Title: Bitcointalk = Altcoin Forum?
Post by: escrow.ms on April 16, 2018, 07:57:22 PM
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=unread

Everytime I click "Show Unread posts since last visit" All I see is altcoin annoucements or ICO/Bounty threads.

This needs to stop, because it's affecting everyone's ability to see bitcoin related discussions and it's highly annoying to see a new ICO popping up everyhour/everyday.

Personally I think theymos should exclude altcoin related forums from appearing on "unread posts" function.

Those who are indulged in altcoins only should add those topics in their watch list.

I agree, this button is useless to me. I created a personal watchlist with some boards i think are better.

I think that on bitcoin boards (technical, support, beginners, etc) any altcoin discussion should be forbidden also.

Yes i agree the forum is an altcoin forum,  i think if we   remove the altcoin section in local board then it will be good for
 all bitcoiners.

Just ignore those boards (easy fix):

Profile > Under "Modify Profile" (left part of the screen), look for the last option on the list ("Ignore Boards Preferences") > Check those boards > Click "change profile".

I think it's better to think of Bitcointalk = cryptocurrency forum. It just so happens that for the longest time, cryptocurrency was synonymous with Bitcoin. That is clearly no longer the case, and it seems silly to me to limit the scope of discussion just because we have to strictly adhere to the domain name's suggested topic.

I don't see why you're so surprised, OP. In the beginning there was only bitcoin. But now we have over 300 different cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin is great, but it's obvious that the amount of posts created about bitcoin simply can't outnumber the plethora of posts for each and every one of the new and old alts out there.

It's just numbers.

That said, if people want more BTC threads and posts, just post more. And yeah, if the altcoin posts are annoying you -- it's time to ignore those boards.

Just ignore those boards (easy fix):
I don't want to ignore them, for several reasons. But they make "unread posts" useless. Up to a year ago I used that to find interesting threads. Now I can't do that anymore.

SFR10 has all the answers to your problem. Once you've done that you never need to set foot or see anything posted from the hell that is the alt coin section ever again.

Just ignore those boards (easy fix):

Why not? You can't have it both ways. You can ignore those boards so they stop showing up in the unread posts but you can still manually go into the boards for whatever reason.

Don't forget to add Local Boards as well. I have tried (for the sake of curiosity) blocking only the Altcoin Cryproturrencies sections (including all of its child boards) and after applying it I tried to visit the "Show unread posts since last visit." and it still showed translated ANN threads of ICO in different local boards.  After checking all (which is a lot) Local Boards voilą all the threads in the "Recent Unread Topics" are almost Bitcoin related.

I agree, even if our forum name is named after Bitcoin, I still see the Altcoin section in the forum very active as a lot of people are searching for the "next Bitcoin" also a lot of them are participating bounties and air drops. In my own opinion Bitcointalk as a forum does not need to limit itself to purely topics involving BTC as other altcoins play an important role in the whole crypto market in general.

I agree to this. This is a strong indication of the fact that how the interests of people are changing with time and alt coins are getting more popular. I am also concerned about those fraud projects popping up every day as some new investors might get affected by them.

But there are coins that are giving better returns in comparison to bitcoins. Most of the people are concerned about returns only and they are not loyal to any coin, even if it is the bitcoin with which all this crypto started.

Use ignore for people and boards when you use your main account. Create an alt without the ignore for the odd times you want to visit the  ignored boards.

That's one of the reasons I created Talk Merit.

To ignore them is useful, I agree, but if you want to read about altcoin you will need to enter manually.
The problem with the alt section is not, under my perspective, the alt itself (for me it is interesting to discuss altcoin), but the misuse of the "altcoin section" and the "altcoin announcements" one, which seems to be the same. I put on ignore the "altcoin announcements" section, due to the number of announcements which I don't like to read, but now the complete altcoin section seems to be dedicated to useless new icos.
I think the necessary action is to move all these announcements into the "altcoin announcements" in order to maintain clean the "altcoin discussion" section.

I've found the watchlist to be the most useful tool for the issues you're experiencing.

This is different than using show unread posts since your last visit or showing new replies to your posts because you control the content that appears. You can eliminate certain topics/boards from your watchlist and you can still track new threads on the board of your choice, so you wouldn't need to ignore any specific boards to eliminate the bounty updates.

Please see this post for more information on the benefits and how to use the watchlist.  (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=3318707.0)

It's not that alts are more popular.. it's just that bitcoin is 1 coin. And alts are 100s. Bitcoin is still an interest, but now it's competing with the thousands of fans in 100s of coins.

And most alts are unique, so each alt has a unique tech to bring to the table. Just reading up on their tech and updates on their tech is enough to generate more threads and posts than bitcoin news. And that's why it's not really possible for bitcoin to "win out" on bitcointalk anymore. It's not about popularity, it's just that the cumulative alt news just drowns out any bitcoin-related posts.

You right, this forum full of Altcoin and ICO/Bounty. Maybe that's because many people here just want to join Bounty program.

Maybe we must rename this forum to Altcointalk or Bountytalk  ;D
