Title: Bitcoin personal Debit Cards????
Post by: Matumaru on November 21, 2013, 12:41:18 PM
Hi everyone,

I donīt know if someone exposed this before. I was trying to find something related here but I couldnīt.

The point of this topic is discuss the idea about creating a "BTC Card". Roughly the Idea would be:

- Create a creditcard size, chip integrated (EEPROM, M.MAR), to use as personal wallet "on the street". (HW)
- Though chipcard reader, transfer amounts of BTC between your regular Wallet and the BTC Card. (SW)
- The chip wallet would be protected by PIN code (SW)
- Card reader for sellers, so you can walk in, purchase, put your PIN and transfer the amount to sellers regular Wallet (on site PC). (HW)

I think this step would be the Ultimate step to implement Bitcoin in everyday life. What you think about?

Questions, Critics, Knowledge will be appreciated. (... and some Trolls for sure!)

Many of us believe that it will take something exactly like you describe, a 'last mile' solution, to take things mainstream for every day, retail POS transactions - as well as to the 3.5 billion people who are currently 'unbanked' (30M in US alone).

This sounds very close to openCXP which will be released in dec. The protocol is described in the draft white paper at www.opencxp.org

Any comments/feedback are welcome if you do read the draft. We've been receiving valuable input from hardware vendors, merchants and other interested parties for the past several months.

Looks like these folks (http://bitcoincard.org/) are working on such a thing.

Don't know whether this will be a viable product, but it looks like they are serious about it.

Interesting link... but it looks like it was last updated when bitcoin was at $4.80? maybe 2011, 2012?

There have been several attempts on doing this, i doubt its viable.

Both projects look pretty good but the idea is to keep it simple. Look, for example companies have tried to get the phone pay since years, and what? why? nobody wants to use "air" for transactions or to have together their financial data. People wants something physical, and human required action such as insert card, type pins, etc... Something that you can "see" actually working. Even consider that a "virtual currency" is a huge leap for traditional minds.

Also, if you want to implement something to public it should be cheap and accessible, functional, secure, but no rocket science. Look Paypal, I remember how was at the beginning for a lot of people to "publish my creditcard on internet" and now is the most reliable method of payments worldwide. The same with ebay, afraid of buying "a picture" on a web site, smoke, "how can I be sure that I'm buying something", "I don't know that person", " I can't touch or test the item". But still they work. Why? Accessibility, trust, simplicity, and most important: Everybody is using it.

If you target to "Everybody" it needs to be simple.

-A card (standard).
-A card reader to connect with your computer wallet and charge it.
-A PIN code to secure it.
-A device you can plug, identify and pay.

I don't think ANYONE would ask "How it works?"

^^ That's exactly correct.

The difficulty has been to do it in a completely decentralized way with no additional servers, card issuing corp. etc. This is the problem OpenCXP solves.

The project I listed IS a card, the mobile software helps you manage the accounts tied to the card and can be used as an added security device.  It's not actually mandatory for it's use if say for instance you leave your phone at home or your phone looses it's charge.  It actually meets all the standards you describe above and more, this project is all about convenience of payment systems.  Incorporating bitcoin into the system and treated for example like a debit card/gift card transaction should not be overly difficult if you can convince the backing players to do it and establish a payment processor to handle the transactions.

I have kept a small diary on the whole process of
buying a Bitplastic Bitcoin Debit Card as I did with the "Raxcard Ripoff"
from purchase of the card to withdrawing money out of the card

I just went to the store and tried the "Visa" out today
Click here for the full diary and to find if it works

Bravo, bravo and BRAVO!

This was what I was expecting for. A true transparent process which doesn't care about market volatibilty or new "concept" cards. Just that card-bitcoin relation.

Hope this has a warm welcome, and we can talk about bitcoin plastic like something normal in the next months.

There's also Coinkite (https://coinkite.com/), which I believe is already working in one place or two.
