Title: This is how I made my Paper wallet, is it safe?
Post by: F-bernanke on November 08, 2013, 09:00:56 AM
Hello Bitcoinfreaks ;D

I just made some wallets, and wanted to make sure if they are safe, this is how i did it:

1. Downloaded Ubuntu iso, burned it on DVD.
2. Removed Harddisk of laptop.
3. Boot from Ubuntu DVD.
4. Switch on wifi, load bitaddress.org, switch wifi off.
5. plug in printer
6. print wallets
7. unplug everything from power.

safe?

I guess that this is safe enough.

1. Download Ubuntu iso, burn it on DVD
2. Download bitaddress.org html with javascript (https://github.com/pointbiz/bitaddress.org) and burn it on CD
3. Remove Harddisk of laptop
4. Boot from Ubuntu DVD.
5. Load bitaddress.org local html site from CD.
6. plug in printer
7. print wallets
8. unplug everything from power.

EDIT: put just 10 BTC on one wallet address (better 5 BTC or even better 1 BTC) if practicable! to avoid the damage if a possible but very unlikely address collision occur. then rent a bank safe deposit box and you can forget it for 5, 10 or even 20 years.

did you disable your sound card in the BIOS? A compromised OS could send your keys via morse code through you speakers! :o

Thanks,

Switching on wifi for a minute could give me a compromised version of bitaddress with predictable keys?

Yes, I will split them up with 5/10 BTC each.

yes, it is an additional risk which should be eliminated.

come on, you should know better than that!

His printer is gathering all data in it's hidden drive. When it gets thrown out - NSA agents disguised as bums will retrieve information.

I don't think you need to unplug your HDD, but it's not going to hurt.

There is a small problem though -- your computer doesn't have very much randomness when you just boot from a live cd and generate your address right away.  So you could give it an hour of doing random stuff to generate some randomness if you were really paranoid.

And you could pre-download the key generation software, so that you don't have to expose your computer to wifi at all.  But, of course you'd have to be sure the computer you used to do that wasn't compromised.

You should go wardriving once in a while. It's unbelievable how many unprotected networks are still around.

I've tried loading the bitaddress html with java from the CD, but I could not load from CD in ubuntu live. So I loaded it on a USB stick, should be fine right?

Also, To withdraw from Stamp, just fill in one of the paper wallets adresses and wait, right? Can I pay a fee to speed it up?

Yes it is totally safe. But do not give the private key to anyone.

I downloaded the ZIP (on the right). And extracted it onto a USD stick.

Could I use https://github.com/cantonbecker/bitcoinpaperwallet (https://github.com/cantonbecker/bitcoinpaperwallet) instead? Is it as safe?

Author of that service here. Yes, if you trust bitaddress.org, you should be able to trust bitcoinpaperwallet.com as well (provided you use the same security sensibility, starting with downloading the ZIP instead of running off of the website.)

Bitcoinpaperwallet.com is a fork of bitaddress.org and can be verified to use the same javascript generator. It's just a different look & feel, and it's only suitable for creating paper wallets. (I stripped out the features for brain wallets, etc.)

Plus, there's a new holiday design to enjoy. :)
