I think we are starting to see most move away from the 'bad' alt currencies now people realise their price is not going to follow Bitcoins path, and they are instead moving into Bitcoin, Peercoin and Litecoin. This is a common misconception about Peercoin. There is an exact finite amount. It's 2 billion. But that doesn't matter, it will never hit even 1/10th of that in our lifetime. Peercoin already has a lower inflation rate that Bitcoin. Within a few years the coins created by mining will be almost non-existent and most coins will come from proof of stake which will be about a 1% increase yearly. It is an improved version of Bitcoin. I do not think that it will overtake bitcoin either. But, I believe it can be a stable and good alternative like Litecoin. I'm concentrating on Peercoin and eMunie myself (I got in and out of XRP before and made 400% but I'm sticking to these 2 for the long haul).
