Title: $8,000 worth ETH stolen
Post by: abdullahtahsin420 on April 19, 2018, 12:32:24 PM
My ETH account got hacked.
My ETH address: 0xeA93c05EEbfb134951B1bFac10358625B7A12C43

I did bounty and collected tokens from 29 ICOs. I kept them so when the price increased then I will sell them.

But a hacker stole my account.

Hacker's ETH address: 0x405e23ddfdc59e847cbf6f953d0115ed2ae96a8e

I kept everything secure and nobody knew my private key. Dont know how I got hacked.

Is there a way to identify the hacker from that address?

And can I do anything to get my ETH & tokens back?

And looks like he is still hacking other accounts.

Maybe you have entered your private key in a phishing website.
You can't identify the hacker only with that address. It seems that the account was new and created solely for that purpose (storage of stolen tokens/Eth). There's no outgoing transaction as of yet and the address continue to receive tokens.

What I noticed was most tokens received were limited to Utrust, PHI, STP, SPA, SDE, TKT, ebit, COPYTRACK, Transmission, GlobCoin Crypto Platform. Does one of these tokens send you an email or let you fill out something connected to your wallet? If yes, that might be the cause.

You might used metamask or you logged into your MEW wallet with the incorrect address. Expect this none can hack your wallet mate. Worst possiblity to loose the money you might share your JSON file and Private key.
Except this nothing will work to loose the money on eth wallet.

There is nothing options you have to get your token back mate. You can only cry for it mate.

It's just that you receive false letters from these companies periodically, with a link to a phishing site.

Please give us a little more detailed information. Is this address from a desktop wallet, or an online wallet such as myetherwallet? Also, how did you stored your private key? Did you saved it in your laptop or did you wrote it down somewhere?

sad and unfortunate You may have disclosed your personal key or computer that has been compromised. That is a huge amount and a very long time. Hopefully you will be more careful in the future to avoid unfortunate circumstances

Unlucky and one of you mentioned emails. Late last year I was doing some airdrop stuff and eBit emailed me a lot. I don't click any links from emails like that I always think with my tin foil hat first. They could have phished from one of those emails it certainly is possible.

There should be some reasons…you got hacked

Might possible you enter your private key on any phishing site or disclose your information accidently with someone, may be you receive some mail from any suspicious person regarding to collect your token by filling this form etc.

That is a major mistake, so in future please avoid these kinds of mail or form.
Lastly difficult to trace or get back your tokens, but next be careful.

Can you please elaborate , how you store your tokens , how you make transaction of tokens , and how you made your last transaction before hack , it will help us to understand the situation you are facing , or maybe where is the mistake happen, rest the address you send is now receiving funds from address too , login in etherscan and make a comment on address , https://etherscan.io/address/0x405e23ddfdc59e847cbf6f953d0115ed2ae96a8e#comments , share this with community and downvote the address , those are the options you have right now

One way or the other you have expose your private key without you knowing. It is not possible to hack you if there has not been access to your private key. At least you could have got hardware wallet to be safe, you ought to have bought hardware from $8,000 you got from bounty.

It is possible if you usually log in to you MEW wallet by using Private Key. You was  hacked by a fishing website, or try scanning your PC, they can have you PK by trojan or something like that.
For me, i always use MetaMask, and log in to MEW by use json and Password.

First of all i'm really sorry for your loss.
Someone must have your private key, it's really impossible for someone to stole your money unless he got your private key. I'm just wondering what kind of wallet do you use for storing your money? if you are using myetherwallet i believe you have entered the private key into a wrong site or phishing web. It is too hard to get your money back however you can track where's the money goes by checking the block explorer.

No one can hack your ethereum address thru participating ICOs,you might have been a victime of phishing sites that is why your keys were stolen, you should install metamask extension so that you these websutes wont any good chance of stealing your keys,do you use hardwallet? because mew wont be hacked not unless mytherwallet.com's employee stole your tokens which is quite won happen.

I know Utrust, but not the other tokens. What I said was just a possibility. It's possible that the hacker used one of these tokens' names to send a phishing link and/or give people a form to fill out with their data. These days hackers do pretend to be the real project through email or any other means just to steal, so... that's why I thought of that.

Pronbaby you are a victim of phishing sites, that is why we need to secure our browsers as well by intallking metamask extension because it blocks these malicious websites,or potential phishing sites which is goign to prompt you if you are trying to access such websites.Your money could have been saved if you did install it as your private keys weill be encrypted inside metamask extension.

