Because it is being done by the business school, it will probably focus on the ecoomics aspects, as opposed to teh technical coding aspects of cryptocurrency.

Well that's not only the university of Stanford that's been doing this there are many more institutions that are providing workshops for cryptocurrencies related stuff and giving suitable certificates to the people who are attending it .
That's showing how bitcoins is been accepted both professionally and educationally, Stanford is a big name and I think this will help tighten the grip of cryptocurrencies over the market.

Thats a good step forward but unfortunately I am wondering why the computer field is not taking the part into this program. I mean coding is very much important aspect as compared to the economic studies for now. What I mean is simple fact, if you dont get the developments done in the crypto currencies then you dont get back the full working model for the same. Bitcoin is sensitive matter for now in terms of its scalability issues, mining difficulties and much more. All these things have to be cleared in the long run to catch good economic back bone and then whatever they study afterwards would be very interesting! I mean its really good that at leats they have started with something but for future purpose we need to fill the gaps.

I do not know why the Department of Economics/Business will study the Cryptocurrency, although it is a technology closer to the computer and programming.
Personally I do not believe in the role of Cryptocurrency economically and I do not think it will be possible to study or evaluate them based on the laws of economics and business administration(no one can Predicts it).
It is best to teach the Blockchain and the programming languages built on it(how to build tokens/coins, reading source codes and Enhanced protection).

It really feels good to see some great news out of all the fud that I mostly see/read every time I scroll down on every section of this forum. This happening is really a big step for this industry because a famous school offering this course will obviously attract other universities as well to do the same. In return, it will cause more curiosity for the people who are doubting this industry or for the ones that haven't heard of it yet. And as more graduates of this course emerge, more countries may even legalize crypto currencies! The possibilities are endless!

Thought so. I suppose people that are already knowledgeable with programming no longer need to study about it? Considering it's Stanford, most of it would probably discuss how bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can be integrated into the financial sector, like loans/credits for example.

There are many universities selling straight pseudo-scams, I say pseudo-scams because the information contained in the courses, typically masters, are stuff that you could find online for free, so you are just paying to get some accreditation.

I think this trend is a dying one. A high school dropout that is a killer programmer and has a portfolio of plenty of stuff to show related to crypto will find a lot of jobs vs some guy who got teached about crypto stuff in some university. So my advice is, if you can't afford these courses, don't go into debt for that, just learn stuff online and develop it and add it on your cv. I would also look who is teaching on these courses. They must be actual developers, not powerpointers.

Over the last decade, there have been many colleges and universities who have been caught approaching homeless people on the street and signing them up for educational government assistance (aka: "state funded student loans"). This isn't done out of the kindness of their heart, its done to prey upon homeless and saddle them with mountains of debt they could never repay, in order to profit off of additional taxpayer funding under circumstances where those enrolled are very unlikely to learn anything of value which helps them or gives them a better future. There have also been cases where students have enrolled in programs which cost in excess of $50,000 that teach no useful skills and were zero help in students obtaining a job in their chosen career path.

Unfortunately, "higher education" has often devolved into a money making scheme where zero information or skills of value can be learned, while students take on extreme levels of debt proportional to their future projections for wages.

It is possible this "blockchain business course" won't amount to much. It could be a liberal arts equivalent to learning about bitcoin and a complete waste of money. Its always nice to hear about bitcoin and crypto currencies gaining ground and being more widely supported but it might not be an exaggeration to think that maybe ICO scams have their equivalent in higher education, here.

This is excellent for the cryptocurrency world as it may hone students to develop further enhancements and future developments in order to improve the blockchain technology. Offering a degree with business related to cryptocurrency is one way to highlight and spread the knowledge of it to the world. We could say that this is a one-step progress and is a win-win situation among the society and bitcoin itself.
Though one problem that it might face mainly revolves around the government itself. The future of bitcoin is still unlikely and unreliable, as the government might impose rules/regulations prejudicial to its existence.

In the event that countries would declare bitcoin as a contraband, that degree might be useless and immaterial. They must have at least a contingency plan about the possible hindrances it might face.

I think it is good that Stanford and some of the other Ivy Leagueres are taking a leap forward in establishing the importance of cyrptocurrency.  I understand why they do not offer to teach the technological aspects of it.  I think cryptocurrency as whole is more disruptive than most people would like to admit.  Coding is not that difficult and most teenagers would be better at it because of their age and the flexible mindset that is not set to a fixed paradigm.  Cryptocurrency will change the dynamic of world's economy as we know it.  These colleges are taking steps in the right direction so that current and future business leaders are better prepared once the revolution starts. 

