Title: Heat sink question

Alright so I noticed that the AMD Sempron 130 Sargas 2.6GHz(http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819103939) doesn't come with a heat sink. I really want to stop as much noise as possible if I were to get this heat sink http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103087 would I be able to keep the cpu cool with out the fan?

I wouldn't run without the fan - if you want silent you'll want a much larger passive heatsink.

I've got Sempron 140s underclocked to 800mhz and undervolted, the CPU fan is basically inaudible.

It's certainly no where near the noise a desk fan and 6 GPU fans whirring at 100% make ;)

Yea the problem is its more money if I go for the bigger heatsinks :P I think I'm going to spend 3 dollars more and get this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835103075

It looks like it's much easier to take the fan on or off so I can test if its possible without a fan. Another reason I don't want the fan is I want to make this as lean on electricity as possible.

If you can measure the draw of that fan relative to the rest of the system you have some very sensitive equipment. i'm disspointed to see newegg doesn't have the 140 in stock anymore they used to have it boxed with the retail HSF for only a few dollars more.

It's not that my system that I'm building is sensitive I'm just trying to penny pinch where possible. The cpu means jack shit when mining I'm trying to avoid all extra expenditures for it.

Or you could get water cooling setup.
Im running 2 Antec KUHLER H2O 620. They were a bit noisy for the first 6 hours but now they dont make a sound since all the air bubbles are out of the pump.

I stated above I'm trying to penny pinch where possible lol This would hardly be penny pinching.

Buy a stock cooler, you don't need anything fancy for a mining rig. Noise from a cpu fan will also be the least of your worries with multiple gpus going full throttle.

You probably can't get comfortable temps with this tiny cooler, if you want silence you need a big heatpipe based cooler. Go find an coolermaster hyper 212+, that should work passively. It should sell for 20$~30$

This is a Sempron not an i7 its not going to be generating nearly as much heat as those. At worst case the 15 dollar heatsink(including the fan) will work no problem. One of the reviews even said he ran prime95 and the highest temp his cpu got was 35c and he is running the 11 dollar heat sink.

You wanted to cool it without the fan, that puny little heatsink won't do it, even a low end graphics card will heat it up considerably. But of course it will work with the fan.

I dunno I'll just have to test it when It comes in. I'm building a skeleton of a case so it's not like the heat will be trapped inside a closed computer case.

The max TDP for this is only 45W. If you clock it down, since CPU power not really an issue, you should be able to get away with just the heatsink and fan off. The motherboard might scream about it so you should boot it with the fan on, change any applicable BIOS settings before unplugging the fan.

As long as you have a heatsink on the cpu, with at least some air ventilation, the CPU should be fine if it settles at some reasonable temperature, core temps up to 70C should be fine. If you're not going to run the fan, removing it from the sink would probably help as well.

If you want to get a bigger heatsink, you should look for one with wider gaps between the fins. Tighter fin spacing are better for forced air cooling.
