Title: Pilgrim Kālua (theme): First Thanksgiving at Satoshi Forest
Post by: Phinnaeus Gage on November 09, 2013, 09:05:18 PM
<once again seeking a little latitude from the mods if this is in the wrong section>

EDIT: I changed the title of this thread since the initial amount requested has been reached, albeit I'm still seeking sponsors for the signage at whatever they desire to donate. I'm still wresting with what is better: in or at Satoshi Forest.

Thanks to some brainfart, Jason has committed to the idea of having the first ever Thanksgiving in Satoshi Forest so that the homeless nearby will be able to enjoy probably the best Thanksgiving they've even eaten, for we're goin' all out and doing it a al kālua (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kalua) with myself at the helm.

The tad support we're seeking to raise is ~$500 USD via Bitcoin via this thread. Once again, use the Sean's Outpost Bitcoin wallet address 1M72Sfpbz1BPpXFHz9m3CdqATR44Jvaydd for all donations, but please post here if you're supporting this specific cause so that the dollars raised to date can be tracked and tallied accordingly.

Here's the QR-Code for the above address:

http://blockchain.info/qr?data=1M72Sfpbz1BPpXFHz9m3CdqATR44Jvaydd&size=200

This request/endeavor/event is over and beyond, and not related to The Mega Thread that Feeds People in Need (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=295211.0), of which is serving a separate, yet similar purpose, garnering $1.25 USD donations on a continuous basis.

I haven't discuss this yet with Jason King, but this would be a perfect time to pass out Christmas presents. I'm thinking blankets. (see what I did there?)

I'm personally leaving out the Sunday before Thanksgiving to arrive there by Tuesday, thus giving me two full days prior to prepare for the event, one of which is constructing the imu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imu). I'll be camping out, sans bringing a tent, the entire time I'm there, heading back home to Illinois on Saturday.

With the exception of a few food items, i.e. cranberry jelly, my favorite, all the food will be cooked/processed there in the woods a la a hybrid of Pilgrim and Hawaiian cooking preparations, with some contemporary outdoor cooking methods added to the mix for good measure, not to mention practicality.

For full disclosure, and to not take away the dignity of those in need, the first ever Thanksgiving in Satoshi Forest may be considered a PR move for Sean's Outpost/Satoshi Forest/Bitcoin/Sponsors, but my hope is that such doesn't take away from the overall objective--to have the homeless nearby enjoy a VERY fine Thanksgiving meal, of which afterward they'll be able to spend the night camping out in Satoshi Forest. Hope it doesn't rain, but if it does, so what! I'll get just as wet.

That said, coverage of the event will be made available via a press release, and hopefully Radio and TV. I'm leaving this aspect in Jason's hands to give him something to do.  ;D

I see no problem with raising the $500, for it's such a small amount and we have plenty of time. We won't need any big corporate sponsorship(s) for this undertaking, but if only 10 Bitcoin entities, regardless of their size and reach, donated $50 each, the goal will be accomplished. For such a donation, a primitive sign, prominently displayed on the grounds, will depict the name and a QR-Code linking to your site. Bear in mind that such is not intended to carter to those in attendance for the feast, for most won't own a smartphone, but directed toward those who will view the images taken sometime in the future, with http://seansoutpost.com being one such place for sure and, hopefully, if the PR is done correctly, on several news sites/outlets.

Any monies over the $500 USD and not used generated via this thread, will remain part of Sean's Outpost's general fund, but chances are what'll be needed for this endeavor may surpass the requested amount, thus hoping that the $500 USD consist of the majority of total amount that'll be outlaid.

Any food left over immediately after the event will be delivered to others in need that are unable to attend the festivities due to circumstances beyond their control. Nothing will go to waste. Some food may stay on site to be served as breakfast/lunch the next day, predicated on what's left over and storage abilities. If it's a cool night, that'll be our refrigerator.

Post #2 will be used to show all the donations and $50 USD sponsors to date. If you express to be a sponsor, please provide a QR-Code image linking to your intended site so that it can be copied and affixed to the sign accordingly.

