Title: NEW! Bitcoin Smartphone Coming Soon
Post by: Marko Vidrih on April 17, 2018, 02:30:05 PM
The start-up Sirin and the electronics giant Foxconn are planning a smartphone with a built-in digital wallet. This should be much easier - but the mobile phone will not be cheap.

Virtual money like Bitcoin and the smartphone - this is not a real love, on the contrary. Recently, there have been increasing warnings that cybercriminals are not only attacking PCs to illegally dig cryptocurrencies, but also mobile phones. Now a start-up and a large contract manufacturer want to make it clear to the consumer that the combination of Bitcoin and smartphone can also have their good and safe sides.

The Swiss-Israel company Sirin Labs and the Taiwanese electronics giant Foxconn, which among other things manufactures iPhones for Apple, are planning the first smartphone with blockchain technology. So with the technology that forms the basis of all virtual currencies. Thus, the crypto will finally mass market suitable, says Sirin founder and co-CEO Moshe Hogeg. The device, jointly developed by Sirin and Foxconn called Finney is said to facilitate transactions with digital money and provide protection against hacker attacks.

Use physical switches to access the wallet
The two companies are counting on the fact that there are currently millions of Bitcoin owners, but only a few use Bitcoin for day-to-day business. The complicated technology makes this unattractive. To prevent theft, Bitcoin payers must keep their assets on special memory sticks until needed. Then remember to remember complicated usernames and passwords that can be many characters long. An uncomfortable thing that gets in the way of a really big spread. "No chance my mother will find out how to use Bitcoin. And my mother is smart, "says Sirin boss Hogeg.

MORE ON THE SUBJECT
With a smartphone that basically everyone can carry in their pocket, everything should be much easier. With the Blockchain mobile phone, for example, users should be able to shop on crypto-friendly websites. This promises a high level of security. Finney devices - under this brand, smartphones and PCs are planned - are the first to rely on the applicable as uncrackable Blockchain Technik. They run under the widespread mobile operating system Android, in conjunction with special cybersecurity technologies. With the help of its own physical switch, the owners should be able to cut off online access to the built-in digital purse ("wallet") and thus hinder hacker attacks. This so-called "cold wallet" is considered safer than a "hot wallet" that can be accessed anytime via the internet.

Competitors are also involved
Sirin has already raised hundreds of millions of dollars in project development from investors:  158 million USD in December, and another 70 million USD recently. The Bitcoin smartphone is expected to hit the market in October 2018. First, it wants to market it through its own stores, later on via telecommunications companies. The device is not cheap. Initially,  999 USD are targeted; Later, license agreements with other cell phone producers should push this price down to 200 USD. Among other things, Sirin is in talks with Huawei.

Meanwhile, others have discovered the charm of a blockchain phone - competitors like Zippie and Bitvault. Nevertheless, analysts rate the prospects of success quite ambiguous. On the one hand, the use of Bitcoin is still very limited, on the other hand, there is a danger of constantly carrying its virtual money with it. Criminals could kidnap Finney owners and forcibly gain access to the virtual wallets, so the fear.

Nice idea, but I don't really catch the point...
I do have an android phone now, and I can use Mycelium on it, which is a bitcoin wallet. It can be used as a hot wallet (storing a small amount of bitcoin in that wallet) and as a cold wallet as well, because I can attach a Trezor or a Ledger Nano S to the android phone and Mycelium can handle both hardware (cold) wallets.
So it's already possible to do all these things which is written in the article. My only idea is that they don't really want to use bitcoin as the currency on the blockchain, but they want to set up their own currency and 'force' people to use it instead of bitcoin, which is a really smart move from them.
I'm interested in the outcome of this...

