm not seeing any fans on your list.

Each card individually wont overheat if you control the clocks. It will overheat when the room temp reaches a certain point or if the cards are too close together. For all the rigs I'm separating them with risers and some I even used this example. http://forum.bitcoin.org/index.php?topic=29729.0

I assume you could have one of these machines with minimal to no ac. If you were to mass produce something like this you'd probably need 24 7 ac in the summer.
