Title: bitcoin-qt wallet import and offline safe storage
Post by: gigastar on November 15, 2013, 08:32:14 AM
Hello,
I have some coins that I mined a while back using bitcoin-qt.
I am wondering if there are anyways to transfer that wallet in the offline safe storage computer.
I have another computer set up with Ubuntu and it'll be off line (never going on the Internet).

I don't want to turn on the current computer with the bitcoin-qt client and sync that wallet, because I am afraid of virus/keyloggers, etc.  Also, I am afraid of leaving it on for many hours on the Internet for the blockchain to Sync!  Can I do the syncing with a different wallet.dat file and then once all is synced, copy my wallet with bitcoins into the folder so that I don't have to wait all this time syncing and having my computer exposed online?

What are my options?  Can I just copy the bitcoin-qt wallet.dat file to my cold storage computer, and then convert that wallet to electrum, armory, or another wallet that has offline storage?

Thanks,

The wallet.dat contains the privatey keys to the addresses and syncing doesn't change the content of this file.
So you could just stuff this wallet.dat in cold storage and it would be fine (also securely delete the one on the windows-pc).
I don't know if some of the other local wallets are able to import wallet.dat files, would be very helpful in this case.
Also yes, you could do the syncing with an other wallet.dat file.

An other possibility would be importing the wallet.dat into blockchain.info and sending all Bitcoins to a paper wallet / cold storage address from there.

This still requires you to be online for a short time, so if you have malware on your PC that reacts instantly (aka Bitcoin specific malware like wallet-stealer) you might be screwed.