It is Taiwan manufacture Foxconn, i found similar news from cnn Electronics Giant Foxconn Signs on to Manufacture $1000 Blockchain Phone (https://www.ccn.com/electronics-giant-foxconn-signs-on-to-manufacture-1000-blockchain-phone)
In my view, the Smartphone will be built into it already integrated wallet in the form of Bitcoin and Altcoin, in the future the tokens / coins in the wallet can be used for functional transactions in various merchant partners. The idea is good '‘It will let owners shop on crypto friendly sites like Overstock.com and Expedia, converting cash into specialized tokens if needed,’ an excerpt from the report read. ‘Users may also activate their phone’s Wi-Fi while commuting and get paid in tokens by fellow bus riders looking for access to a wireless network.’' , but i think it need big co-operation with many company to makes this happen.

it is a good idea it would be like a portable ledger with a much more diverse functions and utilities with security measure for our cryptocurrencies. I would love to have one since I am always on the go and I think it would be very useful for me plus this smart phone idea will surely improve bitcoin's accessibility and acceptability to more people across the globe.

I'm not a fan of specialized devices like these. They basically announce you own bitcoins. I only use generalized hardware because of supply-chain attacks -- and for discretion.

Keep in mind, these kinds of specialized hardwares (like hardware wallets) generally involve closed-source code and centrally-updated firmware. That's a security hole. The physical switch sounds like a novel way to imitate an air-gap, but it's not what I would consider cold storage.

Not a fan of Foxconn, either....

I'm sceptical and I think that this project will fail. Do they really think that people will buy this phone just because it has Bitcoin wallet integrated, instead of iPhone or Samsung devices. Especially when price of this coin will be $1000 which is really expensive. And basically, smartphones aren't best place to keep BTC, so I don't that specialized Bitcoin phone are needed. Personally, I have installed Bitcoin wallet on my Android phone where I keep small amount of BTC and I don't need for something more fancy.

Definitely not a gadget for me with this price range. I tend to abuse my phones since I'm working a lot and spending a lot of time outside, so I never buy anything expensive. Also, I don't want to worry with it getting stolen. My phones are always in the <300 USD price range so that I'm not worried if they get a little wet or covered in dust. a 1000 USD phone would be a pain to use. I like the idea though.

The price will surely exceed Iphone X, and of course the owner of the smartphone must take care of his phone with more caution again, if the smartphone is stolen, then it could be all the assets owned by the owner will disappear as well.

...wait so it's not necessarily a Bitcoin smartphone, it's a blockchain smartphone? How exactly would that be better than a regular smartphone? It looks like they basically threw in the blockchain aspect to attract buyers with no real improvement in other areas. I also fail to see why it would be more secure and better suited for crypto activities...unless it hosts its own Bitcoin blockchain? Even then I find the concept to be rather iffy. It's also going to be online a lot, so I'm not sure whether I want to trust it.

But yeah, to each his own I guess. I personally don't engage in crypto activities with my smartphone because I feel like PCs are much more secure (being much more customizable), and I don't think a mobile device fine tuned for crypto is likely to change that.

There is a difference between safety and security.
Regarding crashes, stolen phone, etc. this is a reason for the PC being safer to use.
But i would not call a PC more secure than a mobile.

Android is utilizing a linux kernel. With proper settings a mobile can be just as secured (and even more secure) than a windows pc.
The security mostly depends on the hardware/software used and on the configuration.

My biggest issue with this that currently smartphones are being used by government agencies to spy on their people (if you think I'm smoking my socks then watch the Snowden movie)

I think using a blockchain based mobile phone to conduct crypto transactions might be giving away too much information to the government. I don't trust them, I believe the biggest criminals are not the ones sitting in Jail nor are they they ones standing trial. The biggest criminals  wear suits and tie's and are sitting in parliaments and corporations around the world.

I'm actually considering getting a DUMB Phone.. the dumber the better..  Smart user with a dumbphone is better than a smartphone with a dumb user :)

Honestly I wouldn't keep my bitcoins on a phone wallet since my phone can be stolen without even knowing it. On the other hand thiefs can follow the persons that bought a phone and steale it from him. That's not the only reason. I also dont see why you wouldn't want to keep your bitcoins on a mobile hardware. You can keep you bitcoins into a wallet that can be downloanded on any android or ios smartphone.

