Title: Litecoin Mining - Need a little bit of advice.
Post by: WowAFreeBeer on November 13, 2013, 03:24:43 PM
After getting some suggestions to mine litecoin, I got all of my computers set up to do it. My only question is, I have GTX Geoforce 650ti on my gaming pc. It has about 65khash/s for it. What should I set its difficultly level? Also I am using cudaminer, is there any performance settings I can tweak to squeeze a little more out of my graphics card without over doing it?

First thing: Don't use Nvidia GPUs for mining.

It would be nice if you went into more detail than just saying... dont do this or dont do that. I am actually trying to learn something here. So details and reasons are important.

Because they suck. Comparison page to show suckiness:

Here's what I use to use when I was mining with my NVidia cards.  I have now switched to AMD, because it's true, AMD GPU's work a lot better for hashing, but I still prefer NVidia for gaming.

cudaminer.exe -C 0 -i 0 -o http://netcodepool.org:8337 -O username.minername:password

Tweak it to the pool of your choice.  Or join the Netcode pool and all you have to change is your name/password

Thank you for a straightforward response. I know when I actually start constructing my rig that I will need to look into other hardware. However for the time being, this should suffice.

I do however have a AMD A6-4455M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics on my laptop. Anything I can do with that? I am currently using CGMiner on my laptop.

Again thanks for the help.

You can mine with NVIDIA just know that you are pushing them to their limits and quite possibly an early death for very little return. AMD GPU's are much better at it.

A single 7950 can push 600+Kh/s.

You do not want to do that at all. Not worth the risk to your laptop. (poor ventilation...)

Yea I dont want to do anything crazy. I am just getting my head around how to start mining, how to set up the programs. Which miners work better for which cards. I dont want to kill my graphics card for my gaming pc or laptop. I am looking into the purchase of a AMD 7950... is there a specific model that works best and is the most cost effective?

I don't know about the other pools, but on the pool I use netcodepool.org.  we have a forum site, and everyone lists what Video cards they are using, what settings they use, and the hash rates they are getting with those cards.  It might be worth your while joining if for nothing else to be able to read the forums.  There is enough info there to get you started anyways.

Nvidia cards basically don't give almost any noticeable hashrate. Use AMD for mining only.

Any thoughts on the AMD R5 and R7 series?

They are good, small upgrade compared to the current cards though.
If you can get the 7950s very cheap, go for them.
