Title: bitcoin.org needs more help with translations!
Post by: blockgenesis on November 28, 2013, 12:28:01 AM
Many existing translations need to be updated and new languages are welcome.

Why this is important

The future of Bitcoin is closely related to decentralization. Not just the network, but the jurisdiction of all of its users, miners and businesses. Widespread adoption increases resilience and provides incentives for countries and businesses to compete in a free market. Making sure everyone can benefit from Bitcoin is also important to create a fair and sustainable economy. Yet, most countries don't have as much information available in their own languages. Bitcoin.org can help to make a difference on this level. Bitcoin.org is one of the most visited website in the world, this is a great chance and opportunity for the Bitcoin community.

How to help

If you speak a language other than English, or if you know anyone who does, you can go to Transifex : https://www.transifex.com/projects/p/bitcoinorg/ and click to join the team for your language. You can then translate texts and review / improve existing translations. New coordinators (with a good level of experience for their respective language) would be helpful for some of these teams.

When a translation is nearly complete, I usually create an editable live preview to help translators to complete their work. A few good quality translation is always worth more than many poor quality translations. All texts need to be translated and reviewed by at least two different persons (peer-reviewed), unless perhaps if you're a professional translator. It's also always welcome to ask for questions if you are unsure about anything, this can help preventing accidental changes.

BTW, there is also many other projects listed on this page which can be translated:
http://bitcoin.org/en/support-bitcoin

Donations / Bounties

Feel free to offer a bounty if you want to incentivize people to work on translations. You're also very welcome if you want to pay a professional translator directly (here's some accepting bitcoins (http://usebitcoins.info/index.php/services/written-content/translations)) . With the recent rise in the price, there is probably some bit-millionaire who would like to help Bitcoin reaching new horizons?

Live previews / Diff

Live previews are updated hourly on http://bitcointx.us.to/, please contact me to add your language.

Differences with version published on bitcoin.org can be viewed by appending /diff to the url (e.g. http://bitcointx.us.to/es/diff)

Simple changes can be previewed without waiting for the live previews to update: https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin.org#previewing

Edit: If anyone here can forward this message in the local subsections of bitcointalk, that would be a very useful thing to do.

There should be a version in Hindi as well.

Indians want to love Bitcoin... if only they knew what it was...

Someone created the Hindi team but finally didn't start working on translations. I would be happy to see anybody take that task too. Could you (or anyone else) ask for it in the India subforum?
https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?board=89.0

There's been a lot of new members in the last days, especially in the Spanish team, that's encouraging. Not all of them started working on translations but that's a good start!

Sure, there's already a lot of work done in this team, it would be great to have it completed so it can be published! You can go on Transifex (as stated in the first post) and click to join the team. I will accept your request in the next hours (or the coordinator of the team will take care of it before me).

The french translation is dreadful. (First page) Subtitle alone would make anyone flee for their lives.
Code:
Bitcoin est le moyen le plus simple d'échanger de l'argent à peu de frais
*shivers*
I'll try to submit something better (for free), just give me some time.

I am french and I can tell you this is much better than before, but perhaps worse than what you want to submit :) .

So sure, improvements are always appreciated. If this string is already approved, you can send me a message or open an issue on Transifex so I can review your changes and apply them.

I'll try to keep this thread up to date with the status of translations on bitcoin.org.

So far there's been a very interesting number of new members in many different teams. Many languages are getting closer to being fully translated, but more help is still very useful and appreciated.

Can the translations on Transifex extend to switching out the press contacts for other people? (I am guessing not).

It would be great if as part of the translation process we could find local language speaking press contacts to replace the current set.

Didn't see this topic until now. If you'll have me, I'd like to be part of the Dutch translation team. In the past I've translated for Litecoin.org; the Nxt wiki and have translated Satoshi's original whitepaper for Bitcoin, as well as Sunny King's Peercoin whitepaper.

If the Bitcoin whitepaper translation is useful, feel free to include it on the wiki.

@Stark-Fujikawa

Thanks for the Whitepaper translation (I wasn't aware of it, bookmarked!). Someone also made a HTML version of the English page which I still have here. Perhaps at some point it would be great to put this on bitcoin.org (althought I'd like to give a chance for translators to catch up with the FAQ first).

I am not sure if I get your idea correctly, but the press page could be made available for other languages as well.

The main challenge was to actually have non-controversial interviewees, which has been difficult for the English page as well. I wasn't sure we could do a good job on this front with other languages.

The FAQ is already translated. Except quotes, translating this page is fairly easy (only a few titles), and custom content (or no content at all) can be displayed for any particular language (e.g. interviewees, press coverage, etc.).

I know this is kind of a old thread but what about Hindi? Dont you think that is a huge market waiting to be tapped?

Sure, actually of all languages I think are a priority, Hindi is probably the one with the lowest level of activity. With what is happening right now in India, having good quality translated content available like the FAQ seems only like a good thing to me. So if anyone can make this happen, your work is certainly welcome as well.

In fact so long as translations' quality is good, I see no downside to adding new languages. Unmaintained languages can be a long-term problem, but it is still possible to serve partially outdated content for a limited period of time. To me that is still better than nothing as most content on bitcoin.org is timeless.

Yet there is still some work to do before it can be published. Spanish is an important language so it would be nice to have it updated.

What about other languages?

