Title: Process on tracking down a scammer on this forum
Post by: Jeffrey on November 28, 2013, 12:01:45 PM
Hi guys,

I'm in the process of finding and suing Shylok, real name Aihab Abogalil, from Greece and/or Israel.
Maybe he's active on more names, so here is the story, if you recognize parts of it, be careful.

- He offered to sell me 300 BlockErupter and USB hubs
- At that time i hadn't heard of Escrow yet so I agreed to buy from him
- First he wanted Western Union and pushed me transfering money on a sunday, which I didn't do
- His promise was he had guys at his warehouse who could ship for him, even on sunday evening
- It started to feel dodgy so we agreed on me paying half in BTC, him shipping a part, me paying the rest, him shipping the rest. This was my mistake for being too greedy to get the Erupters, I should've stopped it here
- He sent me a copy of his ID (see below) and a mail from an official DELL employee account (or at least thats what it looks like)
- 4 BTC were paid, he stayed in touch a little coming up with weird excuses for not shipping
- Excuses were he was out of fiat money to pay for shipping, no time, etc
- After a few days he stopped replying
- I made him a deadline to ship something or send the BTC back but no reply
- A little later I got a mail from his hotmail account, where a "friend" of his told he was out of the country because a family relative died
- I said I would give him a week to sort things
- After not hearing anything again I made him another deadline, which just passed

I've edited this and other posts in this thread to remove some personal information from both him and me.

Buyers: please be aware and don't be as stupid as I was
Scammers: be warned, not everybody will just accept being scammed...

On his facebook are messages of him buying a new computer, a new phone, a new Versace suit. Guess how he got that money huh... And he has blocked me now, so seems it's really this guy.

Is it allowed to post his real details here in the public?
Anyways PM'd.

I'm already taking legal steps with the police and Dutch ambassy in Greece and his employer. I'm not posting more details here in public as I'm sure he'll read this at some point.

How is it not accurate? I posted the address with it (edited in the post). If you contact the authorities, give his name and location they will find him for sure.
I didn't set the marker in Bing Maps. Facebook linked it there. If he used WiFi to post it, it'll certainly be his address.

It points to the middle of a street. He could be up to (i'm just putting random numbers here) 500m, 1000m or more away. Unless the police does something, this area isn't that much helpful. One would have to cover many houses and buildings and thousands of people.

You do know the police can search in their system at what address someone is registered right? If you give them an approximate location, they can verify if you're talking about the same person.

Just got contacted by 2 other people he scammed.

All information will go to the Greek police and we'll take it from there. I'll include the address location and point where we got it from so the police knows it's not the exact address but it's the area.

Keep the information coming guys!

I'm definitely following this thread.  This is going to be so much fun.  Yea, best of luck catching him.  He's lucky he ran into you, a nice guy who calls the police.  If he ended up scamming somebody with a different "idea" of justice... oh boy.  Because he DEFINITELY is not very careful about his personal information.

Just a thought:  What if every time he scams, he uses this name and passport picture (one he might have found somewhere online), and this is all leading to some random dude who has no idea what's going on?  I know it's unlikely since he's bragging of getting a recent new computer... but still.

Again... I'm really hoping that he is not using some poor soul's name and passport photo.  Again, doubt it because he is cheering himself on his new alienware and stuff, but still, a smart thief, when asked for his passport picture, will usually find many such pictures on a quick google search...

There are too many things that are linked to eachother. On his ICQ page is also a picture of him, his Skype dat of birth matches and plenty of other details that are easily overlooked. This guy has scammed people on a WoW forum 2 years ago and probably thought he could get away with it again.

Thanks everybody for all your support in getting information and just messages saying you hope we're catching him.

I'm going to stop sharing details from here as the legal processes are starting.
All I can say here is that his boss emailed me asking me to call him, and my embassy has agreed to help me with reporting him to the greek police.

I hope he's reading this and starting to shit his pants.

Major steps in this process will be placed in future updates (as long as it's allowed by the police etc.)

For legal reasons I'll be removing all personal information from this thread. Everyting is written down (and sent to the right people who will take it from here)
I've also written down the names of people who have assisted me, I'll contact you by PM in a little while.

I'll keep this topic open to post updates. First to inform people who showed interest in this process and second to (hopefully) scare away some (potential) scammers so they'll think twice before trying to rip somebody off.

I think the nature law is however hard on him. The stealing is not in accepted socially so he will get what he desirves. One wy or another.

I have however discovered another forum scammer. I think that there should be some approval before buying selling on this forum.

I think that doesn't happen. The forum clearly states they won't remove posts from scammers or such and they leave it up to everybody else to use their brains.
The only thing we can do is use the trust option which is clearly visible once it's negative.

BIG UPDATE

Just got a call from his boss. They checked his email and verified he used his work email to scam people.
Following this he got instantly FIRED.

If you're reading this; eat that bitch, but this was only step 1.

Now into suing him to get the actual money back. Fortunately, him being fired can actually work as proof against him, since his work has verified he used his work mail to scam people.

Dear Jeffrey,

I am also scammed by this person, I have sent him an ultimatium to either pay me back.. Or I will go after him. Could you contact me so we could coördinate our efforts? Great work on the employer part! karma is a b....

I have much written documentation, and I could verify/proof his identity from a prior identified bitcoin transaction. This guy is careless in scamming, funny thing is.. Even if it is concidered as a financial asset, good or immaterial asset.. He has broken the law.

Im also a Dutch native but I believe the forum would not appreciate a Dutch conversation here.

You can contact me on rotterdamfinance@gmail.com

Thanks all for showing more interrest.
As told before, the bitch got fired at his company.
I spoke to one of his direct colleagues before and after he got fired and he verified this.  (his boss who runs the department is from another country, luckily it is the same as I'm from, which helped a lot on communication)
There was however a downside to this which I didn't see coming. His colleague told he he was living in an appartment sort of owned by the company, so because he got fired, he had to leave. Of course this is even better, losing your job AND your house. However, nobody knows where he is. His colleague said he would go to Germany or back to Israel. Last thing he knew was that in the end he decided to go back to Israel. But yeah... finding him and sueing him will be even harder because at this point I have no new address and Israel is not in the EU which also makes things harder.
So I'm afraid everybody's money is just gone and we have to satisfy with the idea that he lost his job and his house (and many people in his life know the reason)

now that its an old thread let me saber your eyes guys :
I did get fired yes , for using work resources for personal need. what Jeffrey didn't share with you is I was looking for a way to leave the work anyway and by this I actually got my compensation too :D
also , my department manager isn't from your country he is a greek so no need to lie :D
and that colleague of mine that has been feeding you info? I was aware from day 1 he is ratting to you so I just kept feeding him false information and playing all along.

so thank you once again for the nice money , its really appreciate where I am now :D
