Okay! The guy who owns the bot isn't going to sell the rest of his 2000 btc! He's just putting up a fake wall.

Otherwise we'd be in $10 territory and he'd definitely be losing money

Just watch it go right back down... Your wishfull (and greedy) thinking can't help the fact this will probably settle around 10$ for the next few days (until it goes lower probably). I could be wrong though, but we'll see.

BTC can't fail though, the truth is on MY side. The day you show me the news story that SHA-256 Encryption has been cracked is the day that "bitcoin fails". And even then the network can easily be upgraded to an even higher standard if that were ever to happen.

There are many ways bitcoin can fail, or at least be so crippled to be essentially considered a failure.

1. The major exchanges pretend to be banks, and governments crack down through anti money laundering and tax laws.  Has Mt Gox and Tradehill got the funds to fight drawn out legal cases, and can they exist without the support of banks?
2. The value of bitcoins keeps falling.  Speculators who got burned and miners write off bitcoin as another get rich quick scheme that failed.
3. Bitcoin fails to find a real use.  There's Silk Road, and not much else.  A currency that swings 10%+ on a daily basis isn't much good for use as a currency.
4. Bitcoin fails to get mass mind share.  People simply don't 'understand' it and fail to adopt it.  It remains the current niche player.
5. Something better comes along.  Maybe a system where confirmations don't take hours.  Bitcoin wouldn't scale if we suddenly threw a million transactions a day at it.
6. 50% attack.  If I was rich and powerful and didn't want to see Bitcoin succeed, I would buy up enough GPU power to gain 50% hashing capability and deny transactions for long enough to make others give up.  This scenario is unlikely, as the rich and powerful just don't care about bitcoin.  Maybe a hacker with a botnet could do it for lulz.

Collisions being found in SHA-256 would be the most unlikely failure scenario.

Only No.4 is a real threat, a mass mind share is the only thing that gold has but Bitcoin doesn't.

A BTC with govt or corporate backing with an infrustructure already in place.

They would not want to dig a grave for themselves, any currency with all the characteristics of Bitcoin is going to hurt their interests(yes, including gold, the earliest decentralized currency, and that's why the U.S government banned gold hoarding for 40 years.)

Couple of days ago I thought that we would be seeing wild swings between 9.2 and 7.7. It is still in volatile territory as single transactions are moving the price by an entire dollar. it seems like the swing territory is between 6 and 9. It's going down again as traders are cashing out while high.

If you want a certain price for a certain volume then let it build so you can get it. Otherwise you're basically shooting yourself in the foot.

Why do you assume everyone has your exact strategy and position?  It's just as valid to dump, cause a panic, and re-accumulate later.  Not everyone is long bitcoin at the same price as you.  That's why it's called "trading."

Some of the bitcoin early adopters are perfectly cavalier about losing hundreds of thousands of dollars they could have otherwise had and diversified with.  It's nice to be a multi-millionaire before getting lucky in bitcoin.  Others may not have that luxury -- we're in the middle of a rough economic time, and an extra half million dollars may be the difference between having a bad time and clear sailing for many people.

Satoshi is worth over 10 million dollars at the current "buy buy buy it'll go to the moon" sale price.

All it takes is one early adopter to figure out that taking a huge dump on the market means they can wind up with MORE dollars and MORE coins than when they started.  And a lower difficulty to mine more.  And a purge of speculators.

Errrm I don't really see how I'm making any assumptions even remotely like that.

Was made as a comment on ticker behavior at the time of the post. I'm cool with dumping but back then there was a string of attempts to move fairish volumes 3-600 that failed miserably but at the same time knocked a fair bit off the price without moving more than 80-100BTC. Yes I know that may have been the motive but it sure didn't look like it (at least not to me) usually stuff like that is a bit more structured  ;D

Early adopters sure they can crash the system but if you're trading in BTC with more than you can afford to loose then well..... The risk is one of the really attractive things for a lot of people.

I'm guessing the dude that sold 25000 btc hit a snag when withdrawing $1000 per day. Now he has to rebuy bitcoins and transfer them to tradehill to cash his money out.

Nope, he knew about the 1000 USD limit all along. He never wanted USD, he wanted to buy back more BTC than he started out with.

The $1000 is just a security short-circuit. Legitimate users can have bigger withdrawals arranged. And there's hardly any depth at Trade Hill to absorb a sell-off of that magnitude.