This is undirectly tell the universe that cryptocurrency future is more bright. Only how half of countries can accept it. This interesting is not make, their soul really been called.

It's a business school and Crypto has a lot that one can learn from when it comes to economics. It's more about teaching the students that aspect of Bitcoins. Not meant to sound mean, but you're looking at it through the eyes of really liking crypto. A little like a fanboy, where, "I find this aspect more important." It's a little like a school was teaching basketball defense, and someone goes, but why not 3 pointers. 3 pointers have become a larger part of the NBA.

I wonder what will happen to those courses once the cryptocurrency hype dies down. I can only imagine people with degrees in "cryptocurrency" would be hard-pressed for anything other than finance-related jobs. I wonder if that news article is even real in the first place. at least it gives a signal that cryptocurrency is known to people with the class. to ensure that i think half the world's population should use btc to meet their needs, so circulation of cryptos increases

I heard it some days before writing on this thread as the by this thread CNBC reports say that Harvard and Stanford and many more other universities and colleges are now studying Bitcoin courses on a large scale because the only thing and reason they are doing so is the high economic stability and to be the top number one rank of the global market.

Bitcoin helps grow the economy of a country by saving the cost of paper manufacturing and printing and cleaning of notes. It boosted up the economy by giving a huge profit after the jump of Bitcoin after some time.

They should also tackle about what blockchain can be used for, IMO they will be closer to being number one by doing so. I think they really need to study also the technical side of crypto in order for their students to be truly job ready deal with the crypto career for real in the future. Without knowledge of the tech, how can they use what they have studied and apply it? They would only end up as blabbermouths if they only learned it's economic aspects like what other economic experts do today.

I don't agree in the slightest. It is like saying that the functioning of economics, finance, etc., aka FIAT money, should be studied in a course of machine enjineering since the printers which print paper money require enjineers to be built. And since nowadays money is anyway in most cases just a number in a computer, economics should also be studies in the faculties of Informatics.

You're wrong. Crypto-currencies have more to do with economic laws than Fiat. The volatility of the cryptocurrency is the natural reaction of the currency to the changing economic situation. For this reason, the cryptocurrency economy is impossible crisis. Fiat keep in balance artificially so the crisis is a pattern Fiat economy.

I'm not as pessimistic towards it as other people. Crypto is already starting to gain relevance, so it's not surprise at all for me that it's starting to rack up interest in the academia. These schools in particular are very reputable, and they're so strict with their admissions that it's hard to accuse them of simply cash grabbing.

If people are interested as to what might be taught in such classes, Princeton has a free online course in Coursera (https://www.coursera.org/learn/cryptocurrency). The syllabus is available for viewing, and I've seen some materials relating to the course floating (illegally?) around the internet.

I agree with your statement that it's more likely going to be about the economic aspects rather than the technical side of bitcoin. Still though, it will be extremely beneficial if they are able to give an unbiased assessment of the breakdown of a decentralized payment system, such like bitcoin, brings to the table.


Yep. You don't need to take a full time course to become an expert at crypto or even start investing. But this university offering BTC just shows how BTC has started to go mainstream already.

Stanford university business full time cryptocurrency course is an easy and economic way to learn more about the technology and the tricks to use upon entering the market. This is like any other online course offered by edX or coursera and in my opinion; every one who thinks of going for this business should enroll in the courses. The more people know about the advantages of the technology, the more they invest and the more the prices will rise.

Wow. Just wow. I would have never even thought of this happening in a small business school 2 years ago, let alone in Stanford University.

I'm unsure of what the content is going to be about, but obviously it's going to be circling around economics. The more people that can fully understand the economic implications of bitcoin, the better. Bitcoin is really going mainstream in recent days with so many institutions starting to look at bitcoin seriously, including schools it seems.

I can’t imagine cryptocurrency will die, and if you look at this scenerario why it is being offered in a University is really interesting. I know this is just a preparation for a brighter future of cryptocurrency and if this is true for sure many people enrol on that course because they see a big potential on this kind of market.