All fellow bitcoiners are welcome to attend at no charge nor obligations. Bring your smartphones and conduct a Satoshi Square right there in Satoshi Forest if you like.

Thank you in advance and, as always, please ask any questions or express any concerns via this thread or PM.

Looks like we have our first sponsor, albeit a larger donation then I envisioned, seeking only $50 USD shots, but it'll work out just the same.

Ok, I got the go ahead from Leslie. Let's do a big ass Thanksgiving cook out in Satoshi Forest.

Great idea. Wish we could join brother. Just sent ~.9 BTC to help with the expenses.

I look forward to seeing the tx so that I can add it to the tally, grabhive.

Looks like it posted. 0.90073307 BTC.

Thank you, grabhive, from all those that will be able to enjoy a fine Thanksgiving dinner in Satoshi Forest (2013).

Okay, this is getting outta hand! We're already over $400 toward a $500 initial goal, and this campaign is only three hours old.

Since the first two donors seem to not be influenced by the $50 USD sponsorship request, I feel it prudent to decrease that amount to only $20 USD via Bitcoin (or alt) to have a sponsorship sign on site during the festivity. To be clear, these will not be professionally made signs, but will definitely serve their purpose--exposure for your website/business.

All bitcoiners are welcome to attend free of charge and without any commitments. Just post that you're coming and how many are tagging along to make sure there's enough food for everybody.

And bring a guitar (or some other musical instrument).

I'm assuming there won't be any drugs or alcohol served during the feast, so it should be safe for children to attend. There'll be plenty of eyeballs on the lookout for ANY nefarious activities as well, so that unsaid concern should be covered.

I'm leaning toward only the following beverages to be served: Juice(s); Coffee; Herbal Tea(s), hot and cold; Bottled Water. Staying away from sweet Kool Aid and Coke, Pepsi, etc.

Any other suggestions?

If I prove that my account was hacked, can I back out?  ;D

Seriously, I have no problem with orchestrating this once I'm on site. Prior to me getting there, I will have you take care of a couple loose ends which shouldn't be much of an effort. If so, tough!  ;D

How do you like my idea of passing out Christmas presents to the homeless consisting of blankets? Genius, eh? Unless the law has been changed, I don't believe it's against the law to give blankets as Christmas presents. Also, it's not against the law to give Christmas presents in July, March, October, August, January,... See what I'm getting at?

I have permission to attach cwil's name to the ~$100 donation going toward Thanksgiving in Satoshi Forest. Thank you so kindly, cwil.

There should be plenty of pics and videos of the festivity. Now, who's bringing the guitar?

I didn't know you play. I can only pick my nose and sing in the key of off.

I just received another PM of which the sender donated a full bitcoin to this very cause, so official we're good. I'm going to reply to him to see if he wants his name attached publically to the donation, and if so is there a company name associated with him.

I just received permission from justusranvier to attach his name to the 1 BTC donation, and thanked him so kindly for his generosity. He reminded me that he was one of the two tagalongs that went to lunch with Jason, Rassah and I in Atlanta. They all could have had anything they wanted on the menu, but all opted for a traditional burger or some other sandwich, whereas I had the steak and shrimp. I'm such a pig!

What I only desire now is 9 more sponsors at $20 each so that there's some signage in the woods for any media (hopefully) to see. If not, pics and videos by fellow bitcoiners will give plenty of coverage for the cause, making sure many end up on Sean's Outpost's website.

I'm in the process of penning a press release, readied in about a couple days, and would love to incorporate some Bitcoin entities acting as sponsors into the copy, so for $20 you could get a link/juice that way as well.

I have another thread going in Off-topic seeking advice on Kālua if anybody can lend some. (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=329589.0)

Upon further review, thanks to the generosity of three bitcoiners, requesting a $20 USD (originally $50 USD) sponsorship package consisting of sign placement, et al. is no longer needed.

But, I really desire to place at least 10 signs of bitcoin-accepting entities in Satoshi Forest during the Thanksgiving feast to feed the local homeless. I only need 9 more to accomplish said task.