Nope you arent hacked, your keys are stolen thru phishing sites its either you put it on phishing sites which can be prevented if you are using metamask extension second or you have installed good anti virus and malwarebytes, third or if you have used hardwallet so that your coins will be protected from these malwares, and viruses.

Are you using your computer to surf the web?  I would take a look at your computer, do a full scan with a paid antivirus.  It is better to have a computer dedicated to only processing crypto related transactions.  Don't use it to surf the web.

This is the only possible case that i think off on where he might entered his keys on a phishing site or do have an infected computer which do have keylogger or malware that do accumulates important wallet informations being stored up into your pc.There are lots of ways on how your keys would be exposed or compromised. I have seen such address it does still continue to have incoming transactions to the persons or wallet addresses that have been hacked. There no way to retrieve those coins when the transactions is already been done.Sorry for your loss.

Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to return your funds. The only you can do is to be more careful next time:
- Never open any suspicious links from your mailbox.
- Never share your private keys
- Don't store you private keys in a cloud, the safest way is to store them on a flashcard.
- Always check MyEtherWallet official twitter for any kind of hacking activity with the site before opening your wallet.
- Always use Metamask to unlock your wallet.
- Use a reliable antivirus. It's better to have a separate laptop and use it only for crypto.
- And don't store all your money in one wallet.

You arent hacked, mew adddresses cant be hacked but your private keys can be stolen when you have logged into a phishing site,or you have fileld fake forms from these websites,or probably some malware or virus in your computer that compromsed your keys, that is why we arent saving our keys into somewhere else, protect it with your life so that you efforts wont be wasted.

You wont be hacke when you are securing your private keys, and its either using hardwallet or installing metamask extension, mew wont be hacked when your private keys arent stolen by these hackers, using those phishing sites is tricky thing but it could have been saved by metamask as it is blockig the malicous website in your browser.

It's really important for all of us to understand, how exactly this scammer works. So if we understand it, we could prevent such situations in future, it can happen to each of us!
So OP, tell as in details, how you opened your wallet, did you use matamask, have you ever clicked on any links from your email inbox, where did you store your private key? And please, check your browser history: you should remember when you last opened your wallet, check whether you used legit MEW or whatever wallet you use, not a phishing site.

I see that it happens every day with those who really know all these rules of "safe" wallet use, but it does't help. Scammers are constantly inventing new ways to stole our crypto, and we should always be one step ahead.

There isn't really anything you can do at the moment. Here in cryptocurrencies you are the owner and controller of your money. Since, it decentralized and anonymous. You can't do anything to find the hackers identity or get your tokens back. When it comes to mew, never share your pvt keys with anyone and always double check the URL.

Probably you've entered your private key in a phishing site.
Never use the private key or keystore file to log in to your Eth wallet.
Always use a hardware wallet or meta mask extension.

There is a very less chance to identify the hacker.
I did a bitcointalk search and a google search of hackers address. No trace was found.
Looks like the hacker has used a brand new Eth address.

It is due to your negligence, you should be protecting your private keys, buy some hardwallet,or atleast intall metamask extension so that everytime you are transacting to any dex or decentralized exchange you wont be needed to put your private keys because these decentralized exchanges shouldnt be trusted! You could have been saved when you are doing the basic things.

You could have been secured your keys using hardwallets,it is very cheap and you should have bought one because it can easily protect your private keys even if your computer was infected by some viruses or malwares out there, you should be protecting your keys whenever you are using decentralized exchanges so that you wont lose your keys.

Not stolen, but you did gave your private keys to these hackers easily. You should be using metamask extension + hardwallet (ledger or trezor) as these two hardwallets are the most trusted, you could be logged in to a specific phishing sites, that is why your keys are stolen without you knowing it.These are just few reasons why your funds where stolen.

You shouldnt get hacked, when you follow basic things that you should have, hardwalet, metamask, and common sense, never use decentralized exchanges when you dont have metamask because it encrypts your private keys when you are using these exchanges, you wont need to put your keys manually to these exchanges such as fork and etherdelta.

Maybe you have entered your private key in a phishing website.

Most probably this is the reason behind this hack because it is really impossible to hack a wallet without details of wallet, there are many replica websites which are created only for this purpose.
Many beginners get into this trap as like OP, BTW unfortunately there is no way to trace person from wallet address,

Which option did you use to "log in" your MEW wallet? If it's private key, there is no way of stealing your tokens without that private key. Try to remember if you shared it anywhere else... I don't believe that's the matter, but sometimes people mistakenly share their private keys instead of their wallet address for airdrops and etc.