Very good idea. The more people who use blockchain technology to transact, the more people recognize and curious about blockchain technology. However, it should also be accompanied by government support in their respective countries because if a country does not accept blockchain technology then it is likely that citizens in that country will not be able to enjoy or get the smartphone based on the blockchain technology they created.

Despite the skepticism being shown regarding the potential security and safety aspect for such a device, I think this is a pioneering step and should be welcomed.

We are not talking about people keeping 100 BTC in these devices. I see it more as an easily accessible method of using BTC for transactions where the user want anonymity. This is going to be a first of it's kind model so will be expensive. From the article, it looks like it'll have a physical switch to switch from cold-wallet mode to hot-wallet mode. You could probably load the cold wallet part with some BTC, Transfer some of this amount towards the hot-wallet part and then flip the switch to go online.

This'll all be pretty accessible and remove the usage barrier for normal populations. Though the security will need to be thoroughly tested openly by the community to check for any attack vectors. This can be beneficial for adoption.

I don't see much business feasibility of this new blockchain phone that comes with a built-in wallet. I read this news earlier on a different blog where the price of this smartphone is mentioned as $1000/unit. If they want to spread blockchain technology for mass usage, $1000/unit price is not really a intelligent move. Because I can use a cold wallet from my $300 smartphone through ledger Nano S or Trezor. Why would a person spend $700 extra for the functionality which is already available in the market at a very cheaper cost.

Also personally, I am not willing to keep my bitcoin cold wallet in my smartphone. Because smartphone devices are very soft targets for the thieves, especially those who commute daily in public transport. The smartphone may be good for portraying new technology, but it is far from aiding the mass adoption of blockchain technology. Unless, the price comes down to an optimum level like $300-$500.

Technology moves and evolves much faster now but the first mobile phones were pretty much a luxury item and very expensive. Once adoption grows or the product proves to have a considerable market, the price will surely come down with scale.

I think it can serve the purpose of actually being an ubiquitous wallet where you keep small amounts that you don't mind being mugged, if it comes to that, lol.. Like we keep our savings and salaries in the bank and only a small part in wallets

Sirin and Foxconn, jointly launched by the company, could create a milestone in the payment of bitcoin. We all know that there are billions of smartphone users in North America and Asia, and most of them are young people. In my country, there is no need to bring cash with you on every one in my country. Local payment, I think the combination of smart phone and bitcoin will be an explosive opportunity for the industry of digital money.

Nice project but I don't know if this will be a big thing, first we still don't know how strong is the security of the software/wallet that is built-in on that smartphone, there might still be some bugs. Next is if it is a specialized device for Bitcoin or cryptocurrency, then if some bad people saw you, using that smartphone, it can be threat to the owner, this means that this device cannot be safely used in public. So I would still go for hardware wallets like trezor or ledger, proven that it is secured and definitely cheaper than this smartphone that is worth $1000 yet hasn't proved that it is safe to use.

I guess, I don't need this brandnew phone if in mycellium can do what it can do also. For me, android phone is just for storing value and asset.

People will object if the products of the two companies are unreachable and will keep people going to use the wallets they can have for free without paying any expense so they are ready with all the risks when using the wallet. For me, Finney will only be owned by the rich only because they have the money to get the product of the two companies whose security is much better than the wallet that was obtained for free.

iPhone is not a company, it is a product. Apple designs and manufactures iPhones and it doesn't seem like they are interested in making their devices more appealing to cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Of course there are many other secure ways to store bitcoins but people prefer to choose the most convenient ones which is not good.

bitcoin wallet on a smartphone is totally different from a bitcoin smart phone because bitcoin smartphone are a new kind of phone model that runs on a crypto os or bitcoin os ( that is also a new operating system that maybe realesed on the future )

If that is poasible to happen , i think that can be a good hit  because millenials will surely try this kind of phones .

these phones are also optimized for crypto usage which means they has a higher security in terms of storing your coins .

