Title: Does anyone else think bitcoin is a stupid name?
Post by: ardana123 on November 22, 2013, 06:38:22 PM
I think the name is one of the reasons people don't take us seriously. When I tell them about it, they're like hmm "funny name"... Surely there must be better alternatives.

The market seems to think that it is acceptable.

I haven't run into anyone who thinks its a funny name. I think twitter would have to be the least serious and odd name, but they are doing just fine haha.

It`s better that BBQ Coin at least. What I kind of have an issue with at this point is the `coin` part, but too late to change now.

Just think of how stupid the name "Google" was when they started to use it.

Doesn't matter now.  In the long run the name is only as stupid as the thing that it represents.

Satoshi could have called these Bozo Tokens and by the end of next year nobody would think it was silly anymore.

Bitcoin is definitely a misleading name.
Coins are indivisible units of a currency. Bitcoins are not.

Telling people that there will never be more than 21 Million Bitcoins always rings the alarm bell "there won't be enough".

OTOH, I couldn't think of a better, catchy name.

It's short, memorable, and easy to pronounce. I'd say it's pretty good for a name.

Yeah I totally agree. It's a great name for the technology itself. But for the currency, the actual units you transfer from one another, it's misleading, it's arbitrary at 100million "satoshis", and yeah, it sounds silly.

Personally I'd love to see it be called something people already know. Like credits from every sci-fi movie ever. It would make it much easier to explain to new people.

I dunno, just 'credits' would probably seem confusing ("Hey, have you heard of Credits?"). I suppose Cryptocredit or Bitcredit would work, but pretty much every other cryptocurrency has a 'coin' suffix so it seems to be working ok so far.

Probably this.

see this -> BITCOINS [BIT] + [COINS] Bit from BITs, since is an electronic way(or digital if u care that much...) of sending money...
every data is transferred to one chip, to another, and is all using bit(electric signal pulses) one bit is one piece out of 8, from a byte...
So that's why the BIT, now the coin...well...no need to tell right?
so BITCOIN...like -> coin being send using BITs, Billions of bits but...are bits...

Any way..

No, no better name if u put a lot of tough on it...BUT i'm sure those peoples who say that, that  is a 'funny name' as u say...they don't know shit about IT

Yeh, another name could make bitcoin Stronger? i don't know, probably, cause when some one doesn't why the name is bitcoin...why would they thrust on it? make sence...that's why we need to make them believe on bitcoin, convince them to use on all day basis..

Me and my friend are finishing some online store, it's mainly for Brazil, BUT...may, may be for other country's too.
if anyone who know stuff like that can and do some with bitcoin, it will Grow, that simple...very simple..
Sorry for long text anyway...

And again, sorry for my bad english...i'm not THAT good on it for now....ps: i'm getting better ha ha

I dunno, just 'credits' would probably seem confusing ("Hey, have you heard of Credits?"). I suppose Cryptocredit or Bitcredit would work, but pretty much every other cryptocurrency has a 'coin' suffix so it seems to be working ok so far.

I'm telling you man, whenever I explain this to people who are extremely non tech-savvy, I inevitably have to use pop-culture references anyway, and Credits are so well-known from sci-fi movies that it's what I end up using anyway.

At any case, the conversation doesn't go "Hey, have you heard of Credits?", Bitcoin is still the name for the technology. Just that when the time comes to explain how you get "Bitcoins", you say that you get Credits into your address in the ledger, and you can send Credits to other people in the system. That way you bypass the inevitable "But what is a Bitcoin?" question, where I always have to explain that there's no such thing as "a" Bitcoin, and that it's just credits moving around in a virtual ledger.

Personally, we're all here at least somewhat tech savvy, so you could call it the Dog's Bollocks for all I care and it would still make just as much sense to me. But when explaining to people who don't know and don't care for techy stuff, I have to use pop-culture references, and "Bitcoin" just doesn't cut it. Sci-fi authors have already done the work for us in preparing people for futuristic digital currency called Credits. Might as well capitalize on it.

Especially since you know eventually we'll all use Satoshis anyway. Just rename Satoshis to Credits and done.

The major issue with it is the reference to "coin."

People want to pluralize it "how many bitcoins do you have"
not "how much bitcoin do you have?"

The understanding that 1 bitcoin = 100000000 satoshis is not easy to grasp right away, or that you can have .21023943 "bitcoins" due to this common understanding of what a coin is.

lets say it was called Grargurr

you'd easily say "How much Grargurr do you have?" or "I am worth # Grargurr."

To put it another way, Gold.
I have 10 kilograms of Gold.  I have 10 one-kilogram gold coins.
Not "I have 10 golds."

So that's the main problem with it. But with something as disruptive as bitcoin is, i have no problem with it redefining how we think about "coins"

Bitcoin is not a "Stupid" name but I'm afraid the terms "bitcoin" and "mining" are barriers to adoption and add an unnecessary layer of obfuscation to noobs when trying to explain what it is.  When I send bitcoin I'll often send a link to the receiving address to the recipient on Blockchain.info for confirmation.

I can't tell you how many times I've been asked by a noob "How do I get my coins out of the block chain" or think they have to push the "request payment" button on blockchain.info to "get their coins."

but it is not a "coin"  which implies a physical thing.  That is the first hurdle you have to explain to the uninitiated.

What you control is a "password" or "key" or "private key"

which in turn controls "value"

hmmm "keyvalue"

"preceived" value

"preceivedkeyvalue"

or

"agreed upon" value

"agreekey"

"keyagree"

The only complaints I've had about the Bitcoin name is that it's fairly English-specific and awkward with metric prefixes.

Saying "a millibitcoin" is much harder than saying "a millimeter."  same for micro, atto, kilo, etc.

The English-specific I was talking about goes well beyond just using "coin" as a root.  What I mean is it doesn't work with the phonotactics of most languages that aren't English.   Most languages have four to seven vowels; English has eleven or twelve, including diphthongs like "oi"!

A lot of Asian languages don't allow consonant clusters.  If you're a (native) English speaker on the other hand you can pronounce words like "Twelfths" (yes, that ends in four entirely separate consonants with no vowels between them, and "th" is utterly outside the consonants most non-germanic languages allow)! Nobody else in the world, except maybe Germans, can pronounce "twelfths" correctly.

Anyway, "Bitcoin" isn't nearly as bad as "Twelfths" but it sure as heck isn't going to work in, say, Japanese or Chinese; they'll have to insert a vowel between the T and the C in order to pronounce it at all, and because they don't use the "oi" vowel in their languages they're going to substitute something else for that.  It would have been nicer all around to name it something everybody can pronounce the same way.

Lol when I hear the word Twitter now I think of the movie where Vince Vaughn calls it "Twatter" (hearing him say it out loud is more funny than reading it).

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_a4ESySCKjgM/S_YXIgLof-I/AAAAAAAABrU/SM7LmN44cKo/s1600/couples-retreat-dvd-cover.jpg

All that matters is the name is here to stay.  Anyone who won't look into an alternative de-centralized crypto-currency because the name is funny - even after you gave hardcore facts - probably doesn't deserve it.  Maybe they'll at least have the sense to diversify their portfolio with precious metals.

i think this thread is just for the OP to attempt to get 15 minutes of fame by trying to do something big like renaming bitcoin.

i personally do not see problems with the word bitcoin. but if i was to 'dig' deep enough into the words used within the community, it has been brought up many times the word 'mining' does not fit 'solving a cryptographic puzzle'

maybe the OP could have made a more convincing topic to discuss if he talked about the term mining. even though there are dozens of threads that brought up this subject before so again, a non starter of a topic

heres some examples:
