It's no good looking on the beginner's or discussion boards. They are all about bounty and air drops and social networking stuff. I'd like to award members that are interested in Bitcoin and reputable crypto currencies, but I've almost given up trying to find them.

I've found discussions in the technical boards to be quite interesting, and surely of a better quality than most boards.. Maybe take a look there?

But, you're right. finding "NEW" members in these boards is still quite hard.

I have the same problem.  I need to get rid of sMerit.

I visit the tech boards, legal and serious discussion, and a few others if I feel in the mood. The meritable posts seem to be by seniors though. I feel that I ought to help junior or new members, but they are either on ignore, or they are hiding from me. :)

I have been known to visit Meta as well.

The newbies that are here to learn won't care about merits, the newbies who want to rank up quick for the bounty moniez will..

I've tried to help newbies but only end up meriting senior members.

I've just had this brilliant idea - why don't we have a board for beginners. :)

hello sir, i think that merit should spread around all members, many members working hard to rank up but no merit receiving even though good and helpful posts. i have many excellent posts with large information and would be grateful sir if you consider would give me some merit. i only like reputable currenices like marinecoin and bitcoincashgolddarkprivatediamond. i am new by the way.

Certainly when I was brand new, I didn't feel like I had the knowledge or confidence to contribute in the technical boards, and so a lot of my early posts (and early merits) were in either Bitcoin or Altcoin Discussion. When I read/comment on those boards now, I sort by newest threads first (add ;sort=first_post;desc to the end of the url). The first few replies after a topic has started is where you are most likely to find original thoughts and not just endless repeats, and you can tell pretty quickly whether an actual discussion is forming or whether the threads is turning in to another shitposting megathread. Don't know if that's any help to you? YMMV.

I don't know how you guys play this role of giving sMerits. I almost forget every time that I have some sMerits to give away  :P

I used to enjoy looking around, as I found some interesting threads that I probably wouldn'y have opened had I not been distributing largesse.

Recently it seem to be more annoying than interesting. I thought the merit system had improved things, but there seems to be a new influx of members who don't care. I start to wonder if it is a load of bots who don't have aspirations above Junior.

I must admit going through some of the sections is sort of like wading through the local sewers. I think the beginners section has always been a little iffy in quality as your going to get basic questions there all the time, but with the recent ICO hype there's more users over there wanting to know about ICOs than Bitcoin.

Serious discussion seems to be working as intended. Some good topics popping up and some thoughtful replies. Technical support and Development and technical discussion has always been a good place for insightful replies too. If you are looking to reward newbies specifically though your going to need to go and wade through the cesspool.

It seems a shame, as we should be encouraging the good new members.

Agreed.  I think the word is out that you can get merits underground so people aren't worrying about it.

Theymos should decrease the max merit sent per person per month to 10 from 50.  :/

Precisely, and that mostly happened on local board section. They can hide them because only two moderators have and can't easily be caught. I think is just enough for a post giving smerit at least 1 to 2 per post, if more than that or more 10 smerit give that is already suspicious that they abusing merit system and having underground sabotage.

Well I think people, whether new or old, if interested in the real purpose of the forum and understands its basic reason of existence won't just stay in one or more than one chosen boards or sections, but they will be visiting most of the sections to find out what new things are posted in that day. So looking for such people in only a few sections or boards won't do good IMO, but you should be visiting most of the sections to find what you are looking for.

I think it's interesting that TMAN's thread about him having loads of sMerit is dropping on the beginner's board. A couple of weeks ago, they would have been all over it. now it seems as if they don't care.

Maybe consider a trip through the BTC mining threads. There are lots of new members there. Many of them don't even know about merit, or the general crappiness of spam campaigning. They are miners. They are here to learn and share knowledge, not make money off the forum. I've seen plenty of great useful posts on Wallets, exchange, coding, investment, tech tips etc.

Though I've personally merited some, my well runs dry, and since most senior members there don't care about merit, it gets wasted on their pal's one liner reply they agree with. It's a shame really. I've even posted, what I think is meritable, and go unnoticed, sometimes.
There are many members there, like myself, that will go years without ranking up, and in all honesty, I just want to have the rank, and coins, my signature space is donated to helping the community.

Isn't that what beginners and help section is supposed to be used for? If it is, then there is no need to create another board dedicated for newbies. Mods there just needs to be stricter in moderating it.
I don't know how they seem to not care at all? Maybe they have accepted that they won't rank up anymore? Or maybe they just don't care since they can still earn some cents with their ranks?

I wouldn't put it pass them that they don't even know it exists and just want to know where they can earn their money and how. I don't look at the newbies section very often but, it's clear that most of the posts there aren't about Bitcoin at all rather they are about airdrops and ICOs.

Plus, these types of ICOs and bounties don't require you to be a certain rank and they encourage spam around the forum. So even if they know about merit they probably don't care as long as they can spam and get their tokens...

Yep this is correct, some of the most hard core posters are here just to gain/exchange knowledge on their particular subject.   Their speculation is in the hardware and sometimes more then small farms so knowing what raises hash rates is really a big deal.
Most of the threads I read are alt coin farming but sometimes I read on the bitcoin mining though its been years since I've been able to do this myself sadly.   I always thought the network was best when most widely distributed but I guess it couldnt stay that way :/

Some miners do guides and are very helpful to others and deserve more merit and attention then they get but most of the posters there seem to be lower ranks with little merit circulating, so it seems.

At the moment, I've got the alt boards on ignore. This is because almost all of the alt seem to be scams in my opinion. I do need to look at some in the future though, as I want to collect my coins from the Bitcoin forks. I'm also interested in Steem and Wix, but don't really have time to take them on as major new interests. I've always had a hankering to try mining, but I think it's too late for me to mine Bitcoin. I'm tempted to try mining some alt using a Raspberry Pi and solar power. This is really just for the interest, and I understand that it is unlikely to show much profit, if any. Once again, it's time constraints that force me to be realistic about any new projects that I take on.

I do not have a lot of sMerit to share, yet even I can't find enough "new" members to reward... The quality of new posters' messages is appalling, either shilling, begging, Engrishing, Marinecoining or spamming. So I've decided to simply reward those who deserve it, no matter what his rank is. If he is a Hero or Legendary member, so be it.

Unfortunately, I've also blocked the local boards. This is because, apart from a bit of schoolboy French, I only speak English, so there would be no point in me trying to read threads.

Didn't anyone tell you guys all those meritable folks are hanging out together in that new super secret thread... Can't believe they forgot to invite the people with Merit.

Sadly that doesn't exist. My only suggestion is twofold in helping disperse your merit and grow your ignore list. Click on a random profile scroll there posts and see where it leads you. Maybe they get merit maybe they get ignored or maybe they fall into that middle ground like a waiter/waitress who spilled a drink on your buddy, but got your order right.

It's a twist on my new past time where I creep through peoples trust and click on reference links to see some of the history of BTC talk.

Instead of getting merits. We need to concentrate on making posts with the proper reply mate wherever you can find the problems and you can help with the reply you do. I see the people invested some money on merit farming, even that is not good for the forum and its a kind of spamming too.

I advice you to share all the merits to people who ever have the quality post you feel. That may help the people. I have seen the thread on services section which can help to rank up with few merits. That kind of act will be helpful mate.

It's a really good idea, Hero members needs to gather 500 merits to rank up just one level, and everyone is just looking for newbies and jr. members to send merits to them, and nobody cares about the Heros...
(You know, the real Heros also need merits just like the newbies and the others :P )
I also send merit to Heros and Legendary members, because it seems that in the end, the post quality is somehow determined by the rank (or you can find some decents posts easier if you search among Legendaries and not newbies...)

Honestly, To tell you all guys it's hard for us to capture your attention from our post or thread that if it is meritable or not. As far as I did until now i'm trying to work hard to earn merit I even join merit giveaway threads in meta I did receive one that's the first best day i had when i have one. I even accept opinions from another user for I can improve my post's quality.

Telling readers that you are just posting to capture the approval/attention of some merit sources, is not a good idea mate. You need to help people understand more about bitcoin, bitcointalk, blockchain or cryptocurrency, not to ass kissing those with sMerit for merit approval. If that is your idea, this should be changed from bitcointalk.org to smerittalk.org. Look around and just enjoy.


Yes, admins, mods, and other members will not bother checking, because they have their own busy lives outside this forum. Complaining is not the right solution either.

On the contrary, it's not that hard to capture their attention, even posting a short one will suffice as long as the content piques their interest. Thinking that you deserve some merit because you've worked hard in creating a quality post does not guarantee you of getting one if, in actuality, that other user doesn't see your post a merit worthy one.

Seems like you can post a long one and put more effort when it comes to topics that are related to merits but quite short with crypto related kinds of stuff.

I'd don't think I'm a typical awarder. I don't look at rank, post total, activity or current merit score when deciding on an award. I do look at post history though, especially if a reply is good, but not outstanding. If I see too many of those short meaningless bumping posts, then I move on.

You dont really need to capture their attention. Stay on topic and make sure to post meaningfull content. Not that you need to make your post stand out in front of other posts. Merit sources would read what you post but surely if you write huge walls of text which would give then retinal detachment and vitreous hemorrhage then you wont be getting merited.

That is something I would discourage. Merit giveaway threads are not my thing which is why I did not start my own even if I am hoarding some sMerit.

I get it buddy, That is why i need to learn more about cryptocurrency. I haven't learn much that's why I'm having trouble getting merit. Base on what I posted first in this thread about capturing attention is that I want to learn on how to be a good quality poster. Atleast i put an effort rather than posting spam messages. One more thing, capturing attention means I want to learn how to create interesting thread topics or replies that deserves a merit.

As far as I can tell merit system did not prevent all user to create spam post rather than creating good quality post that deserves a merit. I think he wants to earn merit. Just create one so you would receive a merit.

I can see why some members just give out 20-50 merits in one hit. It's such a struggle to award merit in ones and twos.

On the other hand, there's really no harm just holding onto sMerits until some good posts come along.  Recently I've seen several posts I wanted to merit, but didn't have any to give out.  There's no way at this point I'd hand out 20 merits for a single post.  Even if I was a merit source I wouldn't do that unless the post was really good--but I haven't given a single post that many since the whole thing started.

I have a number of sections blocked, so for me the best posts continue to be made in Meta and Reputation.  I've all but given up on trying to find anything worth meriting in Bitcoin Discussion, Economics, and the entire altcoin section.  There's nothing but junk there, and it's unfortunate.  You would think B.D. would be one of the best places to find good posts, but that's where the sig campaign spammers go to get lost in spam, and Altcoin Discussion is where all the bounty participants go to do likewise.

I find some posts on the tech boards, and serious discussion. I need to see how the Flying Fish has got on in political as well, that would be an interesting one for me. I do try in beginners, but that is a struggle. Meta seems to have become the new discussion and off topic board, so I find a few here. I ought to spend time in speculation, as the long term price of Bitcoin is of interest to me.

This is the type of post that tends to be unrecognised, but I think it is part of the basic community help initiative in Bitcoin Talk. No doubt some will consider it as a wasted vote, as it went to a legendary, but I believe that we should say thank you to legendaries as well as newbies.
