Title: I bought a miner from a friend..
Post by: TheArabPanzer on November 24, 2013, 07:24:43 PM
Hey guys,

Well I bought the Jalapeno miner(5 GH/s) from a friend for 250$. I listed it on eBay to see what I could get for it. I set the starting auction at 200 and the buy now option for 500$. Literally within 5 minutes I got a notification that somebody bought it for 500$! Should I have put it to a higher buy it now option or have i just been struck lucky? Thanks.

Watch out for scammers/idiots on ebay... check the buyer's feedback.. a good buyer usually commits and pays instantly.

A quick flip for double your money sounds good to me. Don't know what Ebay's policies are with this though...I'd be careful using reversible payment methods.

He paid instantly. Blue star 100% 91 ratings. Should I have gone higher?

yeah, i've heard stories of buyers claiming they received a box of bricks rather than hardware. and obviously scammers aren't very price sensitive, so if they are willing to pay well over the market price, that's a warning sign.

check what other 5 GH/s Jalapeno miner sell for. looking at some of the auctions the prices, you don't seem to have under priced it too much.

if you just search for 'bitcoin' on ebay, you can see that almost everything related goes for way higher than the actual price. (e.g. miners or 0.01 BTC)

People seem to pay double what it's worth on eBay Bitcoin machines.
Having something for immediate shipment kinda adds value I guess.

bingo. in economics it's called 'time preference' -- people prefer to get things sooner rather than later.

I think you could have gotten a bit more
Currently, because of the increase in price for btc, the price of bitcoin miners increased... a lot
However, you still got a lot of money

You could have probably gone higher but $500 seems fair on eBay.

Prices on eBay for mining equipment is pretty volatile right now.  I'm considering dumping my 30+ USB miners because they are going for so high.  What do you think would be a ridiculous price for 30 USB Miners, Hubs and Fans?

When I got my Jalapeno I wasn't satisfied with the amount of coins I was mining. After a few calculations and at the rate difficulty was climbing I realized I would never make back my investment back. So I sold it for $200 to a friend. If you made $500, in my opinion that's good business. I'ts not likely that you'll ever get that much through mining, once you take into account electricity costs.

Ebay cancels alot of auctions that are for bitcoin stuff.  It is against their agreement I think.

500 is not severely underpriced you might have been able to get maybe 50 more but overall what you made in profit is a lot and more than that machine will ever make.
