Title: Whatever happened to Ripple?
Post by: miztaziggy on November 06, 2013, 05:35:08 PM
And why is it worth so few BTC any more?

It was down to 5,000 Ripple to 1 BTC at one point...now it's about 35,000

Wait till Jed sells it to Mark, then watch it climb back up.

Maybe because Ripple is not usefull at all.
Or maybe more Ripples are given away, so people exchange it to BTC now.

I saw a claim on one thread that Ripple is now open source. I also saw a claim on the same thread that OpenWhateverTheirNameIs has reduced their XRP holdings from 50% to 25%.

I don't know whether to believe either claim.

Anyone? Where's JoelKatz when you need him? (I'd trust your reply, JoelKatz)

I'm not as well-known as JoelKatz around here (mostly lurked) but perhaps you'll trust my reply re: open-sourcing of Ripple. It's true, Ripple is open-source, the source code is on github and it is publicly accessible... check out http://www.github.com/ripple/rippled (http://www.github.com/ripple/rippled) for the source!

Hopefully you can believe what your eyes show you ;D

Sorry, I have no insight to offer on that. I'm just focused on coding.

Ripple != XRP, it's a decentralized exchange and IOU marketplace.

XRP are imho a bad investment, even more than BTC (where ~10% are currently held by a single person) as there is an entity holding over 90% of the currency. They can be dumped at any time and are also given away for free regularly. Likely both the rising price for BTC (XRP are very easily tradeable for BTC) and the recent giveaways have pushed the price down both against BTC and USD.

Ripple is now open source. Both the client and the server are available on Github. Opencoin is now Ripple Labs. We still hold a significant fraction of the XRP (over 70%), but our plan is to give away most of that, and that's what we've been doing. Ripple Labs has almost 30 employees working full time improving and promoting Ripple.

https://www.google.com/search?q=bitcoin+scam - 4.6 million results

Also interesting: http://www.google.com/trends/explore?q=bitcoin+scam%2C+ripple+scam - new all time high soon? People for sure get more sceptical once the buzz grows larger.

Please show me how it is possible to scam anyone by holding a large amount of worthless assets that can only be traded on the free market - especially considering that BTC are in the same class of assets, just differently distributed than XRP... You won't get any XRP unless you either get them for free or buy them willingly, just like BTC.

Maybe because Ripple is not usefull at all.
Or maybe more Ripples are given away, so people exchange it to BTC now.

Because it can not achieve a significant efficiency advantage inside a dynamic information system, and thus can not achieve perceptual advantage.
