Title: Which is the most serious bitcoin merchant?
Post by: Strob on February 13, 2011, 04:17:40 PM
Hi,

I took a look at some of the bitcoin list of merchant who accept bitcoins.  https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Trade

The one that I saw looked pretty phony to me. They look like webpages made with some kind of presets in 5 minutes. And could not find any physical address to contact the merchant.

Can anyone help me find a merchant who is well established with a decent website who accept bitcoins? Which do you think has the most credibility? Has anyone bought something from them and actually received something that was worth it?

search the forums. you will find web hosting, shell accounts, silver coins (directly or via auction site biddingpond),
last december someone was selling coffee, wool socks and stuff and last week someone with a cosmetics shop joined the crowd.

i was selling collectible 100 trillion zimbabwe dollar notes, different customers, no complaints.
here http://thatuselessguy.com/btc.html
but that page was written in 5 minutes in a terminal window with zero design in mind.
and except of 1 last banknote i sold out (i probably still wait for the gentleman from mexico to finish his order)
that's why the blink tag in the description.

If there are existing online merchants that you wish to see offer products or services in exchange for bitcoin, you might suggest to them that they add bitcoin as a payment method:

Many bitcoin sites are made by geeks in their spare time, so don't expect many professional web designs.
Regarding physical address, what for? E-mail + public key isn't enough?

You know, businesses are not often judged solely by websites.

What bout Mt Gox? BTCex?

Are you some sort of site critic? What are your credentials?

If the guy from Mexico doesn't want it I will buy. PM me or you can find me on IRC as prax.

For the OP, I am going to be selling electronic cigarette related stuff. I am not great at web design so it is pretty slow. I think we are slowly getting more and more merchants around though. Check out a thread by citizen too. He sells loads of stuff. I didn't even spend the time to look through it all yet.

SquareWear.biz (http://SquareWear.biz) is a pretty serious venture.  We worked hard on the website and are going to be improving it all the time.

Well from variety of product I would say BitMunchies.com.  I would say another business that sells higher priced items but they do not seem on their site to take bitcoin but just sell a bitcoin related product.

Let's look at some "serious" bitcoin businesses of one year ago:

WebsiteStatus
http://thatuselessguy.com/btc.htmlDOWN
https://www.link2voip.com/REFUND (CLOSED)
http://www.talksugar.com/register.phpNO LONGER ACCEPTS BITCOIN
https://nanaimogold.com/OK
https://mtgox.com/OK
https://btcex.com/OK
http://simplymaya.com/OK
http://squarewear.biz/SUSPENDED
http://bitcoincashout.com/DOWN
http://bitmunchies.com/SUSPENDED
http://biddingpond.com/CLOSED
http://memorydealers.com/OK

I don't think this is good enough. Hopefully, with the higher price of bitcoin, it gets taken more seriously from now on.

Add http://cryptoanarchy.com/ to the list  :)

Well I may not have a year of 'serious' business but close.  When you are talking about merchants who sell items from an automated BTC website I would consider myself one of them.

A few of the sites you have listed as open (which I liked very much) are apparently not doing business.  Bitmunchies.com has a message to that effect, and squarewear.biz has one product that is $0.

Simplymaya.com has no bitcoin mention just paypal.   That leaves on this list for shipping merchants as far as I know with one besides me:

http://Memorydealers.com/

This isn't intended to be a list, rather a demonstration of how "unserious" bitcoin was an year ago. The wiki Trade page will be suitable for a list of serious businesses.

Simplymaya.com does do business in Bitcoin too: http://simplymaya.com/forum/showthread.php?t=35690.

Ok.  Maybe they do but I would not put it in the serious category.  One single message posted in their forum:

"We've added a Bitcoin payment method for individual tutorials. This is for our customers that do not have access to a Credit Card or Can't use PayPal.

This is an experiment for us to hopefully help out some of our customers. It may not be a permanent addition to the site.

Thanks
Dave "

No replies or follow up, no mention of bitcoin in the store just paypal.

I don't think this is good enough. Hopefully, with the higher price of bitcoin, it gets taken more seriously from now on.

Unfortunately, it's not the low or high price that matters. Surely, a higher price will always help, but for a market to take a currency seriously requires consistency - a price that has stabilized and does not go from 4.50 to 5.50 over a month and teeter-totter all over the place over short periods of time. It adds too many problems when trying to sell goods for constant prices.

Not saying there wouldn't be ways around this, but that's what being an entrepreneur would be all about. Currently, not many think it can be done, or it's not a worthwhile venture. I guarantee you though, it's not because it's not worth enough - it's because it has not truly stabilized yet (yes, I believe it will settle down one day). When it does, I'm sure we'll see some activity from some of the more cautious entrepreneurs :)

stable prices definitely help businesses.  a payment that drops 20% in an hour because some people got zhoutonged does not help the average business at all.