As we all know, everyone will have a smartphone at this time, they will need a smartphone for their daily life. We'll wait for the smartphone, and everyone is ready to get to know cryptocurrency.

I agree with you mate. I think online wallets are okay, what if your phones stolen or damaged? How are they going to back that up when your wallet is the phone itself? If they have a backup that means they have to create another storage for that? I think it is not necessary to use your mobile phone as an alternative wallet.

I wouldn’t buy it. I have my phone with everything I need and I don’t want one more phone to take with me.  And I am skeptic whether it can be so good as Samsung or Iphone. From one hand It sounds nice, but once more, I wouldn’t buy it even if it will be cheap.

To make technology great again, we need to bring back the simplicity of it that we lost with smartphones. So I'd rather buy wireless hardware credit-card sized Bitcoin wallet that works almost everywhere instead of this phone.

They forgot to make Bitcoin wallet to new Nokia 3310. But this hardware wallet will be much better.

I'm not sure this is safe. It is better to keep money in a cold wallet  than in a smartphone. And if there is a need, you can pay off the application.

With a smartphone that basically everyone can carry in their pocket, everything should be much easier. They run under the widespread mobile operating system Android, in conjunction with special cybersecurity technologies. On the one hand, the use of Bitcoin is still very limited, on the other hand, there is a danger of constantly carrying its virtual money with it. Criminals could kidnap Finney owners and forcibly gain access to the virtual wallets, so the fear.

It is a good idea if you ask me. But, I doubt that this smartphone will become famous since not all people believes in cryptocurrency. Nonetheless, if they can really merge the blockchain technogy into a phone, it means that we are really arriving the future.

It will not be very successful as there are already safer options to store bitcoins. If a company like iPhone is involved, then this is something different.

iPhone is not a company, it is a product. Apple designs and manufactures iPhones and it doesn't seem like they are interested in making their devices more appealing to cryptocurrency enthusiasts. Of course there are many other secure ways to store bitcoins but people prefer to choose the most convenient ones which is not good.

Wether apple will participate or not the most important thing is the new innovations that will involve bitcoin, for now I think no popular companies are expressing interests for bitcoin, hope soon there will be more interested companies.

Any sites about this that we can read? I ca't just believe this with just your post and no supporting sites, articles and statements but I think that will be big for certain investors since a smartphone and a digital wallet in one is a great thing. The only problems is that there are a lot of people that lose their phones, in fact I've read this article last month and it is really surprising that a lot of people lose their phones and this is their massive calculations about it.

You can also read this one since we are talking about Smartphones now. If this technology will be about smartphones and digital wallet, they should be able to be shockproof since most of the users of smartphones tends to broke their phones maybe from falling and forgetting it.

Nice Initiative
HTC has also launched somewhat similar smartphone, cost of this phone is somewhat similat to the new iphoneXR.
If they can reduce the cost then I am sure this new smartphone will be a hit.
Since, Hot wallet are risky to store cryptos, I am not sure whether the wallet will be the USP for Blockchain based smartphone.

Anyways we need to wait till the actual product is launched.

Bitcoin in itself is a very smart technology, a decade ago on the day of its introduction to people it was considered totally as alien technology because of its potential and fate it bears but then with time it has proved its worth and potential and has overcome all the obstacles and criticism in its path and now on the top of all the crypto ranking and then companies started investing into bitcoin and I heard the news that Samsung smartphones might be come with bitcoin technology and then they will be the most secure smartphones ever because of bitcoin technology and I think this collaboration of Samsung and bitcoin is wise and profitable for all of us.

Recently I read the news that HTC has invented a phone based on blockchain. This smartphone can be used as a wallet and will also support all applications on the blockchain. This is great.

even android and ios phones can always support blockchain based apps and crypto related apps like wallets or exchangers so buying it wont be any benficial to and it may only cost more expensive compared to any regular phones nowadays  since it came from a high end manufacturer which is htc  .

yet this phone isnt new because even on the past years i already heard a blockchain based phones but that is from a different company , that wasnt succesful at all and it doesnt create any hype after they release it . atleast these kind of idea's can surely help the promotion of bitcoin and cryptocurrency

It's not new news about smartphones that use the blockchain, it's good if it runs well and safely. Surely many investors use their smartphones for fast transactions. This is a development of blockchain technology that can be enjoyed by all people.

