Title: Recomended ASICMiner Blade + backplane case/installation?
Post by: ssateneth on November 23, 2013, 04:15:42 PM
So I picked up a bunch of ASICMiner blades cheap, asked the seller for backplanes, seems sure that that backplanes will be shipped with them, so I ordered some 80plus platinum rated 1200 watt "Common Slot" power supplies, model HSTNS-PL11, part number 438203-001, since they seemed to be compatible, and I like insane electrical efficiency.

Now my question is, what can I mount this in? I know they will need active cooling, so I figured I need some sort of frame that will attach a number of fans to the same frame of reference as the blades. Not sure how many fans I'll need, likely 3x2 120mm in a push pull configuration, but thats aside from the original question. What can I mount all this junk in?

depends on your budget. i would idealy mount them in a rack mount tower with an open front to attach fans to that way you should be able to fit 2 sets of backplans per 4U with effective cooling and a nice looking home for them.

if your cheap then go to a flatpack store and buy some shelves leave the back off and have an open frame to shove them on and point fans to

Same issues here. Supposedly there where cases made for this setup but no one knows the part number. :-\

I would get a wire rack/shelves.  You could probably get a set from Target or Lowes for about $40.   This way you can zip tie the blades on the wires at an interval that allows proper cooling for your environment.  (Assuming they are not in a data center with proper HVAC).

Here is the thread for an open-air case for ASICMiner:  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=289491.0

Curious. Where'd you get the cheap blades?

They are no longer cheap. I happened to pick them up just before a price increase, because of overwhelming demand. The seller honored the lower price though.
