Title: Initial sMerit for every rank?
Post by: TheBeardedBaby on April 18, 2018, 07:20:11 AM
I'm making a list of the initial smerit for every rank, but the search did't help much.
Looking for the Full Member, Sr.member and Hero member.
I have found some numbers but I need confirmation to be sure. This info is nowhere to be found.
This is what I have so far

While specific formula is not given, theymos wrote that the initial sMerit is not solely determined by rank, but determined by rank and activity points obtained in the last year.
The spendable amount was calculated based on your current rank and the number of activity points you earned in the last year. A Legendary member who hasn't posted in the last year would still be Legendary, but would not have any spendable merit.
I know a Sr. Member who had 26 initial sMerit when the merit system was introduced, but it fluctuates for each user.

sncc is correct. I only had 22 as a Sr. Member because I was not active for the whole of last year. theymos hasn't made the data public so nobody knows exactly how many sMerit anyone else received.

I see, the Sr. Member I mentioned registered here on March last year.  He posted 583 posts last year and must have earned most of the Activity, so I assume 26 is more or less close to the upper bound for Sr. Member.

Instead, the total number of initial sMerit is disclosed as about 600k by the theymos' reply below:

https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit;stats=topsend

In less than a day we already sent more sMerits (11k+) than sources will gain in a month (~8k). Anyone knows how many sMerits have been distributed to existing members?

About 600k.

Then I know now. Thank you. I'll lock this thread.

While specific formula is not given, theymos wrote that the initial sMerit is not solely determined by rank, but determined by rank and activity points obtained in the last year.

The exact formula was:

Code:
yearActivity = activity in the last ~year, max 378
freeMerit = the merit (not sMerit) you started with
modifier =
  0.1 if member
  0.2 if full member
  0.25 if sr member
  0.35 if hero
  0.4 if legendary

return (yearActivity/378) * modifier * freeMerit

So the most you could get is if you were a Legendary who maxed out your activity points in the last year, in which case you would get 1 * 0.4 * 1000 = 400 sMerit.

Note that I later made an adjustment giving 500 extra merit to some hero members, but no extra sMerit was given here.

I'll probably publish a dump of the initial sMerit at some point.

Thank you, theymos. I unlock this thread because I think more people should be aware of it.
I think I'll keep it open for now.

So the most you could get is if you were a Legendary who maxed out your activity points in the last year, in which case you would get 1 * 0.4 * 1000 = 400 sMerit.
Can you tell me why I started with 200 sMerit? Based on this, I would have expected 400.

My guess is it's based on the Hero Merit amount (500) when my Activity was <1030, even though my rank was Legendary already. Is that correct?

How can I see my sMerit? In this table, I can't see the Smerit for the full member. The merit system is very good but it is very tough to earn actually. That's why I need to know if I have sMerit then I can help others to rank up their Account

Good to know... I think there are quite a few ready to use that information for their stats. Specifically, it will enable us to determine the amount of sMerit in circulation, and calculate ranking stats once the merit system was set in motion.

To check my sMerit I usually open my profile /or any other profile/ and click on the merit link.
There is your /or any other/ merit history, but above the statistics you can see this :
Code:
Bitcoin Forum > Merit > Merit summary for iasenko

Clicking on the > Merit> will take you to your current sMerit statistics ;)

Maybe there are other (easier) ways, but this works for me.

Using the URL with the user ID deleted that my browser remembers https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit
is just another way of getting to the same place.

I had the same. I'd also be interested in knowing why.

So for jr. members like me our initial smerit is 0, so sad but i'm not worried. I will do by best to create a constructive post or good quality post like you guys. Since i check the merit I already see that there are lots of generous merit senders, those senders are also helping this community stay good and lessens the spammer. I have a question in mind. Are those who had enough merit and member rank and above could recieve initial smerit?
Asking question is not bad since you can gain information rather than answering other's question that you don't have enough answers or less knowledge about it.

These are typical words written by people who just parrot what they read on bitcointalk, and it's why most posts sound alike--poorly written and vapid.  It also would not surprise me if you had alt accounts.  You're going to really need to learn some new words and express thoughts that are much different than this if you want to earn merits.

If you're making a widget that is no different than a million other widgets on the market, you don't stand much of a chance to make money.  That's the best analogy I can give you for the situation you're facing.

Thanks OP for unlocking the thread, I wanted to quote the formula.

How can I see my sMerit?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?action=merit
Clicking on the > Merit> will take you to your current sMerit statistics ;)

It would be good if theymos could implement an easier way to check sMerit balance -- on January I suggested one way (https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=2844273.msg29179591), which I believe the simplest to implement and quote below.  Of course one can check sMerit balance in the current system, but it could be easier to check.  The caveat is that the sMerit balance should be checkable only for the account holder him/herself to prevent people to rush to sMerit rich users, though one can in principle estimate any user's sMerit balance using the data except source sMerits.
