Title: Opensource ATM Machine!
Post by: jimbobway on August 03, 2011, 12:32:25 AM
I was working with another fellow developing an ATM machine.  However, things are not going as planned business wise so I am trying to explore my options.  I am the sole programmer for the ATM and may open source the software depending on how much interest there is here.  The Bitcoin ATM software is almost done.  I have been able to put in bills and out comes bitcoins to your bitcoin address!

The reason why I want to opensource the software is because I want it to spread as far as possible.  Anyone should be able to set up a bitcoin ATM anywhere.  In addition, the team I was working with did not involve me during contract negotiations of the formation of the company so I feel a bit left out and may venture on my own.  What do you guys think?  I need to make a decision in the next few days.

Cool beans.

How much is the hardware?  Maybe you can opensource the code and sell and support the hardware for profit.

Hmm I am familiar with the insides of automated teller machines, and their deposit mechanisms do not actually verify the deposit. That is done by hand at the banks processing centers.

Did you replace this hardware with something more along the lines of a bill validator from a vending machine? The deposit needs to be verified before bitcoins can be sent out.

Most Bank of America ATMs that accept deposits also count and validate the bills inserted.  I haven't yet noticed other banks employing this technology, but it does indeed exist.

Very cool stuff! Part of what we need.

Don't forget the reverse; input btc payment, get $20 bills!

Yes. I've seen ATMs like this (out of US)

How much does an ATM cost?

Buying an ATM would not be hard but buying one that receive deposits could be hard or expensive.

I would love to see an open source ATM machine, it would certainly lower the barrier of entry for guys like me to start up local and eventually regional coverage so that anyone can buy bitcoins instantly with cash without having to trust an exchange or having to have a bank account.

How much you want for the software and to add some features.

I missed that, sure hope you two can figure it out.

Old Topic, but any progress on this.

If hardware was not too expensive, id definitely give it a go as Family operates a shop opposite a very large College / University. It may spur the young folk to get on BitCoin.

Hi I'm also working on developing a open source ATM from j/xfs. I have stagnated in a position where I can not find the communication mechanism with the banks. So far I could able to connect all the pieces in the atm into one software.  I'm very grateful if someone can give me an opinion on this. I would like to know where I should start working on this.
