Title: How To Sell BTC With a Paper Wallet
Post by: RealT on November 13, 2013, 01:57:29 AM
If a person has a "paper wallet" how can they transfer BTC to another person.  I'm sure there are several ways, but what are they?

Import the private key on the paper wallet to a wallet on a PC thats on the internet .. then you can send coins from the corresponding Bitcoin address.

alternatively, you can physically give someone the paper wallet .. then they can spend all the coins held by that address =)

Import the private key and transfer to another person, or ask the other person to import the private key and transfer to his another address. In the latter case, before the other person transferred all coins to his own address, both the sender and the receiver can spend the money, and this can be messy so please do this face to face.

Download a client. Official bitcoin-qt may takes very long time to sync to the network. You can try multibit.

I believe mycelium for Android will do what you want. It has an option when you press menu for 'Cold Storage' which asks for the QR code of the private key.

It also allows you to export the private key which happens to be in QR format and easily fits in your pocket.

However, I've never used it and could be wrong.

Use blockchain.info as a last resort, or if you have an iPhone. :o

I use Blockchain with Google 2-FA to sweep private keys, it's a breeze

Google 2-FA requires a mobile phone right?

But I wouldn't store anything online, except for a hot wallet with 2-3 bitcoins max.. But I suspect 2-FA will not protect you if you recently used it to login, since it will only ask for 2-FA once every 10-20 minutes..

+1 for Mycelium for Android - I like it.

Also I'd recommend my Paper Wallet for android - it is offline client, so it is less convenient, but more secure.

This is how I would do it?

1. blockchain.info
2. Sweep key
3. Optional: send funds to new paper wallet

There are already good answers above. I agree blockchain.info wallets make it easy to sweep a private key, and this probably is the simplest way.

You can do it in the Satoshi/QT client by going to Help>Debug Window and then clicking the Console tab. From there you can do what you want using createrawtransaction, signrawtransaction and sendrawtransaction. I think this will work even without downloading the blockchain, but I've never tried. For createrawtransaction you will need to know the transaction id and output of the transaction* you used to load the address on your paper wallet, and the address you want to send the money to. For signrawtransaction you will need the private key.

*or "transactions" if there were more than one.
