Post by: voipferg on November 27, 2013, 05:14:03 PM
Hello All,
Newbie Here!.....Peace and Love.
Can you point me to a step-by-step document or thread on setting up a miner or miners on a Windows 2008 R2 server?

Thanks

what are you going to mine? anyway I think any general Windows guide will be pretty much the same for you.

Thanks for the reply.
I am hoping to mine Bitcoin, Litecoin or anything else suggested.

Any ideas on the setup of the Dell R610?

Thanks. Peace.

You can make a bootable USB with Windows Server 2008 R2 installation media and boot the R610 from the USB and install the OS onto a local HDD. If the R610 has DRAC Enterprise you can remote in over the network and mount an iso image of Windows Server 2008 R2 as well and install the OS onto a local HDD that way. You won't be able to mine Bitcoin with a R610 unless you're going to be connecting ASICs to it in some manner as CPU mining bitcoin is not profitable. Litecoin is generally mined with GPUs as well and the R610 does not accept GPUs.

Kephael,
Thanks for the reply.
Please explain more about  "connecting ASICs to it in some manner as CPU mining bitcoin is not profitable."

Also, I believe I can add a GPU as there is an available slot on the motherBoard.

Please advise.

Peace.

I'd say just watch some youtube videos, search for "litecoin mining" as far as I know there isn't really much that can be mined with only the CPU anymore, maybe something like feather coin. ASICs are miners you can plug into any computer, but it's a long story, just browse around the forums and look for videos.

You'll need a PCI-E Riser to mount a GPU, however since the R610 is a 1u server most GPUs will not fit. You'll want to mine CPU coins like Quark Coin, Primecoin, or maybe some others.

of course if you really just want to make money, probably the best thing to do would be to just buy bitcoin.
