So I found an old Bitcoin wallet on an old computer (from December 2010, back when BTC were about $0.50). I cannot recall how many BTC are on this wallet (might range between 1 - 50+).

I have the "wallet.dat" file, tho not sure how to best view it.  Can it be imported into Bitcoin-QT on my new system?  Or would it be better to use something like this: https://blockchain.info/wallet/import-wallet

I don't want to screw anything up.  What's the best way?

i dont think you can import a wallet.dat file on blockchain.info.

• back up your existing wallet.dat
• navigate to your bitcoin-qt app data directory and then delete the wallet in there
• copy the old wallet into your bitcoin app data directory
• open your client and send the funds to your normal wallet
• delete the old wallet and past back in your normal one from where ever you backed it up

Import it onto blockchain like you posted is the safest method.  If that fail (it shouldn't) then replace the existing wallet.dat with your new one - but make sure to back it up first!

First back it up. Then download the client and replace the new wallet.dat with the old one.

haha, that happens to my cash wallet  all the time.  And my debit cards, it drives me up the wall...  :'(

hmmmm.  okay, i replaced current wallet.dat (backed up) with old wallet.dat ... and according to Bitcoin-QT, the balance is ZERO (0)!  :'(

Can this be right?  I was pretty sure I had *something* on this old wallet from 2010. 

Bitcoin-QT is still syncing.  Would a full sync make a difference?

just install Multibit its easy & fast.

a full sync might make a diffrence but now you have the wallet address copy the address and past it into the search bar half way down the screen on blockchain.info
it will tell you the remaining balance of that addresd

if you dont want to wait forever for the sync you could send it to a sr member i know let him sync it and he will send the coins to your new address for a small fee

make sure theres no other addresses in the receive tab. if theres more than 1 they need checking sepratly

You can check it by yourself. It seems never been used.

In wallet.dat, you can use many addresses, it is best replace your wallet.dat and resync from start

You should start Bitcoin-qt with the -rescan flag when you "give" it a new wallet, or else it won't see the transactions.
The fact that "your bitcoin address" shows a balance of 0 means nothing. If you sent 1 transaction the remaining funds might be in one of the change addresses.

It seems we really need a more user-friendly client to bring BTC to more people in the world.

How do you print out a wallet I didn't know you could do that

a wallet is just a collection of private keys. you just print out the private keys. try the export function in your bitcoind or qt client, or check out bitaddress.org

He said that one address was empty, but he probably had more.

Just download Bitcoin-qt and put in the wallet.dat files. wait about a day and you will know the answer.. :)

you can't just use blockchain.info for one adress, if you used it you probably had a lot more..
anyways, thumbs up, hope you find some BTC :)
