Title: I've added audio to the English tuition project.
Post by: Jet Cash on April 16, 2018, 03:25:37 PM
What do you guys think? Is this a useful feature for new members hoping to improve their English?

Are you trying to teach those forum members that can't barely write proper grammars and makers of shitposts or suggesting an another feature to this forum?
Reading English words would really help to improve proficiency as well as listening to it.

This can help but many people still can't understand such accent like this, for example... as I play the audio, it only sounds like the man is just eating his words ( no offense but it really does sound like that ) and some words are not that clearly understandable as you hear them. MAYBE you should make a clearer sound for this. Like an actual english professor who only does the basic accent which is acceptable and understandable by everyone else here.

You sound like a very tired and or old imitation of a David Attenborough. Hey, take that as a compliment. You also sounded relatively calm.

I probably am tired. I got up early, and I've drunk too much coffee. It's also recorded in a McDonalds restaurant using a Blue Yeti set to cardioid, and recoded through Audacity. I haven't edited the track, as I wanted to get a few comments. I can play with the settings, and that may make it easier to understand if people are having problems.

How about trying to record a new one in a nice and quiet place (maybe your room or some other place that doesn't have any background noise). I guess playing and editing with the setting of audacity wouldn't make much any differ from the original record of yours (I'm also using it for editing music and for creating my reggaes and other mixed musics)

Thanks for signing up, and I've authorised your application. I've recently introduced email activation, so please let me know if there is a problem with this.

I seem to have quite a few people who are keen to help, and I am grateful for this. What I really need are the guys who are failing to receive merits because of bad English, and they seem reluctant to join.I don't know if they will be put off by too many tutors. I'm lucky in that a couple of Legendaries are helping, and I hope that this won't put off potential pupils. They won't be attacked because of their English, the whole point of the project is to help them improve. I'm not sure how I can convince them of this.

The other disadvantage is that they won't get any Bitcoin Talk merits for any posts there, and they wont be able to display signatures. I suspect this puts off quite a few applicants.

Did you check your spam folder and other folders?
Are you certain you put the right email address in also? Your account appears to have been created, can you not access the forum without confirming email?

Have you edited the recording in such a way that the 'spaces' (the quiet parts of the recording between words) has been removed by the editor? I don't think that someone can speak for such a long time without having a little stop to take a breath. This makes your voice a bit like an 'android' or like a text to speech software. Anyway, nice idea, don't let the critics stop you!

Say hello to taylor swift for me.  :D
There's no doubt podcast will help other members to enhance their English listening skills however the sound of your voice is hard to distinguish from background noises it might be better to record the variety of topics in much quieter.

If I may suggest, use a little lipstick on that pig of a signature and gussy her up!  ;)  You could use the words merit and bad English to convey what you really need or some other words you might prefer.  Someone with less than fluent English may not equate your signature/site with getting merit (honestly) here by improving their English!

"Not getting merit, English bad?  Learn how to improve your English and increase your chances of getting merit on Bitcointalk" - Be Fittotalk yada yada yada

Also what if you had a signature design thread where people could discuss and design different signatures for fit to talk.  Having input from users on how they found you and what were the keys to getting them to come might help figure out what might work in a signature.

I'm not suggesting sig campaign or anything but you have a sig and you should at least sexy it up a bit!  I know its a bit of a long shot but you might find other users eventually that would wear such a signature (hint hint wink wink  ;) )

Anyways good luck mate, I quite like the project and I hope it works out!

I'd really like to downplay signatures. Signaturesare important for a variety of reasons, and I think it is a shame that members prostitute themselves by promoting sites that the wouldn't dream of using. I might have one more drive for trainee recruitment, and then take fit to talk out of my signatures. I take your point about pretty signatures, but lipstick on a hairy male tends to generate the wrong traffic. :)

Thread titles and post content are far more important in my opinion. They are the things that generate healthy discussion and produce good advice.

None - I've got a bit of schoolboy French, and I've had a few American girlfriends, so I speak a bit of American as well. :)

I agree completely.

I think my analogy was terrible looking back on it.  I did not intend for it to come across as though your site was a pig needing lipstick and I do apologize if anyone read it that way.

What I meant was that your sig is plain, painfully plain that's all.  Also IMO your sig doesn't really convey the message that you want the guys who are not getting merit because of bad English.  Perhaps it's not a reluctance to join but people don't understand what you want/offer?

Good and bad traffic is all in the same place and by alienating bad traffic you also risk alienating good traffic IMO.

Anyways I hope I didn't offend it wasn't my intentions I like the project!  :)  I don't want to derail your thread with OT sig stuff.

If you consider this post OT and not appropriate for this thread LMK I'll gladly delete it!

I think he sounds great--a man who's lived life, found it to be wanting, and is trying something completely new.  I, Myself, could do without the noisiness of a packed restaurant in the background, but the man's got to do what he has to for wi-fi.

The main problem is whether people are going to be motivated enough to use Jet Cash's site--and I think they should if they want to embark on a successful "career" on bitcointalk.  No one should make this forum their career, but we all know it's happening, and these people at least should know how to speak their adopted language well enough to post good material.

Deep in my heart I suspect a lot of campaigners are lazy, as evidenced by the fact that they're choosing to support families by posting garbage on a discussion forum.  They could write a lot better and a lot more than they currently are, but they choose to do the minimum most of the time, and they're the ones who won't take up a very generous offer like Jet Cash has made.

No offence taken, and thank you for not pointing out that I hadn't proof read my post.

I do quite a bit of playing and experimenting with signatures, and a few other things. I was the guy who invented the 'splinkie' that is a spammed link smilie. You host an image of a standard smilie, and add it to your post. Nobody realises that you are collecting data on your post viewers. I've even done this with a dot in the middle of a paragraph.

I've just started to put together a promo page - The nine circles of merit hell (https://satansslave.com/bitcointalk-merit) , and this is based on the Divine comedy by Dante. I'll add the pages for the nine circles over the next couple of days. It's not a lot of work, and it's just a bit of fun really. Although the bounty hunters might not like being called "Satan's Slaves" :)

Well thanks for the kind words.

I'm fairly new to audio productions, and that recording was something off the cuff, and unedited. I can record anywhere really - by the lake or on the beach. McDonalds was a bit of an experiment. Although it is a cardioid microphone,  it picks up sound reflections from the wall, and resonance from the table. I can block the table with a 1" wooden chopping board and a folded towel. The walls are a different issue. I toyed with the idea of chucking a towel over my head, and making the recording underneath, but I didn't want people to think I was peculiar. :)

I really hoped that the backgroud music would be fairly soft, and would enhance the recording, but I guess I need to be a bit more selective.
