Title: Newbie Question about sending bitcoins
Post by: vandeam on November 14, 2013, 10:51:55 AM
lets say i'm sending someone 0.001 bitcoins

lets say this is my pub key 1dfsdf34tgdg4....
and the transaction that i see is 2 outputs ..

1 for the adress i was sending the 0.001 bitcoins
and second output if for lets say 1.985... bitcoins

my question is the second transaction is sent to some unknown adress.

and my wallet is left with 1 bitcoin (i had total of 3 bitcoins)

where did the 1.985 bitcoins went ??!

how can i get them back ?

it means if i want to restore my account i will only be left with 1 bitcoins ? because the rest (1.985) bitcoins is on some other adress that i dont know the private key

it mean i lost them ?

i dont quite understand yet the outputs of each transactions and how the random adress is generated and whats the private key of it.

Thanks

I think you unfortunaly lost the 1.9... btc.

Which software do you have used to do the transaction?

Maybe you can check the log of transactions there.

Its painful to hear this but your BTC have been stolen. Your system got hacked and the hacker sent the bitcoins to his wallet address. Bitcoin transactions are anonymous so you cant trace the person even if police gets involved.

You description is pretty incomplete - impossible to know what actually happened.
You describe your problem with a lot of "let's" - is this a gedankenexperiment or something that actually happened?

First of all, understand how bitcoin sending and change works.
If you send an amount to someone, your wallet needs to construct a transaction in which one or more outputs from transactions sent to you are combined to yield that amount or a bit more. If the sum exceeds the amount you want to send (+fees if applicable), the residue is sent to a newly generated address. Your wallet stores the key to that address, so the change should be visible as spendable amount.

If you don't see the change, there are a number of things that could possibly have gone wrong:
- you're somehow looking in the wrong place, everything is ok - this can happen to newbies...
- your software has some error - pretty unlikely
- you used your software in some weird way - can happen to newbies but should not result in loss of coins
- you've got a trojan on your computer which could do a number of things to steal bitcoins

Without a proper description what you *really* did, what client/wallet you used, what the transaction ID is etc. nobody can tell you much more than "it might have been...", which does not really help that much.

Hello OnkelPaul

Thanks for the help..
i'm relieved i found the "Change" adresses and their private keys.
so i didn't lose the funds they are just sitting on new adresses which i have found.

Thanks!