You cannot track who stole your coins, what you can do is to buy a hardwallet, install some good antivirus and anti-malware softwars, and most importantly use hardwallet when you are holding big amount of assets.Metamask extension can block those phishing sites easily, hardwallets does add extra protection when your computer is affected by viruses and malwares than can steal your private key easily.

Some people were in exposed with those phishing sites behind and most probably their private keys were exposed online like sharing with friends or with strangers. Its really a sad experience if it happens you're the victim of being hacked, so one thing I can advise to most who encounter this kind of nightmare you should be more careful next time and the responsibility is always yours, no one to be blame but you personally. Phishing websites can be a replicate of myetherwallet, some characters omitted to somewhat trap every user now and then. But to avoid it you should have more secured antivirus and firewall of PC must be active all the time.

Unfortunately you wont be able to get those stolen coins, and you cant track who does that do you,but what you can do is to start being a security freak, use metamask, and a hardwallet to protect your mew wallet from these attacks, phishing sites wont be a problem when you have installed metamask extension in your browser cause it blocks a lot of malicious websites/potential phishing sites.

I notice sometimes bounty hunters giving their private key instead of their ethereum address when signing up, since this goes automatic anyone can see that key untill you change it. Maybe thats what happened?

Why you arent using hardwallets? because these wallets are the most secured that you could ever had, should you use anti-viruses and metamask extension so that you wont need to worry about these phishing sites because you will be prompted when you are attempting to access malicious and scammy websites that is why i do use metamask.

whether you work in a team. or your laptop/computer is still an old version, or you often watch a movie or download something from an untrusted site,
the most frequent case is that your computer gets infected with malware, and a rare case is someone near you become the perpetrator.

always activate Metamask and let it always connect to your laptop/computer, and remember never lend your laptop/computer to others.

Not going to happen when you have installed metamask extension, probably phishing sites got your private keys! did you logged in into some exchange lately? that requires private keys to sync your wallet? if you did it,surely it is phishing sites.Which is why i am not going o remove metamask extension as it is encrypting those private keys when you re using fork and etherdelta or other dex.

do you use metamask?
have you Ever entered your private key in any other site other than myetherwallet?(could still be a fake mew)
but you might have yourself to blame if you entered your private key somewhere in order to gain tokens.

did you have an encrypted file or did you enter it in plain text?

I suggest to anyone that isn't super good with their computer security, invest in a hardware wallet.
it really takes away all worry. $8000, put 0.2% into a hardware wallet and this wouldn't have happened  :-\

You shouldnt be getting hacked, because if you have installed metamas,or atleast use a hardwallet you wont be hacked, because these wallet has built in private keys which is why it is unbreakable and its security has been trusted by the community for years. You should protect the private keys just like what you are doing with your password.

That's sad to know... specially when a proper user got tricked by uncosiderate hackers. Know that crypto uses blockchain technology and usually, once the transaction is successful, there is no way to get it back what ever you do. Another thing is that the anonymity of user also applies to transactions thats why you cant chase after the hacker... just sad.

Sadly we all know that most crypto's and token transactions are irreversible and no name attached to it, so I doubt that you have the chance to get it back. The only thing I can think of is that you are probably phished, that's why he was able to gain access to your private keys.

And really sorry that you lost a lot of money mate, and I just checked the account and it looks like it all happened like 7 hours ago. All we can do right now and just be vigilant and really take care of our accounts  because those hackers are really targeting everyone here, specially those account who have a fairly huge amount on their wallets.

I have also changed my wallet's address several times, first I lost my wallet because I have spread my private key. Second, just as you have, I am very angry at that moment because my money is gone without me knowing what causes it. Then, I found some purported wallet addresses to automatically send eth to hacker addresses. That I realized when I tried to save some of my tokens from the next bounty.

First of all, I need to know.. how the hell that huge amount of money can be stolen ? I mean, HOW ? Are you using personal computer or laptop ? Are you using public computer or private computer in your home ? Are you using office computer or what ? Honestly, I really do not understand about that. If you have so much money like 8 grand, how can you log on some public computers. I hope you do not log on on some public computers. And above all that, if you use personal or private computer, I think your computer has some viruses and dangerous program. I hope you really understand about using a computer. If you are just an ordinary people who does not know about computer, than that is dangerous.

You have to ask yourself only one question: "Did I entered my private key somewhere or left it on my machine?". If that is a case, then probably you were phished. Maybe you clicked on some fake mail, telling you to claim your tokens by entering your private key. Or maybe hacker got to your private key on your machine. How do you log in your wallet? Do you use PV key to log in? You 'd better use JSON Files to log in. It is a file that can be used to log in other hardwares. if the hacker spy your PV key is possible to lost the fund but if the hacker log with your JSON file? it is difficult except you are connected to bittorent network so other can infiltrate your PC. Other option is that you got hacked because you click phising link? You can remember what you mistakes you have made?

