Title: 70$ 5850 keep or sell
Post by: gopher on July 29, 2011, 12:18:17 AM
Just picked up a used 5850 for 70 $ .. Should I mine, or put on ebay and more than double my money, and purchase the bitcoins with the profit? I want to mine, but I would be stupid not to sell this

You can sell if for $170 all day long on ebay if you want to.... or mine with it - won't take long to make back $70 at the hash rate it is capable of.

Could pass the deal on... to me... :D

I'd mine with it. Is there a warranty? If it's a year or three, mine it for half of the warranty period then sell.

Nice find! Personally, I would mine with it. Who knows, you might even get more for it if you wait a while to sell when the supply of new 5850s completely dries up. It's still possible to get them new for around 150 - 160 when a sale pops up, but that won't last forever.

I mine with one 5850.  My estimation based on the price trend of bitcoins is that it will take you ~5 months to mine $170.  Do you need $170 now or in ~5 months?  It's up to you.

Mine with it, very profitable considering you picked it up for $70 & it yields 400mhash/s at best.

In fact at the current & upcoming difficulty you'll pay it off fully within about 2-3 weeks. Not just that, but it has a real resale value of at least $120-$150.

So congrats, you stumbled onto free money (well, minus the power costs.. No free lunch)

if you don't need instant money, just mine with it until you don't want it anymore, then sell it.

;D ;D ;D got the 5850 running, i can only pull 340mhash from it, but i think its because of a weak powersupply. new one in route. I checked my status on the slush pool. i finally found my first block! woohoo! i know i dont get anything extra, but it is cool! Just started on july 22 , now i am feeling lucky. Solo mining seems a bit more complicated with more security concerns. I have to setup a pc running the bitcoin program in server mode and have it on the net 24/7. this opens my wallet.dat up to the network, right?

Keep for sure, 70$ is probably the price of this card 2 years after lol, now you can still find 4850 bit lower than this price, 4870 at 80ish
