Title: Mining in College Dorm room?
Post by: TheTichman on April 22, 2018, 11:26:02 PM
Hey I'm thinking about making some money on the side and mining in my college dorm room where electricity is payed for... What do ya think? I've never done this. Is it worth it?

This question has been asked a thousand times. Try searching to get your answers more quickly. In the meantime, if a couple dollars a day is worth the heat and noise, you can mine altcoins with a high-end graphics card. Nothing else will be feasible for you.

It is quite feasible if the electricity for your room line is sufficient for mining, and or you should seek permission from the dormitory to discuss the cost of electricity.

I'm sure that your landlord will kill you if he/she find out what you are doing! ;D, the cost of electricity is to high that your landlord will cry after seeing the electric bill, but I think it this is also a good idea and a good start for bitcoin mining, just as permission first before building a rig at the dorm.

It is very good and very suitable for you to do, because you can make money for your tuition, but here surely the first problem is electricity, and you should pay your own electricity for your mining cost.

That's a very good idea, you can use your room to mine crypto, and with dorm rooms you will be able to make a lot of money to meet your needs.

You need to ask permission from your landlord. If you don't ask him, I am afraid he will be deadly shocked seeing his electric bill. As consequence, if he manages to find out, you will be kicked out from your dormitory. Besides, calculation must be made before building mining rig. Your profit should be higher than your mining cost.

While you could do it, yes, you're probably going to have some people in your room a tad mad at you for the heat which is going to be a problem -- this is if you scale and have a good amount of cards running at once. Also, you're going  to have someone from the college be mad at you due to you using a massive amount of electricity (as they probably track room by room)

This is going to be something which I would advise against doing unless you own your own place, which you don't right now.

I think this is not good idea because you consume big electricity bill and for sure your landlord is wondering what happened to the electic bill? And thats the problem instead of getting more money from mining you would pay more on your rent because of that thing. For me the way is to ask permission in your landlord then talk about what is your purpose and what is the good benefits of mining. Then if your agree with your suggestion by giving your landlord an additional payment for rent in your room. Then you can now start mining but if you earned from mining dont forget to pay your landlord.

Is it worth it?

First you should find out of there are any kind of specific restrictions for power usage. I doubt there will be any repercussions by your dormitory adviser for using your computer in a particular way. It is none of their business what you are doing on your computer, unless you make it their business or you enable it to be their business. We're actually discussing something similar about an apartment complex in another thread and I imagine that the considerations and potential concerns are relatively the same. You have to make sure that you don't over do it and that the wires/circuits can handle the load you are attempting to put upon them.

It's worth it if you are searching for a long-term investment that will produce you coins for many years to come.

I wouldn't suggest ASIC mining in a college dorm, because they're too loud. GPU mine a couple high-end cards and don't allow anyone to snoop in your business. If you are within the electricity restrictions (assuming there is any) and are not breaking any rules/agreements then you should be golden. If it does not increase your electricity bill monthly, then this is a huge bonus for you.

As long as you get permission from the management. Otherwise, you’re just taking advantage of the system. Great idea, though. A lot better than wasting your time wandering aimlessly on the internet or playing games.

unless you are planning to run a mining farm with 50 mining rigs, i don't see how the cost of electricity can be high enough for anyone to even notice! as a college student i doubt that he is willing to invest that much either!

what he can do is to build a gaming PC (basically a strong GPU or two) and then mine altcoins with that PC. the electricity cost of running such a PC is not that high to raise any flags.

I don't think it's a good idea. How can you sleep well with noise and heat? With others suggestion about mining altcoin, it's better as I've friends who are mining altcoins with their small rooms. @OP you should permission if the landlord will allow you to do so. But I'm betting that he would allow it for the first time especially if he/she doesn't have knowledge about mining crypto's. And wait for the first month's bill until he/she will notice that there's a sudden surge to the electricity bill.

Well yes, but if he's going to do something like this it's not like he's even taking advantage of the situation that he has himself in right now. He does have an advantageous situation when it comes to mining for free, but if he does on a bigger scale to even really make it worthwhile HE'S GOING TO SCREW SOMETHING UP PRETTY BAD -- the school won't be happy.

So yeah, I guess if you want to try it try it with a few cards at first. See how that goes. Let us know

What made you reach this conclusion? Mining would take advantage of the situation, so how do you figure that he wouldn't be taking advantage of the situation?

It doesn't seem like anybody is talking about doing it on a large scale. We are not turning the entire dormitory into a mining rig. It was simply suggested that OP build a desktop computer with a high end GPU or two, this would be a decent start to mining and there's no way the administration would disallow you to run your own computer. The school wouldn't know any different from simply running a desktop computer.

:o You just said so much against this user mining and now your conclusion is waiting for the outcome. I'm very confused.
