Title: I need help with radeon hd 7950
Post by: parham_dante on November 09, 2013, 02:15:28 PM
Hi everyone
my HD 7950 hast rate is about 375 kh/s using cgminer but I thought It maight be around 650 kh/s
I want to know how to improve it to 650 kh/s or higher
and is there another miner better than cgminer
thanks a lot

You need to have a better settings, even at stock clock you should get 550 hash...

Agreed, you will most likely have to 'tweak' your settings. Check out the cgminer SCRYPT-README for a good explanation of the 'Tuning process' for a 7970... Should be a good place to start.

Try slowly increase intensity from 14, and check when HW errors start increasing a lot

Hey it's normally easier (at least in my opinion) to point your .bat file to a conf file which contains all of the settings for your cards. This is how I have mine setup, the .bat file contains the following:
setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1

cgminer -c litecoin.conf
_________
Where litecoin.conf is a new text file I have saved (This is mining for litecoin instead of bitcoin, but you set this up the same regardless. Inside of this conf notepad file you can then include all of your settings, such as the following (which I am using a 7970, you'll probably want to lower your core/mem speeds to 1100/1300):

Not necessarily a bad option but if you're not interested in setting it up and tweaking it yourself I'd recommend just investing in the coins directly instead.

Its hard, but the truth is you'll only be able to mine 0.01944971 BTC even if you improve it to 650 kh/s

why hw errors start happen when the intensity is only 15 and hash rate is about 500
i mean can cpu bottleneck or using old motherboard cause this problem or it is a bug in the program ?

You shouls not mine using radeon hd 7950 but use ASIC hardware instead, generally you mine at a pool which means if the pool finds a block (which rewards coins) you get a portion of the coins depending on how much you contribute. Depending on the coin and how much you contribute you could be paid 1 or less, in the end the number of coins you get doesn't really matter, its the exchange rate you get that does.

As others have said in the thread, stay away from mining SHA256 based coins with GPU's, even with free electricity it's not profitable at all.

Consider doing some scrypt mining (Litecoin, Feathercoin are 2 big ones).

My settings for my 7950's are as follows :

Core : 1000mhz
Memory : 1450mhz
Vcore : 1000mv
Fan speed : 80%

I get around 600k/hash per card with this setup, using 20 intensity, 2 threads and 21712 thread concurrency. I use GUIminer btw and not cgminer. Yeah, I'm lazy to change it, but so far it works.

The cards I'm using are either Powercolor or Club 3D HD7950's. If you are seeing H/W errors it could be either due to your card getting too hot, or you are pushing too hard with overclocks. Try using the standard settings and tweak from there, no 2 cards are the same.

I tried that but I got error : GPU 0 failure, disabling !!
I must admit that my cpu is AMD athlon X2 dual core 5200+ 2.70 GHz

I want to know that if hardware failure and "GPU 0 failure, disabling !!" are cause by my poor hardware or not ?

thanks a lot for taking time

As indicated in the specifications of your power supply the only channel above 20 amp is channel 12V4 + (which is 26amps). So you must to connect the GPU to this channel (only GPU and no other things like HD, other PCI accessories,fan...) otherwise you do not have enough power to handle LTC mining.

This is a table with the power requirements of each GPU:
http://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/printer/power-requirements-for-graphics-cards
 (http://forum-en.msi.com/faq/article/printer/power-requirements-for-graphics-cards)

how do you see the 7950 requires 25amps.

Is it a brand new or already used 7950 you are using here? Myself, I bought a secondhand 7950 some time ago which would crash if the intensity went any higher than 250 KH/s (Scrypt) but after taking the fan off, scraping the manufacturer heatsink material off and replacing it with a professional ceramic (DON'T USE METALLIC!!) heatsink compound I bought for a few buck from the local computer part store it's been running perfectly between 550 - 600 KH/s since. I make it a practice now to de-gunk and replace the compound on any card I get second-hand now.

Did your card overheat before doing the step you mention?

Yep, though it didn't actually get to the point of overheating it would just go into shutdown/bad card.

Which is really weird, but I guess you solve it by thermal paste so it must be heat related..

Try this configuration:

cgminer.exe --scrypt -o http://xxx -u xxx -p xxx --lookup-gap 2 --gpu-fan 100 --temp-cutoff 77 --gpu-engine 1000 --gpu-memclock 1350 --gpu-vddc 1.105 --shaders 1792 --thread-concurrency 21712 -g 1 -v 1 --worksize 256 -I 17

I use cgminer 3.4.2

I tried that but I got error : GPU 0 failure, disabling !!
I must admit that my cpu is AMD athlon X2 dual core 5200+ 2.70 GHz
and I use 2gig ram DDR 2
my board is a gigabyte GA-M56S-S3 with 200 Megahertz bus clock
I want to know that if hardware failure and "GPU 0 failure, disabling !!" are cause by my poor hardware or not ?
and and I also want to know that is it necessary to upgrade my rig or not?
thanks a lot for taking time
I want to upgrade my rig and I do not know whether to choose which of these mobos
760GA-P43 (FX) or 970A-G43
and I want to buy a sempron 145 cpu that I know I must flash the bios in order to use the cpu I mentioned
the main difference between 2 mobos is that 970A-G43 has 2 pcie 16x and 2 pcie 1x while 760GA-P43 (FX) has one pcie 16x and 3 pcie 1x
and I want to use 4 radeon HD 7950 and I have raisers enough
my question is that if I use 3 16x-1x raisers my hash rate drops or it will remain the same ,and please tell that what do you recommend ?
thanks a lot

How much physical RAM do you have in your pc? With Scrypt mining you have to have more or less the same amount of physical ram in the rig as VRAM (gfx ram).

Try to write in your .bat file these commands (before cgminer.exe...) :

setx GPU_MAX_ALLOC_PERCENT 100
setx GPU_USE_SYNC_OBJECTS 1

cgminer.exe --scrypt -o http://...............
