Title: Do you need both the seed and the passphrase to send coins from the wallet?
Post by: tinus42 on November 23, 2013, 10:29:06 PM
Sorry if this has been asked before, I couldn't find an answer searching for it.

If you only have the 12 word Electrum seed but not the passphrase can you recover that somehow from the seed or do you have to also remember the passphrase to be able to send coins?

Hi sorry for short post i am using tab right now. And link copy paste not working >.<
Anyways, i read about it on reddit.

Seed is a number (encoded in words) from which electrum is able to re-create wallet aka private keys.
Password protects your wallet, if someone got your wallet.dat or access to your pc.

In other words seed is same as private key, thru which you can generate public key, but you don't need password of your wallet.dat file to spend coins,

So once you restore your wallet, you will be able to set a new password.

If the password is set the client will ask for the password to be able to make a payment. If you don't remember your password, rename the default_wallet file and restore from your seed to create a new wallet with a new password.

Thanks that clears it up nicely. So only the seed is needed. :)