You can see their status here:

As you can see, there is a lot of language teams. All of them are progressing at a different speed, and sometime fall in a period of inactivity. Making sure these translation are published is just a matter of spending enough time on them.

Title: Re: bitcoin.org needs more help with translations!
Post by: blockgenesis on January 26, 2014, 04:35:56 PM
it seems the FAQ is taking longer to translate for a lot of translators. So I just added instructions to allow translations to be published faster without the FAQ:

"It is possible to ignore the FAQ in order to publish translations faster. Just search for the "nofaq" tag in the Transifex search bar to translate/review everything except the FAQ. The FAQ is a very useful piece of texts but it is a very long page, it can be completed and published at a later time."

--

Is there a good Spanish speaker who would like to review translations? Spanish translations is a special case, translated by a large number of people, it would be nice to make sure these texts are consistent and properly reviewed before publishing them.

I've completed 100% of the nofaq translations for Swedish on transifex, although it needs review. There are ~70 strings on the FAQ page that needs to be translated hopefully I will find to add those translations shortly.
Could you perhaps add Swedish to the live preview list?

Is there any bounty

Additional help is always welcome. You can join the team and see what is still unreviewed, make improvement when required and ask any question you have.

Yes, in some cases small translation bounties are available. But there is probably not enough work left to do in Russian translations for a bounty. Bounties are also usually offered to contributors who choose to involve and do a lot of good work for free, to encourage and thank them.

Ok thanks.  I am not fluent in Russian but have some family that are.  But I would have a hard time motivating them to work for free. But thanks for the reply.

The website also needs an easier to locate Download link.

Seems like you're trying to hide the Bitcoin Core...

Since you join the website:

Introduction
Getting Started -Click-
2. Choose your wallet -Click-
And finally Bitcoin Core

Bitcoin.org is about Bitcoin, not Bitcoin Core. And Bitcoin Core isn't appropriate as the default choice for most new users, so this is actually intended; Bitcoin Core is displayed equally with other wallets.

But ultimately, I think Bitcoin Core should have a dedicated website too like other wallets. But current website is probably "good enough" to not make this a priority.

Bitcoin.org is the original domain name used with the first Bitcoin website. It was registered and is still managed by Bitcoin core developers and by additional community members, with the input of Bitcoin communities. Bitcoin.org is not an official website. Just like nobody owns the email technology, nobody owns the Bitcoin network. As such, nobody can speak with authority in the name of Bitcoin.

I'd say you're welcome if you want to help with German, as I don't know if current translators will be available soon. And otherwise, they'll be able to review your work and it will make their life easier as long as you take time to provide good quality translations.

I am currently translating in French, but reviews are always welcome and appreciated.

The new "Choose your wallet" page has been published recently and, as always, translations are welcome.

Also good news, bitcoin.org is now translated in 24 languages!

The following translations are outdated and help from new translators is very welcome:

Polish
Chinese (traditional)
Persian
Turkish

I just created most of the Dutch translations for the new "Choose your wallet" page in Transifex, but not entirely sure how to continue. Do I request a live preview now to get everything right?

The docs on GitHub suggest that I create a PR, but do I need to fetch the translations from Transifex in my bitcoin.org fork?

Thanks! I have just updated the live preview:

However translations aren't fully complete (3% left). They also usually need to be reviewed both by another Dutch speaker and by me, using Google translate to compare translated strings with the original ones to spot disprepancies.

Are you confident that your work is accurate - consistent with translations, typo-free and easy to understand and read for Dutch speakers?

Once translations are complete and reviewed, they can indeed be submitted in a pull request, but I usually take care of this part since I must review and test translations.

Thanks again for your help.

Thanks for the feedback! I indeed need to translate some more strings and I saw in the live update that some things need some fixing and could use better wording. I'll let you know once I'm finished!

Bitcoin.org was set up by Satoshi as the site for the Bitcoin Core project.  Now a small group of people associated with the Foundation control it use it for promoting certain things.  They want the SEO for their purposes so now they say Bitcoin Core should be somewhere else.

Don't feed the trolls

The bitcoin.org sock puppet speaks.  When you can't answer an issue just yell "troll" (what, no meme?).

I guess I "trolled" FinCEN when I got the Bitcoin mining decision:

I guess I am trolling the community when I had the video made at my expense:

In my opinion Bitcointalk is a craddle of all the cryptocurrencies world people. We as a parralell are being borned here, and then we can go to other world areas and work there. This is like a bible for new-beginners.

That is really great that there are translations because not all people are well educate in English language,
through this they can easily communicate in different nationality here in the whole world.

It is always good and understandable to speak in our native language. So translations would be a good help to make bitcoin even more popular and understandable to people who are not so good or those who are not so familiar in the english language. In this will succeed the language bareer may be broken and this will open new doors to cryptocurrency progress most especially to bitcoin.

I am a professional translator. I translate English to Greek. I was wondering if there are any fixed payments in Bitcoins for our services?

It's a voluntary initiative, but they started paying out contribution bonuses from time to time over the past year.

They actually offer translation bounty recently.
For example, I'll receive Bitcoin as a translation bounty for August to December.
It may be wise to translate bitcoin.org compared with translating other shit projects.

Right, I agree with you, not all people's are intelligent and smart in English language, it is good we have translations cause everyone understands and communicates in different nationalities around the world, especially in crypto world.