Here's the new offer: Donate whatever you want, a US cent or above, and a sign will be made depicting your company's name with a QR-Code linking to your site. I will then put the name of your company and how much you've donated to Post #2 of this thread showcasing your donation. The top three sponsorship donors will be mentioned in an upcoming press release, provided permission is first given to do such, of which a URL will be linked to your website.

Where else can you get coverage like that for at least only $.01 USD (one penny)? Nobody will (or should) judge you for being frugal, and I'll be more than happy to provide my time and material to accomplish said tasks regardless of the donated amount. I'll gladly do it for a penny, but it won't be done for free.

Another option for any Bitcoin related business is to donate only $1.25 USD via Bitcoin via this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=1.40, then let me know you've done such, and I'll gladly construct a sign due to your generousity.

I'm not selling out cheap! It's a trick! Any sponsor(s) will see that a penny is a bargain, but they won't be able to justify such a donation in their mind, thus donating more, especially since it's going toward a good cause--Sean's Outpost. How's that for full disclosure? They don't call me TMIBTCITW for nothing, now do they?  ::)

I'm in for sure.

I'm already matching 100% a sales donation from one of my websites (see audit here (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AumvZZPTLrLkdFNqbFEweDBpb0Vxb0l1YVB1M1RXa2c&usp=sharing)) for some reddit-inspired t-shirt orders.  Happy to kick it up another 100% from the current marker for a total matched donation of 300%.  As for right now, the current site donation is $36.90 x my original match = $73.80 x my new match would = $147.60.  If any more sales come through before the donation deadline, I'll keep the meter climbing.

My previous site (http://www.7bucktees.com) isn't my focus right now, I'm debuting a new site (http://www.coinsmiths.com) that I'd like to use as the sponsor.

Edit/addition: I'll also throw in 1-2 dozen long sleeve shirts to clothe the guests, printed with the Sean's Outpost logo for sure, and my logo somewhere discrete if acceptable.  That's another $120-$240 worth of donations, depending on what I can get in time to print and ship.

Wonderful! Wonderful! Wonderful! I'll update Post #2 of this thread to reflect your generous donation. I'll be thinking of you, among other sponsors/donors, when I'm personally digging the imu (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_oven#Hawaiian_Imu) pit--alone!

I'm putting you down for $147.60 USD, but please provide me the BlockChain tx whenever it comes available, for I'm not sure when you're planning on making the donation, and I'm too embarrassed to ask.

Per Jason's kick in the ass, I started a Reddit thread: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1qf0xm/first_thanksgiving_in_satoshi_forest_seeks/

I foresee no problem with getting 10 sponsors, but Ideally I would love to make 100 signs having them place throughout Satoshi Forest. Jason King doesn't know it yet, but the signs will be staying up long after Thanksgiving (2013) is over.

Thanks, but no thanks, bud, for I got this one covered. Apologies for not answering your question as to what kind of signs, but I'm being tightlipped on that aspect for now, albeit I have given out hints. Suffice to say, there shouldn't be any disappointments.

Works for me.

I'll be donating the BTC definitely before the end of the week.  We are still getting some orders for the "To The Moon" shirts, so if I can get a few more orders, I can donate quite a bit more BTC.  Plus I need to get to my offline wallet PC and transfer the fundage into my hot wallet, and I'm not back home til Wednesday night.

Hey Phin, please give our advertising space to some other Bitcoin-oriented non-profit or cause.

Due to a 48 hour auction I conducted, another chunk of change is expected to be added toward this endeavor thanks to Garr255's winning bid. https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=331333.0

Any Bitcoin related business that you would like to have a sign, depicting its name, placed on the grounds during Thanksgiving at Satoshi Forest, simply donate whatever to 1M72Sfpbz1BPpXFHz9m3CdqATR44Jvaydd, whereupon I will make sure it happens.

I just paid my brother-in-law, Martin Basurto, $350 USD for a killer buffalo suede leather purse. Since I don't toot a purse, I need to give this away to some deserving person. Let me think, who deserves this? Still thinking... thinking... Got it! Jason King's wife. I'll hand-deliver it when I get to Satoshi Forest this Thanksgiving. Rumor has it there's a feast for the homeless during that time. She's going to have to come to the forest though, for I'll be too busy digging a hole for the imu on my first day there, Tuesday the 26th, with Wednesday taking care of final prep, then cooking my ass off come Thursday.

