Title: How many coins do we think have been lost forever?
Post by: leemar on November 07, 2013, 05:59:51 PM
Wild guess, from stories and anecdotes I know of, 20-25%.

Attrition in the early days must have been reasonably high when they had little or no value?

Thanks nice thread.

So confirmed lost is approx 63K = 5%, so suspect real number must be over 10%, again wild guess.

63k aren't 5%, those are 0.3% of the 21 Mio Bitcoins (or about 0.6% of the currently issued ones).
I think the amount of coins lost is more than 1 Mio Bitcoins though.

1 200th = 0.5% in my book if 1% is 100th?

12 mill / 63K = approx 1 200th, no?

Sometimes even simple math is difficult xD
Yes ~0.5% would be the actual number :o

At least no one will accuse us of being Satoshi  :D

looks like trying to count is a fruitless exercise in any case.

I think lots of BTCs are gone forever, about 15% of what has been mined totally. So thats about 2 million coins.

With a range of error of + or - 14.5%

Agreed, but I also suspect the rate of attrition will decelerate sharply, as the price increases and people are more careful and coins move to stronger/safer hands.

I think as the value goes up and up, there will be a lot less people losing their bitcoin. Heck I spent the few I had a long time ago too recklessly.