OP is part of one big farming rig and most likely not being honest, but it is good to know that OP is owner of that address and that they have private keys of that address. This forum is full of abusers and if this story is truth(which I highly doubt), it only proofs that karma is a bitch.

More and more often I hear that wallets are hacking. You lost a large amount. Such money should be kept on different and protected purses.

Maybe you entered your private key into a phishing site, or someone closer to you, had access to them. But right now, there is nothing you can do about it.

There are many people who have created fake myethwallet sites. If you are not careful then you may have visited one of the fake sites. Sometimes you need to save your myethwallet site so that you can save more time with your property

It's just that you receive false letters from these companies periodically, with a link to a phishing site. :D

I feel sorry to hear your loss, I think that will never be recovered, it is hard to trace anyone here in the industry, because we are all anonymous here, make sure that you are changing your pw regularly and keep your keys in private

I agree. Phishing is one and more accurate way of hacking private keys and accounts here in this industry that is why we need to get rid of this kind of modus. We are responsible of what will happen to our funds. There a lot of prying eyes that wants us to be a victim so much better to have situational awareness at all times. Take note that all transactions are irreversible so watchout and double check the site you are visiting.

there is no way to get your eth and tokens back, unless the hacker send it back. but there is no such thing. the only thing you could do is move on, forget about what happen.

I think you got nothing to do. You can even save your privacy (secret keys) then how can you recover this, I believe there is no way to get the funds back

In your case, it is very likely that you entered your private key on a phishing site. Now you should check your computer and mobile phone immediately for viruses. If you store the private key on your computer or mobile phone, it may be The virus steals your data!

There is nothing to be done for the stolen ETH. In the world of virtual money, it is impossible to follow the money. Since there is no legal sanction, it is not possible to do anything for the money stolen.

Thats one of the disadvantages of unregulated cryptocurrency, you cant do any legal actions regarding the issue. Although it can be tracked, the addresses that has been used and involved. It's really sad to hear people who got stolen. Best thing we could do is to maximize our security as of now.

Unfortunately, nothing can be done. You can forget about your tokens ... It could happen for different reasons. Perhaps you made a mistake and entered your private key on the fishing site, or malware was installed on your computer ... All the same, the optimal option for storing tokens is hardware wallets.

Malware attempts in hacking is rampant nowadays. I also got victimized by this kind of hack. I am still lucky that i don't put my egg in one basket.
Lesson learned in hard way. Better to be safe than sorry. Now, I practice basic security practice and planned to buy Hardwallet next month.

Do not give your private key to any site/DEX. Use metamask, do not install any suspicious software and have good anti phishing software. And also be cautious. It is really easy to get your private keys if you are careless enough

I think you can't do anything. but accept it that your coins has been compromise. Admit it or not you should be responsible of your private keys. The best thing that you can do is buy a hard ware wallet and keep your private key safe.

Your private keys may be stolen utilizing phishing sites, and you could have spared your cash when you have introduced metamask expansion in the primary place.Buy some hardwallets and im beyond any doubt you will be secured, you dont need to stress over these phishing sites, viruses and malwares in your PC in light of the fact that hardwallets has additional layer of assurance.

Its possible that you have exposed your private key unknowingly and the hackers are very sharp at their walk. Its so sad that the hackers have stolen all your funds and I doubt if you can recover the stolen funds because transactions on the blockchain is irreversible.

Cryptocurrency is so anonymous that no one could trace a particular transaction to anybody. That is why you have to be careful with your pass key.

I am afraid that you are not going to get it back in the near future. You can set a watch on that address as eventually the hacker will want to move and possibly sell the tokens and you may try to get info from a exchange. But for 8k is probably not worth the effort of a legal requirement.

If you have stolen tokens from your crypto currency purse, then you still have somewhere to disclose your data. You can not now return tokens, unfortunately. Next time, change your wallet sometimes.

Sorry to learn that however I do think you have signed in your record or private key to a phishing site which si why your keys are stolen, you could keep this from utilizing metamsk augmentation in your browser, that is the reason you ought to do your best to keep those private keys secured,do not spare your keys into a plac where the programmers can without much of a stretch access it.,use hardwallet and you will be fine.

This is sad but it looks weird, maybe you may have followed a phishing email or something. Also why should you keep so much in just one wallet at least divide it and use so many wallets so that even if you get hacked from one,you will still be safe somehow.Hackers are always been smarter so be alert.