I'm still looking for sponsors in the form of owners of Bitcoin-accepting entities hawking products and services. All you have to do to have a sign made in some business's name is to donate ANYTHING to 1M72Sfpbz1BPpXFHz9m3CdqATR44Jvaydd, then link the tx on this thread, and you're golden. The signs will be prominently displayed during the Thanksgiving at Satoshi Forest.

For all practical purposes, enough money is on hand to accomplish this feast feat, but I feel compelled to have signage in place during (and remaining afterward) the festivities, even if only a couple dollars (literally) is raised. I don't give a damn! I just want signage, and the only way a sign will be made is for you to ask and donate WHATEVER. Surely, you don't expect me to email or PM entities, along with donating some trifle amount in their names to accomplish such a simple feat, do you?

Here's the blockchain transfer: https://blockchain.info/tx/65958d456b2a2b160f0eb09e446b1851e40785ddba4af932b5976eca540e3a87

Looks like the Android blockchain app doesn't apply a fee, derp.  If it doesn't go through I'll resend it with a fee.  Never sent coin from blockchain app before.

Update: 2 confirmations, so all is good.

Great, Bees! Look forward to meeting you guys in Las Vegas, for that's where I'm heading next to solicit a million dollars in donations for Typhoon Haiyan Relief Fund: https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=332561.0

I'll also have the sign you requested in tow.

Road trip starts tomorrow, although I was to head out today, but had to crawl under the house to repair some pipes due to an early freeze, coupled with them been old.

Looks like I'll be hitting rain all day Tuesday through Alabama, then be in Florida during their cold snap, sleeping on the ground at Satoshi Forest with temps in the low thirties. Yes, it'll be a three goat night each day I stay there, then head to Las Vegas for the conference where, at least, the temps will be in the upper 80's, unless...

Jason PM'ed me and said the tent is up. I'll be there later this afternoon to orchestra Thanksgiving at Satoshi Forest.

I have paint in tow for the making of the signs, along with old nails pulled from barn wood. I have an idea as to what I'm going to source for the wood for the signs. Since I didn't get many bites for entities to be placed on the signs, I'm using the list from The Bitcoin Foundation, along with the few that supported this particular endeavor, i.e. Bees Brothers (http://www.beesbros.com/). Also, http://www.coinsmiths.com/ and http://www.srilankacampaign.org (this one suggested by grabhive).

Currently at McDonald's in Pensacola after meeting up with Jason at Satoshi Forest.

Due to the whether, along with other fine local NPOs feeding the homeless tomorrow (and me running late due to affairs at home, then traffic in route), we find it prudent to do the prep tomorrow, then cook on Friday, thus those is need can enjoy fine meals come Friday and Saturday (and maybe Sunday).

Jason is heading outta the country on Friday, leaving Adam, et al. with me. Friday morning is when we'll pick up the supplies we'll need to see this through fruition.

Meanwhile, you all keep warm while I snuggle up under a pile of blankets on the ground at Satoshi Forest where the temp is expected to drop below 29o, with a wind chill, tonight.

Now, if you'll excuse me, I'm goin' to try to hook up with this toothless janitor chick and see if she wants to come to the forest with me tonight. I'm sure that if we procreate, our children will be born toothless. On second thought, she may take me up on the idea, so it's probably best to not pursue the matter, albeit she keeps staring at me--and smiling.

I wonder if she has any idea that I'm...

RASH!

Don't know if caused by the Whataburger I ate, something in the blankets, the cold, poison ivy, oak, or sumac, or from elsewhere, but I have a rash from my beltline all the way down to my knees, mostly on my ass. I even have blood spots in my underwear. Not in pain, but highly uncomfortable.

I'm not allergic to anything, don't think, so assume it'll pass. Going to be diggin' the imu pit shortly and get a little fire goin' in it, readying it for tomorrow. I wonder if there's any alligators in the swamp adjacent to Satoshi Forest.

