Title: Name something you've actually BOUGHT with bitcoin
Post by: ohiofarmer on November 28, 2013, 12:30:21 AM
I feel like the vast majority of people are investors right now. Is anyone actually using bitcoin to buy things? If so, what? I've purchased other cryptocurrencies with it, but that's it so far...

You cant horde 100%, it not good for the crypto-economy. Spend 1-5% of your stash per month.

Also, you should give away .1 and .01 to friends and family as a gift. Best way to educate the masses is to donate some to them.

I like these two stores, for BTC and LTC respectively:

https://www.ltcasics.com/

I will also be buying a number of my Christmas gifts in btc  ;D

But yes, most of my btc is saved. Just like my fiat from my job. It happens to reside in my bank acct.

I've spent thousands in the last year (value at the time of spending) on things I'd buy anyway. Beer, a lot of gift cards, given BTC to friends as presents and also betting and altcoins in decreasing order of usefulness...

Edit: Planning to visit Kreuzberg, Berlin next spring to spend more BTC in the real world, flight to be paid in Bitcoin and I persuaded a friend who owns a B&B there to accept it.

I feel very conscious about doing my little bit to keep the economy active and "Buying Bitish" (sorry).

I bought $100 worth of pre-1982 copper pennies from a random bitcointalk forum user, the name of whom I forget. I thought society might collapse and 10,000 copper pennies might be the start of a small eco-village economy; loldoomporn. This was $12/BTC times.

I bought a $60 double chambered bubbler glass piece from dankglass on these forums. Nice piece for $60. This was also $12/BTC times.

I bought a 1oz Gold Coin(2011 Canadian Maple Leaf). Got an amazing deal on this at the time; BTC was yet again $12/BTC and I paid 25BTC for the gold coin. Gold was $1700 spot back then. My friend didn't understand mining and didn't want to mine, but wanted BTC. He is very glad he made that deal now.

I bought a $60ish gift-pak of Bees Brothers honey-caramels as a birthday present for my mom. This was also around $12/BTC times.

I bought an Acer laptop Core i3 2.2ghz/4GB/500GB from bitcoinstore.com a couple weeks ago as a Christmas present for my mom to replace a decade old single core celeron lappy. This was $500/BTC times.

I got conned by some dick named Tom (the btcfpga.com guy) around this time last year who was supposed to send me 180GH/s worth of ASICs that never ended up existing. This cost me 225ish BTC ($2900 ASIC order, paid with BTC, when BTC was $12/BTC).

I cashed out at an exchange for the first time yesterday, after over 3 years of mining. I withdrew ~$30,000 USD so I can move out of my parents basement this coming spring and put a down payment on a condo somewhere in Colorado where I can't get arrested for smoking weed(currently on probation for distribution).

I have exactly 150 BTC left in cold storage, backed up in 4 different locations. I stopped mining a few months ago. The equipment that I wanted and paid for never existed (see 2 paragraphs ago). The coins I have left will not get touched for a long, long time.

Lesson?  Love your mom, and don't trust assholes named Tom.

Buy something with bitcoins? What a concept! I've donated a many of them. I did buy all the back issues of Bitcoin Magazine while in Atlanta. Well, Rassah did, but paid him back due to them being stored on the laptop hidden underneath said vendor table under Elizabeth's watchful eye, that is.

Windows 7 for 1btc, back when it was $32.

Payment for a hacker to text blast the cellphone of some jerk on craigslist who scammed me out of $200. His phone was literally unusable, getting 6 texts/second. At the time, I think btc was worth like $15, so I paid out 5 btc for the deed. Felt good at the time; still kinda feels good know, though I do kind of wish I had those bitcoins back now haha. Also, I paid out .5 btc bounties for people who would prank call his ass at all hours of the day and night before I hired the hacker.

I bought three Butterfly labs 65mn chips. At a price where they will make three times the bitcoin of the purchase price.

Oddly enough it was not a problem even as BC was jumping all over the place. Because they are a relative asset.

Can't see doing absolute assets.

BUT....

I do watch repair as a side job, pocket watches. How would I advertise this service here to do it in bitcoin? I think it's time I try to see how this new economy works...

Movie tickets.

It was the first purchase that I did and it was a huge experience as I realized how much superior Bitcoin really is.

When compared to logging to the banks website and filling all the necessary fields, it was liberating to just copy&paste the address and fill the amount.

Not to mention that if the person receiving the coins would have had different bank or if it would have been weekend, it could have taken several days for the transaction to be visible for the him.

There's a definite need for cryptocurrencies, as the current banking system is far from what you could expect with todays technology.

