Here's a fun list I made showing off orders of magnitude and Bitcoin, from the very big to the very small. Under each heading is an item currently (November 16, 2013) worth about as much as the unit.

You're completely right: the satoshi is worth a lot more than the average grain of sand. In fact, it's worth 3 times as much as a large grain of sand. However, it's also worth only a quarter of a grain of rice, which is the next step up. Hopefully I clarified the value now, explicitly stating that it is a large grain of sand.