Update: Thanks to a piss-poor job by Team Satoshi Forest they did to clear the land, I ran over a sharp 1"+ tree stump and sliced my front tire. When Jason showed up, I put on the donut spare, not realizing I left the jack at home. Jason and Adam left, whereupon I headed out to put air in the spare, for it was low, but not flat. I made it about a mile before I was riding on the rim.

Called A+ towing and had it towed to Walmart to replace both front tires tomorrow, for seriously they were due and I was planning on doing it anyway prior to heading to Las Vegas. But, here's the rub: I'm now in a hotel room here in Pensacola, oppose to sleeping at Satoshi Forest, where there's this fuckin' rooster next door...

Note: Don't go to Walmart in Pensacola, FL, tonight. The place is packed, and I was lucky to get the remaining empty spot by the auto repair section. All the surrounding businesses that are closed today are filled will autos. Oddly, people leaving the store were carrying single bags. I saw no shopping carts. Many were leaving empty-handed.

Shouldn't effect the timeline, for tomorrow afternoon Adam will be swingin' by so that we can go shopping for supplies, then put the six birds in the ground come Saturday.

I dug the imu pit and cleaned up around the place. I procured the wood for the signs of which I'll make Saturday and place on the trees, then snap pics of them in place. Took several pics today, one of half a hole, then a whole hole. Started a fire in the hole to get the embers a goin', using misc. rotten wood on site. Already on hand are bundles of hardwood to heat the rocks/bricks for the Kālua.

When it rains, it pours!

The part I needed for the Caddy was supposed to be in about 8AM, but didn't come in till noon. Wrong part! But was needed anyway... then they broke it. Luckily, the auto supply ordered two, so they had the other delivered. The other end I truly needed was replaced with a quality used part. The part was compromised due to an oil leak of which now needs to be fixed.

During the interim, the truck we were using to do round robins of pickin' up other needed supplies decided it no longer wanted to start, thus had to resolve that issue.

The lava rocks and the rest of the supplies are on site, sans the turkeys still in the fridge, ready to put in the ground late tomorrow morning. In the afternoon, all the signs will be made and affixed to trees, then pics taken.

Had to stay in the hotel tonight due to not knowing if my car would be outta the shop, along with the back up vehicle having issues. Will probably spend tomorrow night at Satoshi Forest, having already spent the coldest night of the year there here in Pensacola, FL.

Due to all the unforeseen delays, the turkeys were put in the imu oven (underground) yesterday afternoon, to be uncovered late this morning. How much do these six donated turkeys cost if purchased you ask? Only about a hundred dollars--EACH. Lyrics come to mind: When it says organic, organic, organic, on the label, label, label...

I've taken a many pics, with more to be a taken, during the entire process and of my stay here at Satoshi Forest. Honestly, this place would make a fine getaway/camping excursion for any fellow Bitcoiner interested in a mini vacation/holiday.

So what actually happened, Phinnaeus? :) Pics? Has the dinner not transpired?

Pics forthcoming, and the dinner didn't happen on Thanksgiving day due to me arriving late and car problems, mentioned above, but still the turkeys got into the ground yesterday and uncovered 22 hours later. I'm here to tell you that them 6 half-cooked $100 USD birds are the best looking man has ever seen. Translated, them weren't fully cooked, thus now are in conventional ovens to complete the cooking process. Once cooked, all the turkeys will be turned into meals or sandwiches. Jason's wife cooked the dressing at home, since would have been pressed for room in the imu, coupled with it was prudent that it be fully cooked with no room for error due to health concerns.

I believe my error was not having enough hot hardwood coals at the base.

As far as the homeless turnout went, there was only one guy spending the night there, but was outta pocket during the coldest nights, of which I spent the coldest night on site, as well as last night. I picked up a cough last night, and am opting to spend my last night here in Pensacola, FL, in a hotel room. The other homeless opted for either indoors or at another camp, but some of them started drifting in yesterday.

I have a few more signs to make and put up tomorrow before heading out to Biloxi to look up a myriad of friends. From there, it's off to Austin, TX, then Las Vegas (not NM).

The general consensus is that they all love Sean's Outpost, oppose to other sites they've lived at. Jason has some grand plans for the site, all of which is not outta the realm of possibilities.