Amazon Gift Cards (So much money spent on them.)
Papa John's Gift Cards
Bioshock Infinite (Premium)
GTA 5
COD: Ghosts (A regret.)
Dead Rising 2 - Zombrex Edition
Mystery Box (A mystery package.)
CoD Season Pass
A Watch
Christmas Boots (Christmas Presents)
A Mushroom Keychain (From Mario)

Soon to Buy:

Mining Rig for Alt-Coins
----

Honestly, it takes me a few minutes to buy things. I either go like, "ERMAGAWD I'm going to lose BTC if I don't copy and paste the address twenty times." And then I have to read over the first number, and then the last letter. Over and over again.

So paranoid. Especially since I normally do large withdrawals + deposits. It's so easy to lose $200, and cry painfully. Of course, to loose $90.

I will never get Bitcoins.

$50 worth of Target gift cards

Looking into buying silver, but not as much of a silver bug as I once was. Kind of crazy that no long ago I was thinking of trading in a 1/10 oz gold piece for 1 BTC....now it's 1 oz gold = 1 BTC.

In the end, I've actually bought things with bitcoin, nothing with PMs.

I feel like the vast majority of people are investors right now. Is anyone actually using bitcoin to buy things? If so, what? I've purchased other cryptocurrencies with it, but that's it so far...

Everything.

Ok, I just ordered one for "pick up". Will see what happens.

The fact that it identified my payment is... creepy...

The fact that it hasn't sent me an email yet is also... creepy....

Edit: Called the local Papa John's. Pizza was waiting there with my phone number and someone else's name. Went over, picked up pizza, explained bitcoins, drove home, ate pizza.

Welcome to the new world. Just ate half a day's worth of mining. Hm.

Let other people spend, it looks like 2014 will see $300-$400 million in actual sales transaction via bitcoin now that the whole porn industry, Zynga, etc., are on it. I'll sit tight and watch bitcoin hit $40,000 on the back of other people's spending and liquidity proofing thank you very much.

I saw in a little forum, the idea that the Bitcoin client should be changed so that people could attach specific property to specific bitcoins. I think that the idea was to make the bitcoins redeemable in only that property or kind of property. Something like this might start to drag Bitcoin into being used as real, spendable money.

Just bought another (25gh) miner. With a combination of bitcoins and my fees for fixing things (also collected in bitcoins)

I've been thinking: I repair watches (1860-1930 pocket watches especially) and a cleaning is normally $150 (where I take it apart and everything). Jewelers charge $500+ and send the thing out to a chop shop. So I will do this for bitcoin; where is a good place to advertise this (say .15btc for a cleaning and service)?

I have a close friend who repairs vintage radios and he makes a mint there are so many collectors out there.

Although hoarding bitcoins and not spending them might make you more money, if people don't start using them to buy things the value is not going anywhere and bitcoin will just become an inflated stock taken over by an alt-coin that embraces spending.

it could be very useful as an off shore tax haven that can be stored in your brain even if the market decided not to use it as a currency.

That's one theory.  Precious metals and a lot of other valuable and 'successful' things kind of argue against that though.

Another theory is that if everyone is using the global persistent block chain for everything all of the time, the nature of the Bitcoin network will change in ways that would make the solution lose a lot of the features that many of us value.  Like, say, being being widely distributed on an infrastructure level (and thus, quite robust and hard to manipulate.)

To me the best of both worlds is to have Bitcoin (or something like it) have it's current highly distributed strengths while a plethora of alternates service the global consumer load and rest their value on how much BTC they are associated with (among other things.)

Bitcoin has some design issues and hitorical baggage which will make it hard to compete with purpose oriented alternates in various spheres (such as privacy, latency, etc) anyway and if it tries it will probably fail and eventually become a two-time loser.

In the mean time it is of value to try to push to the limits of the block size and start evaluating the impacts of transaction fees so it is great to see you trying to sell trinkets for BTC and I wish you the best of luck with it.

1. A DVD drive
2. Payments to those who've worked damn hard to figure out mining issues
3. Paid for online roulette on 22, black, even, 2nd 1/3rd ... and it HIT.

I honestly understand the "this-is-an-investment-I'll-never-spend-these-coins" people out there -- but unless you're willing to help adoption and foster the currency as a, ya know, ACTUAL currency, you're missing out. Do I hope to get lots of $$$ out of BTC? Sure. But I'm much, much more interested in BTC as a new world changing currency and network than I am if I can "get rich quick".

I made 2 very nice aluminum rigs for my friends out here and requested they pay me in LTC or BTC. But they wouldn't. They simply would not do it. Their thinking was that if they paid me (and this was just today) 4 LTC, so about $80, for their open rigs and in 6 months LTC hits $50, they just paid $200 for an open rig ... NO, NO, NO, NO. You paid $80 for it. That's how currency works. It's value is set to whatever the hell it is RIGHT NOW. Speculation and hoping for that big swing in the spot price is just that: wishing. If you are going to change your BTC for actual, real, physical goods, then it's worth is only as good as the price you're willing to pay RIGHT. NOW.