Well bitcoin is a currency, and while bitcoin was created using code instead of mining the earth or by printing, the function of bitcoin is supposed to compete against those two forms of currency, so to me it makes sense that we analyzed it from that point of view, maybe bitcoin is never going to realize some of our wildest dreams of becoming the currency of the world, but I have no doubt that it's going to become relevant in the future and it is important that is studied from that point of view as well so we understand better the ramifications of a currency like bitcoin.

All of those schools and stuff are happening somewhere overboard. I didn't hear nothing like this inside of my country (Serbia). Well, that fact that crypto got involved into educational process means that crypto currencies and everything about it were admitted as payment tool or progressive technology which is entering our life to stay for long.

As you have said, these are reputed universities and colleges over the world and whatever they have devised for their students related syllabus and activities that comes after big research and industrial demand. A course regarding cryptocurrency. So nice. This is a good sign that bitcoin is starting to be widely accepted. However, it will be under the Economics/Business Department. So this means that the focus would be on its impacts on economy, its rise and fall in price, the factors affecting fluctuations, and probably how to prevent those negatively affecting bitcoin. There's nothing wrong with that at all. Its just that, like others opinion, it would be much better if it will also be under the technological aspect, like programming, coding, and other computer related field because first and foremost, that is the backbone of cryptocurrency. But with that said, it's still a good thing.

It's great that a university has now come up with a course on cryptocurrency. There was said to be other courses made available in various other universities. Some may think that the course is more suitable to be put in the computer studies department because it's more concerned on coding and programming. What other people and crypto-users alike don't realize is that there's also a business and economic aspect to cryptocurrencies. It's worthwhile to be discussed by the academe and hopefully this would lead to better studies on crypto and Bitcoin.

Its good to know that a big and famous university like Stanford is acknowledging cryptocurrency. Studying crypto in school aside from economics and business can help us be successful in our venture here. Maybe there are also schools in other countries who are offering same as Stanford.

Well its great, at least the government is kind of support blockchain and crypto, but in my opinion I think they should be more focus on the technical things, blockchain and btc still need a further development, when all infrastructure of crypto is finished, it wont be too difficult for people to used it for business, for now blockchain and crypto still can't be used for mass adoption, so technical development is more important

This is just a proof that cryptocurrency is here to stay. Some schools and universities are already offering courses about it so they wanted the people to know that there is a future with cryptourrencies and its role is important in the society. I hope it would be offered as well to other countries because people should be aware about it and not just base their judgments through mainstream media who are most likely bias about their news. If this course is offered then more parents would trust crypto because they would think that schools and universities would not offer it if it is just fraud or they cannot benefit from it.

The government is not doing this, it is a university, besides we do not need the support of the government, we do not need them to develop anything so you seem to have the wrong idea but governments they do not develop anything, they are not creators of wealth or technology they are consumers of wealth and technology, all those gadgets that you see that the government has it's not because they have developed those things, they just use the money that they tax you in order to pay private companies to create stuff for them.

I believe this became a possibility because of the online courses being offered by some online program of a school, which now I don't remember. Obviously cryptocurrency as a subject will be included as a elective class as a lot of students are interested in it , it is inevitable to have one. Just like how Korea have their own college for Pro Gaming athletes/students as a whole program. Universities right now are identifying what is being talk about and what is greatly affecting people's lives and Bitcoin and Blockchain Technology is one of them.

That is an amazing news. I am sure a lot budding managers would want to excel themselves in the most promising technology of today's world. If I were a manager, I would have definitely enrolled into the course. I have one question though, what would be the credibility of the professors since everyone is new to this world.

It is a good thing seeing cryptocurrency slowly getting implemented in many fields and going as far as teaching it in university as it is indeed a very interesting case to look at and research, but what i don't get is why it is being apart of an economic course, from what i know cryptocurrency is a highly unpredictable market and it does not move according to fixed principles like the stocks or the other currency market, so what they may be teaching today may not be valid in the future.

That is the part that will be thought but some discussion would touch the narrative part about how it works and the technology behind it but not coding. I have come to realize that all the part that make a difference are not taught in the classroom. The people that even shaped the world we live in even dropped out of school while some we don't even know if they go to school. Let me bring in the economic thing in between. You see everything was based upon blockchain and computers until bitcoin has been seen as a currency. When it is being seen as currency people transact with it in daily usage and even invest in it too. When people invest in it its obvious that it has some economic sentiments attached to it apart from the simple craze of technology. They want a good return on their money. Here is when economy comes in. It gets applied automatically where something related with the economic sentiments which is the want of the people with limited resources in present. That is why such university is teaching this course. They want to understand that how bitcoin and crypto could fit into the regular financial and economic scenario.