This is a another big challenge to really put this things into actual usage. We know more often and I think you would agree that mobile phones are also the common device that will be main target of hacking as well. So that keeping things like bitcoin wallet and keys in a phone would be very unsafe. We could hear more often about news where mobile phones are being stolen and important data are stolen. So the next big question is how can a transaction be really safe so that if mobile phones are stolen nobody will ever be able to retrieved the data from it. This a really big challenge to the developers.

This is a very welcome development and will increase the awareness and exposure to the use of Bitcoin. The mainstream society will come to accept the use of crypto currencies if we have innovative projects that is accepted

Encrypted currency or BTC smartphones are a marketing strategy for mobile phone manufacturers to promote mobile phones!
BTC's smartphone only needs you to download some apps to become the encrypted mobile phone selected by the mobile phone manufacturer!

As far as I know, HTC has already created its first blockchain-smartphone EXODUS. In any case, in December 2018, it should be on sale. I do not know whether it will perform the same functions and whether it will be convenient, but Sirin is not unique in this. In addition, several other companies are working on the same in parallel. The only question is which of these smartphones will be most convenient for users and whether it will be in general in demand in the current couple of years.

I believe that any development is connected at least somehow with cryptocurrency - it will only be useful for the community. So we look forward to being able to show us))

Such a phone would need to have mission impossible type security. I'm talking about iris scanners, palm print recognition, hardware ledger wallet support, and more!

This phone already exists. This is incredible, but it proves that bitcoin is more and more relevant,it is increasingly used, otherwise the phone on the blockchain would not have been created. I hope as many companies as possible will pick up this idea and release more similar smartphones.

Why is it needed? I personally would never have bought such a smartphone and never kept my BTC coins on it. For this, there is a Trezor or other reliable wallets.  ???

I think this is a very good progress from the development of BItcoin, so that with the existence of a Smartphone with the theme Bitcoin and Blockchain it will make Bitcoin more known to the world public. So that the price of bitcoin will continue to be expensive with a lot of good news coming to lift the price of Bitcoin.

The idea is great and innovative. But it will just place a big sign above each user's head like, "I'm a Bitcoin owner!" or "I have Bitcoins!". This would go against what anonymity means and that's not good. I'd rather be an unknown user than a target. But I'm quite intrigued and will check on the development.

I like the idea of mobile phones that will work using the blockchain. The competition among such projects is very good. I think this will lead to a quality product.

Very good idea. The more people who use blockchain technology to transact, the more people recognize and curious about blockchain technology. However, it should also be accompanied by government support in their respective countries because if a country does not accept blockchain technology then it is likely that citizens in that country will not be able to enjoy or get the smartphone based on the blockchain technology they created.
yes good and very happy i if bitcoin is used in technology such as smartphones or other media and can make it easier to access this good bitcoin hopefully it will be fast and disseminated

I heard that Samsung is developing a new technology but in General sense I do not see much as there are simply wallets which can be installed on your smartphone.

1.FINNEY™         : https://sirinlabs.com/
2.HTC EXODUS 1 : https://www.htcexodus.com/us/
3.XPhone            : https://medium.com/pundix/making-the-worlds-first-blockchain-phone-call-66784b5436ee

Who's next?

they come with a variety of different systems, but I feel the price is too expensive with specifications that are not really on par with conventional flagship smartphones. they only add different OS from Android and are intended specifically for crypto users.

If this is the beginning, all specs need to be adapted to smartphones on the market, unless they are very confident with the blockchain system and a high level of security as something superior.

I have mixed feelings about this. It sounds like a good idea on paper having a phone specifically designed for crypto. But don’t we have too many gadgets already? And won’t that open the gateway for more malware and hacking opportunities?