My issue is that if they're unwilling to actually use the currency as such, then where is their faith that it has real value? We know its a REAL currency now, that debate is over; I just don't think it's helping the widespread use and inherent value of crypto currencies if you're unwilling to spend them.

Also I'm the service manager at a motorcycle shop so I generally can get things for cheaper prices through our wholesale catalogs than I can with bitcoin. Though I've also talked with the owner about bitcoin and we will be accepting it in the future when we launch our ecommerce site.

- A ton of of chai tea and lunch (wraps/curries) from a favourite local cafe of mine (even before they took XBT I used to frequent their original location back in the day)
- Tips (on top of cash tips) to a few people. Also to helpful sites.
- Paying back small debts to friends, co-workers
- A trivial amount of dice games, bitcoin-based shares just for the fun of it

I was recently intending to pay for move out cleaning services in XBT, but they took my initial deposit by CC and then charged the rest to my card shortly after the service was provided before we worked out the details. (I didn't initiate the offer to pay in bitcoin, they advertise it right on their site. I think the original request to pay in bitcoin was simply forgotten between scheduling the booking and the work done several weeks apart.)

On a side note, I just moved continents, and am hoping to buy some food via the takeaway.com network sometime soon too!

(If more retailers/non-US retailers were accepting bitcoin, I'd continue to use it and just replenish my stocks as I spend.)

Helps working at a motorcycle shop that's for sure!Good discounts and no shipping costs. hard to beat.

Thanks for the compliment on my store. It is really however still quite empty. It’s an unbelievably slow process listing everything, but it's starting to bulk up. Let me know if there is anything in particular you are looking for in one of those listed categories.

If you did buy something you would be the stores first customer ;D

We can combine ship according to weight and you can get a real quick shipping quote from the shopping cart without having to register or anything.

BTW is that an airhead Beemer in your avatar?

That Pizza Purchase Worth $7 Million Today

See, that's the error people make in thinking: If that person had not spent the money for the two pizzas, then that news story of "hey, someone actually converted this digital stuff for FOOD" would never have been aired. And people would never have heard of Bitcoin, or thought that it the idea would have any merit.

And the value of Bitcoin today would equal the value of flooze or something. You can never change something in the past without changing the present. People just do not seem to get that.

Yes it is, 1971 R75/5, that's me sitting on it. It was my first vehicle, and I still have it today, though it's torn apart into many pieces right now for an engine rebuild that's been put on the back burner for about the last year.

I'll keep checking your tool shop as you add inventory, and I might be your first customer (when the exchange rate goes up a bit!! Hard to justify spending coins right now, knowing they're unlikely to be worth this little anytime in the future ever again).

62Khs of scrypt mining rig shares at scrypt.cc?ref=baagt (http://scrypt.cc?ref=baagt) which I've traded up to 115khs.  (no contract)

Between trading and an estimate (low ball) of 4 satoshis/khs every 10 minutes... I'm loving it!  The site is averaging about .5% profit per khs per day in mining rewards alone.  WOOT! is right! :)

My miner died so... that was all I purchased. LOL

It's paid off in a great time in chat with happy people, happy-helpful admin and .5% profit a day.  Wow!

I guess you could say it's also bought me a job as I was offered a position with the company, should find out the details today.  (I'm stoked!)

Keep it Clean! :D

A 0.25 oz Gold Eagle.  I think that as time goes by, I will save most BTC that get (I buy them for cash), and what I spend will likely be for more gold.
Hm. Who is selling gold? That could be nice.

That's kind of meta.  Hope you didn't pay much in exchange fees.  ;)

The other day I bought a bag, and the lady behind the counter put it in... a bag...

Still he could of used 5,000 instead of 10,000 for them, average full sized pizza with 2 toppings(at least where I live) costs about $20 or so. But yea, if his buying pizza for that much Bitcoin didn't happen and attract all that attention, Bitcoin might be where it is today.

They weren't worth anything at the time (early 2010.)

That's the very first recorded Bitcoin purchase, and it basically set the initial price for a bitcoin at $0.002 each. Quite a steal in hindsight.

I commissioned a digital painting from a guy around the end of 2012, I believe, for BTC3. At the time, Bitcoin was around $30, I believe.

At today's rate, I paid $1,751.31 for that painting. And I don't regret it at all. It's fantastic to see how far BitCoin has come in just over a year.

I still have that painting on my computer. At some point I'd like to get it made into a framed poster for my office wall. It'd be a good story, I think, to bring up the success of BitCoin from when I was first introduced to it.