I haven't seen this in other popular media outlets. They are probably be teaching the economic side of cryptocurrency as the term itself refer to something of "economic study". Well, about the technical aspect, it is being taught in computer science or computer engineering course since it deals more on computing and cryptography in computers. Cryptocurrency is just one form of application that can be built with blockchain. Think of Blockchain as Windows OS, and think of Cryptocurrency as MS Office. In short, Blockchain is the operating system and Cryptocurrency such as bitcoin is a software application. And please note, not all in the CMC are cryptocurrency, some of them are tokens, just happened to have a monetary value. It's like potato, you can use the potato to have fries, but you can't buy the potato without spending something with monetary value, therefore potato has monetary value.

It was a very good thing to here that there are a lot of people who are interested on earning cryptocurrency today and because of that, there are even work from unversities regarding cryptocurrency.

Cambridge University have also acquired blockchain technology courses. It means that many college/universities all over the world are now accepting blockchain technology as part of their curriculum. I hope that my country will also integrate these courses in my field specially in business and financial management. It is good if the study in blockchain technology will become a minor subjecy in all colleges in the world.

I believe that most of the schools that teaches about bitcoin is in business school since the application of cryptocurrency is mostly in this section. While thr blockchain part is in thr IT schools becausw this is the technical part of cryptocurrency wherein the way this technology is programmed affects all of its dependents specially the platform itself.

Nevertheless, every aspect of blockchain application is necessary and none can actually be overlooked. It does not necessarily have to be the coding or scientific part of it. I hope that some of the universities in my country will do the same thing like what the Standford University did to the cryptocurrency, they accepted it and they made a course for the cryptocurrency which is a complete opportunity for the people who want to explore the cryptocurrency world and who want to take advantage of this growing industry.

And being a parents i am glad that this is now opened for our childrens future and given them opportunities to learn this technology formally and decently,since we must accept that in our part we just learned this personally though most of us had some friends told and teaching them this community,but with university now i am sure my childrens has a brighter tomorrow now..

Higher education finally decided to keep up with the times ;D. Now a lot of information, but it is scattered and sometimes unreliable. Perhaps universities of this level will be able to outsmart and theorize the blockchain

When top universities start to take cryptocurrencies seriously more investors will begin to take a liking to the entire cryptocurrency concept and digital currency movement. To date, not many people know about cryptocurrencies and even less know about how they are arranged, how they work and what a blockchain is. Stanford is not the first institution to include a course on cryptocurrency. There are quite a few more out there including it now into their catalogs. That is a good thing to read about the future technology early on then they can be an experts when the technology adopted by the common people.But the crypto currency courses were rarely available and in my countiy there is no uiversity offering such courses so every iniversity need to understand the importance of crypto in future and start teaching them to the people.

In the future we are going to see more things in the future and we will witness a lot of universities and school that will going to make a course about cryptocurrency so they can compete with the other school in terms of knowledge and education about cryptocurrency. This is the future and every school should take a step toward to it.

That may be true but it also depends on the succession of the cryptocurrencies in the days and months that'll go by. But if ever in the future it will be adapted, yes it would be a good thing to take a step forward in the future and let schools or universities give courses about economics and education about the crypto community.

But whe we are going to have that someday because already the crypto currencies getting into a part of the world economy so the younger generation need to get ready for that in early stages.Hopefully the technology behind the crypto currencies will be teach by the school itself then only all people will get to know about it.

My point is that the cryptocurrency courses are not necessary for the students. Everyone has laptops and internet. So students can get more knowledge about cryptocurrency on google than cryptocurrency knowledge in college.

It will be really helpful for those who are starting up new and still yet to know the very things that has to do with Bitcoin. As for me, if I’m to study anything that has to do with Bitcoin, it wouldn’t be the economic, but the coding aspect of it, cause that’s the side that seems to be much important to me than the other. Despite that, I still have to say that this is quite a good move and will help lots of starters that are interested in cryptocurrency.

Courses are also just a summary of the past years of the market. Every statement is just conjecture and the direction is safe. In fact, every market activity changes every day. That knowledge must also change over time. In my opinion, if you want the best track, we need to design a monitoring tool to help investors determine the market. There will be a chance to reach your goal.
